The Random EU Thoughts Thread — Page 9

Here’s something I’ve been wondering about for a little while: Wookieepedia’s list of Star Wars audio productions includes unabridged versions of many of the Legends books in addition to the heavily abridged ones that are much easier to come by. After some googling, I learned that these editions are called Talking Books, and were recorded with blind or vision-impaired people in mind. My question is, where the hell do you get these? I’m able to listen to audiobooks day in and day out at work, and I’d love to burn through some of the older Star Wars stuff I missed back in the day, but the regular audio versions are so heavily edited as to be borderline worthless.

Worth noting here: the bar I play trivia at has a beer called the Sun Crusher, and I can never resist ordering one whenever I’m there solely due to the Star Wars connection. Luckily, it’s pretty good.

I wonder why Palpatine bothered with the Galaxy Gun and World Devastators when he was able to make Force Storms which can destroy the surface of planets “with a fleeting thought”

Force Storms

Remember when some people thought that was the kind of thing we’d see in The Force Awakens, based solely on the title?

Personally, I was hoping for a Force Dragon. It’s the Wagner nerd in me.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

Tom Veitch said that Palpatine can only create Force Storms when his mind touches a powerful light side Force-user’s mind.

Look, he just really likes fidget spinners and lives in his parents’ basement. No need to judge.

I find it moderately amusing that the EU has a “Darth Millennial”.

Wookieepedia says that he was created by Wizards of the Coast in 2005. I wonder if “Millenial” meant then what it means today.

Author
Time

According to the Wookieepedia page, the intended meaning was more like “millenarian”.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

I always found it funny how "millennial” and “millennialist” mean competely different things.

I figured that “Darth Millenial” was named such because he lived 1000 years before the movies.

Weren’t the Millenials some apocalyptic sub-sect of Christianity in the middle ages?

Thoughts on the concept of lightsaber crystals? Do you like it or would you have preferred that lightsabers just be technology that the Jedi and Sith use?

Author

I go back and forth on the topic of crystals. Right now, I’m fine with them. I don’t like how they’re presented in the new canon, but I’m fine with the concept.

So I just finished reading the book Dark Tide I: Onslaught, and I came across a reference to the character Asyr Se’lar in one of the last chapters.

Almost two decades ago you drove my Bothan lover, Asyr Sei’lar, to distraction, and that distraction got her killed.” - quote from Gavin Darklighter in Chapter 34.

I haven’t read the X-Wing novels, is this a thing in the EU?

I’ve heard that Lucas, back in the 70’s, joked(?) about Han having a Wookiee-wife, but I had no idea stuff like this actually happened in the EU. Was this made during a time when Bothans still look fairly human? Keep in mind that according to Wookieepedia she looks like this. Or like this? I get the feeling that none of the illustrators had any idea what to do with this information.

So… Gavin Darklighter’s a furry. I’ve read the first X-Wing book, and I don’t remember that, but it could come later in the series.

Yes, apparently she first appeared in the second X-Wing novel; Wedge’s Gamble

Meh, stranger things have happened in SW.

Dare I ask?

These two? Lovers.

Well, that’s what I get for asking.

I guess some EU writers were just really into inter-species relationships.

So as I understand it, the TIE Defender made it back into the canon at some point on TV. What about the Scimitar assault bomber? Are the Assault Gunboats still just left as board games / video games? Where’s all the stuff?

Somehow I think I just came across an even weirder one while reading the Lando series:

Apparently these two cat-men aliens are both clones and lovers. I’m not sure what to think about this one.

I think the new canon vehicles are going to pretty much remain the same until they introduce new ships in the new movies. Legends was kind of its own thing in many ways, the new EU seems to, for the moment anyway, to primarily serve whatever new movie or series is currently being released. So I would’t expect to see any Scimitar assault bombers or Assault Gunboats anytime soon. But I’m sure Solo, like RO, is going to introduce a few new ships.
