You just wanted thread views didn't you Frink?

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

^Yep, we could've easily smack-talked in the first, less redundant thread. Heh heh. ;)

And I believe it was Frinky who berated me for making a duplicate post at OT and at FE, despite the fact that many members do not frequent both places and I wanted to reach them both... Shame on me, apparently.

I still don't know if you've actually played this Yahoo game before! :p

5 or 6 years now, but under a different profile.  I've never been commish before, although I've done it the last two years for a football league.

I get paid by the view.

I wanted a thread devoted to the league, instead of talk about signing up.  Hopefully the other thread dies out once the league is set.

"Berate" is a strong word - I would have used "tease."  And really, you should point to the fact that I have duplicate Cutlist threads here and there. :P

Now then, back on-topic...

I'd like to hear from experienced league members about the league settings.  It's pretty similar to the other league I play in, except I dropped the sixth hitting and pitching categories (OPS and Holds) since they're a little more advanced and we have some newbies.  I need to take a closer look at pitching roster spots (SP and RP vs. P) and max innings to make sure it makes sense.  And I'm not 100% decided on the draft yet.  I prefer live, but autodraft is a little easier for newbies (not to mention finding a time everyone can attend).  Finally, I'd like opinions on trading - I like commish review, but with a backup to look at trades I'm involved in.  I hate full league voting because you can get vendettas or people who don't bother to vote.

Thoughts?

I can't remember what OPS is, but I liked Holds once I figured out what it is. I swapped some closers and starters for middle relief guys to build up my Holds category and ended up with the second most, I think. I don't think anyone else understood it either. :p

I can probably copy and paste our settings from last season if you want.

Actually I'd like to hear opinions from the newbies too.  Read up on the settings and ask questions.  I'm not opposed to making the game a bit easier to understand if more people will enjoy it.

Updated OP to add some links from Yahoo, ESPN, and CBS - you can use these to find helpful articles, player rankings, draft strategies, and so on.

You want to draft Albert Pujols if you get the chance, as Ken Tremendous (The Office writer/producer Michael Schuur) wrote in the sadly defunct firejoemorgan.com pointed out in 2007:

Albert Pujols is either the best hitter in baseball or he's damn close. He has 266 career HR and he's played in a total of like 65 baseball games. He has a .418 career OBP. He is 12 feet tall, and each of his lats weighs 80 pounds. His bat is 60 inches long and is made of Bigfoot's spine. He is a monstrous monster who eats sliders. Not balls that were used to throw sliders, mind you -- he has figured out a way to eat the concept of sliders. The dude hits with a closed stance only because Marty Barrett bet him he couldn't hit with a closed stance like Barrett did and still win the MVP and Pujols did it just to stave off the boredom that had come from solving baseball. He once hit a home run on a hit-by-pitch. He has more hits left-handed than anyone in baseball history has right-handed -- and he is right handed. He completed an MD-PhD at Hopkins in one hour and gave a graduation address (in Greek), and he had to miss a game against the Pirates in 2003, and he still went 2-4 with a double. The home run he hit off Lidge in the NLCS....just now landed, in Banff. He is awesome.

In one of my leagues last year I picked #2, and the first guy took Handley Ramirez.  Yay for me!

Actually, if I remember correctly, last year various websites were torn on which should go first.  H-Ram was thought to be equal in AVG and R, vastly superior in SB, and not that shabby in HR and RBI.  Honestly, I can't remember who I had ranked #1.

There's a big kerfuffle in my main basketball league right now. A couple of guys have been doing trades with a kid that has basically stopped playing and people are angry at them for basically padding their teams. We can now dispute trades, which we didn't think we'd have to do before. *shrug*

This is why I prefer commissioner veto over a league vote.  I like to ask the traders what their rationale is for trading if it seems one-sided.

I also like the idea of having two assistant commissioners that also have input on trades.  The trade goes through if two of the three commissioners ok it.  If one of the three is involved in the trade, then both of the other commisioners have to say ok, and if two are involved, it's up to the third.

Slight update to league settings:

I changed the pitchers from 2 SP, 2 RP, and 4 P to 4 SP and 4 RP, in order to simplify things.  Also added a bench spot (now 6 total) and DL spot (now 3 total).

In case you're interested, here's how the innings limit (1250 IP)  breaks down:

You have 4 starting pitcher spots (SP) and 4 reliever spots (RP).  You can use the six bench spots (BN) any way you want, but most people choose to use at least one or two for extra pitchers.

Let's say you use one BN spot for another starter, giving you 5 starters and 4 relievers.  An rough average number of innings for the year is 200 for a starter and 70 for a reliever...

5 SP x 200 IP = 1000 IP
4 RP x 70 IP = 280 IP

Total = 1280 IP

Yahoo standard is 1250 IP, so that's what I went with.

Now, a few pitchers will go over the averages, but a lot will go under (due to injury, benchings, etc.).  So often people will use another BN spot or two on an extra pitcher or two.  It's all up to you what you want to do (you can carry only starters if you want, but I don't recommend it).  The important thing is you can't go over 1250 IP for the year.

I expect this post will generate some questions.  Ask away.

No questions from me. Just don't forget to remind us a few times when draft time approaches...in a timely manner. Time.

It will be around the end of the month.  I'm hoping to get everyone we need in the league before determining a date, that way we can pick a time that works for as many people as possible.
