The Phantom of the Opera Resynched (Released)

Hi, this is my first post to the Original Trilogy forum. (Man, I signed this petition long ago but how could I not have checked out this awesome forum?)

Anyway, last winter I made fan edits of the recent “Phantom of the Opera” and “Lord of the Rings” movies that some of you might be interested in. (I’ll talk about the LOTR edit in a different thread.)

One of my biggest gripes with the POTO movie (directed by Joel Schumacher) was the quality of the singing – especially that of the title character. Really, Michael Crawford has no equal in that role! So I synchronized footage from the movie to the original London cast recording. Although I initially considered using a hybrid soundtrack, I ended up using only the cast recording, so there are no sound effects of any kind – just pure singing of the highest caliber. I had to leave out some parts of the recording that I had absolutely no footage for (the reprise of “Notes”, for example, and the rehearsal for Don Juan), occasionally get creative when I didn’t have enough footage for some scenes (or when it was simply impossible to get them to match), and even (daringly and hopefully convincingly) synchronize some words to completely different words spoken by the actors in the movie (most notably at the end of the Masquerade scene, after the Phantom makes his appearance). For the most part, however, I basically had to stretch and speed up segments of the video to match the audio.

In my edit, the chandelier falls at the right time – at the end of the first act! At the end of the Phantom’s reprise of “All I Ask of You”, the camera pans down from the rooftop of the opera house, and I sort of zoom-faded through the walls of the opera house into the theater, where Christine is taking her curtain call (using footage from earlier in the movie), and made the chandelier flicker wildly before having it fall (using footage from later in the movie, of course). After the chandelier strikes the ground, I fade to black, and have the words “six months later” flash on the screen before the Masquerade scene.

I had the most fun with the swordfight scene at the cemetery (and here’s the part that you Star Wars aficianados might be interested in). As some of you may recall, in the stage musical, the Phantom shoots fireballs at Raoul from his skull-topped staff. In the movie, they trivialized that into a much less suspenseful swordfight (in which Raoul actually WINS, heaven forbid!). Having only footage of the swordfight, I made the best of it by rotoscoping the Phantom’s sword into a flaming sword (a la lightsabers) and having fireballs fly out whenever his blade strikes Raoul’s.

Finally, my edit ends where the movie should have ended – with Meg picking up the Phantom’s mask! I zoomed into the mask and fade into a final shot of the Phantom and Christine together (from the “Music of the Night” scene), with a titlecard crediting the voices of Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford.

The only time I tinkered with the audio (besides seamlessly editing together some disjoint portions of the soundtrack) was relegating a portion of the title song (the portion that was cut from the movie) into the background with added reverb, while I used footage of Meg discovering the mirror-door in Christine’s dressing room.

I would be happy to trade a DVD of my POTO edit for other fan edits or OT preservations. Please PM me to discuss that. And I would be happy to hear your thoughts.

Here's an example of what I meant when I said I had to get "creative" at times when I didn't have enough footage to fit the music:

This is when the mob sings "Track Down this Murderer" while the Phantom carries Christine into his lair near the end of the movie.

Sounds really interesting! But there are no sound effects whatsoever? Isn't that a little weird in some scenes, like the chandalier falling or the swordfight? I'm not sure about the fireball, but maybe that is just the still image not doing it justice.

That was my concern at first, but then I decided to just let the music speak for itself.

As for the "flaming sword" and fireballs, that's the first rotoscoping work I've ever done, so it's not perfect, but I think it works, for the most part. I just exported it into a Filmstrip from Premiere, then opened that in Photoshop and added the effects frame by frame. For the fireballs I just drew circles that I then applied a Gaussian blur and "Outer Glow" and "Inner Glow" layer styles to.

I was all set to praise you to the heavens and download this right now. Fired up TPB and the file is in Divx/AVI format. Is there any chance of getting this in a high quality DVD format?

Still, have some praise anyhow, myself and (I think) OCPMovie were talking about this in the dream edits thread.

Sorry to disappoint you, Boomstick. I do have it in DVD-5 format -- as to whether it meets your quality standards I cannot say -- I encoded it at a very high VBR rate, BUT I worked with XviD source files. The reason for that is that I didn't want to bring my DVD collection with me to college, so I just ripped what I wanted onto my hard drive. Still, the DVD is definitely of superior quality to the AVI, and includes chapter menus, so I'll post a torrent for that soon if you'd like. (Or I'd be happy to send you a copy in return for something else you have.)

Quality issues aside, I'd very much like to hear your thoughts about the editing itself.

I have sent you a PM with a list of edits I have. Let me know if you're interested in a trade

I forgot to mention that I'm in the UK, I hope this isn't a problem.

I've uploaded a new torrent of the single-layer DVD to Pirate Bay. I'd been having trouble uploading a multiple-file torrent (for whatever reason) so I uploaded an NRG (Nero image) file instead, hope that's okay.

(Edit: Oops, when I first posted this, I hadn't actually uploaded the torrent, but it should be there now. I'll put up my LOTR DVD later.)

I thought of doing this exact thing (but with sound effects and normal sword fight), but never found the time. I am glad someone else got around to it. I did however make an extended edit with the "no one would listen" scene. Good work wmgan, I haven't seen it yet but I hope to soon.

Where did you incorporate that extra scene? (I saw it once but I don't really remember much of it except that it takes place in the Phantom's lair.)

If you ever get around to making your own edit, I would be very interested in seeing the choices you make in various scenes.

The download finally started Is there any chance of cover and disc art for this?

I intended to include it in the torrent, but for some reason I had trouble uploading a multiple-file torrent to Pirate Bay (it kept saying "Error2", whatever that means).

Do you know any good place I can upload PDF files?

Here's a high(er) res copy of the cover art. (Unfortunately it seems like PhotoBucket recompressed it to a smaller file than I uploaded.) I only designed covers for small (CD-sized) cases because that's how I distributed it to my friends.

CD cover... that explains a lot.

What does it explain?

Wow, now I might actually get to watch this. My sister likes the Phantom a lot, but refuses to watch the film. She absolutely loathes the Phantom's voice. She refuses to watch it, which means I can't either (as I don't feel like renting it and waiting for her to fall asleep). That, and she'd proably argue with me if I liked it. Though I did want to see it. I'm not sure about the fireball either, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt until I see it in motion.

Once I've cleared enough HDD space, I'm grabbing it. Thanks.

Yeah I noticed that too. Just check recent torrents. It should be within the first ten or so pages.

I've checked it out a bit. I really liked the editing on the chandeleir scene. Very nicely done there. My sister might give this a go, as I showed her some. The only thing I've noticed is that some sped up scenes are too noticable. The big one I've seen being Raoul leaving right before The Phantom of the Opera. Have you tried other ways of getting around stuff like that. Like possibly just breaking the song with silence as he leaves and cutting it back in. I think I noticed a gap where that may be plausible. Though I'm unfamilar with the source video. Maybe some sort of video filter to try to make it seem like some old film or something, making the speediness seem intentional might work. Or not.

I loved the last line of text at the end by the way. Every great fan edit should conclude like that. ^_^

Actually I was trying to make that "speediness" intentional, as the tremolo that starts the Phantom's version of "Angel of Music" bleeds into Christine and Raoul's last words (at least, that's what I remember) and thus I would have been unable to separate the two tracks short of fading out and fading in. I was kinda going for a cheesy look in these few seconds or so -- like a tape being fast-forwarded. Perhaps it didn't entirely work, I don't know. But it does look better now than in my earlier drafts.
