Some of you may have seen over in the off-topic section that I was working on a fan (term used loosely) edit of the film ‘Batman & Robin’, possibly one of the worst films ever made.

What began as a challenge from my friend ‘BatmanMD’ grew into a quite fun project. I have taken ‘Batman & Robin’, tried to strip away as much ‘ass-ish-ness’ as possible and reconfigured it into a still watchable film. And much to my surprise… it worked!

I’ve asked BatmanMD to type me up a list of the major changes I’ve made (as he’s the Batman nitpicky expert) and I’ll post it soon. I’ll be sending copies out to a few key players for review and will try to make it available at MySpleen.

The running time has been reduced from its original 125 minutes to a lean, mean 63 minutes! Now THAT’S a lot of cuts. But oddly it not only works but works better!

BatmanMD has seen the 99.9% done cut and I’ll let him review it here as eventually I’ll encourage others to do.

63 minutes ... beautiful! That includes credits? I've gotta see this!

Definitely looking forward to this one.

as a person who loved the film Batman and Robin and one of the greatest films ever made . I'm looking forward to this greencapt.

We were laughing because in the absence of most of Arnie's stupid one-liners, the character of Freeze seems much more vicious and in fact the whole film seems darker.

This sounds very interesting. I'm a big Batman fan, but B&R was so bad the only time I've watched it was back in the theater in 1997. I'll definitely want to see this!

BatmanMD tells the story much better than I do, but he was walking into the theater when I walked out of 'Batman & Robin'. He says I looked as if someone had just gang-raped my grandmother or something judging by my expression of shock.

I hadn't re-watched it until he encouraged me to try the edit. Now I've watched it *too* many times, but it actually improves each time.

Now keep in mind that there is just *some* levels of ass that couldn't be helped. But as ourly dearly departed engineer Mr. Scott said- "I'm givin' her all ah've got!"

Indeed, greencapt. An improvement of ANY kind to this film is more than welcome. I'm not expecting something of Batman/Batman Begins quality, and I'm not one who totally loathes Schumacher (I thought Batman Forever was a good movie), so chances are I'll enjoy this edit. If not, it will still be interesting to see what was done to the film to improve it, although I won't remember enough to pick up on most of the changes anyway!

Very true! I think this helps actually. When I sat down to re-watch the film prior to edit, I took note of every time I cringed at a line, or a butt-shot, or an action. That and looking at what really *happens* in the story and what didn't need to be there.

replace that lame homo fighting music in the film and replace it with that dark theme from the first two films

There has been LOTs of soundtrack tweaking, though I didn't use any music from previous films. Actually the majority of the themes in the film are very good- it was just what was going on on-screen that made them sound bad.

And the sad part Gillean is that not only do I *own* that DVD, but I still haven't even picked up any other Batman stuff. May I at least leave the rubber shark????

I think you'll have to otherwise you'd have a hard time explaining how Batman figures out who is behind the crimes...

Commissioner Gordon: It could be any one of them... But which one? Which ones?
Batman: Pretty 'fishy' what happened to me on that ladder...
Commissioner Gordon: You mean where there's a fish there could be a penguin?
Robin: But wait! It happened at sea... Sea. C for Catwoman!
Batman: Yet, an exploding shark 'was' pulling my leg...
Commissioner Gordon: The Joker!
Chief O'Hara: All adds up to a sinister riddle... Riddle-R. Riddler!
Commissioner Gordon: A thought strikes me... So dreadful I scarcely dare give it utterance...
Batman: The four of them... Their forces combined...
Robin: Holy nightmare!

There is to be *ABSOLUTELY NO* disparaging of the 1960s Batman TV/Movie! None. It is a classic piece of work, even if it is out of tune with the original source material...

Greencapt:

I can't wait to see this thing. I'm very busy with my final year of school atm so I haven't been posting much. BUT, I had to pop in and say "Thanks in Advance!" as I'd always hoped someone would fix this disaster-of-a-Batman-movie.

Oddly enough, the new box set coming out in October featuring the first 4 Batman films in 2-Disc Special Editions, was rumored to have an extended 150-minute Director's Cut of Batman Forever. Apparently the idea was thrown about, but ultimately they decided not to do it. In terms of Batman Forever, do you guys think it's bad enough to warrant an edit (much like what Greencapt has done for Batman & Robin)? Or is decent enough to warrant an extended cut?

Yes, if one takes Batman: The Movie properly, as a parody, it's quite a hillarious movie and does its job well.

The problem with Batman & Robin is not only was the 60s style inappropriate for a 1990s movie franchise that had already been established as a serious, quality version of Batman, it was badly executed at that!

Don't feel bad, Greencapt - I bought it too. A guilty pleasure (though I haven't watched it yet.) Camp Rules!

Looks pretty nice!

svenge- I grew watching re-runs of the Adam West 'Batman'... pure cheese, but heck- I *like* cheese!

klokwerk- yeah, they scrapped the idea for Schumacher's director's cut for whatever reason. Probably they were afraid that it would be too much effort for something that too few people truly care about (much like I told BatmanMD when I started this prokect )

MBJ- *does the campy dance* Whoo-hoo!!

That's EXTREMELY dissapointing news about the lack of a Batman Forever Director's Cut. Maybe they'll at least release some of the deleted scenes.
