The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released) — Page 4

While I don’t think a fanedit is ever going to fix this movie for me, I thought I’d still try to help with what sounds like a decent and interesting edit.

My idea is in relation to your goal of removing much of the odd humour that either doesn’t work or is at odds with the tone and emotion of the scene it appears in such as when Luke nochantly tosses his old lightsaber (also his Dad’s old lightsaber) over his shoulder. I can’t remember clearly but do we then see it landing on the ground?

I’m thinking that scene could be edited so that we see Rey hand it to him and he stares back while holding it, a thousand emotions running across his face and then it cuts to simply seeing the lightsaber hit the ground, indicating he’s dropped it / fallen from his grip as he battles with the memories of the last time he held it - fighting Vader with his father’s own lightsaber only to lose the fight, his hand and then come to release Vader is his father and then jumping to his assumed certain death. The scene would pause for a second or two showing the dropped saber resting on the ground and then cut to show him stalking away, obviously overwhelmed.

This is something I expected of TLJ and to have him throw it over his shoulder like it meant nothing and as a joke for the audience was quite offensive really and completely disrespectful on many levels.

Whether just to remove the tone defeating humour or for those additional above reasons, it would be great to see that part edited so. I also can’t remember, but is the scene in TLJ where Rey hands him the lightsaber and he stares back, the exact same footage from TFA? Or did they reshoot it? If reshot, would it be worth replacing TLJ version with footage straight from TFA? That way you get the overcast lighting and Luke’s emotions as portrayed in TFA rather than Rian’s retconned version of the scene.

Another one I can think of which is not only tone defeating but out of character is when Luke brushes of his shoulder after withstanding the barrage of walker fire. It is again only for the audience to laugh at and diminishes the gravity of what is happening in that moment and the battle itself.

Good luck with your edit.

I’d love to see the Wilhelm scream added back in, maybe even a “I have a bad feeling about this” recording from Anthony Daniels over some footage of C3PO.

I wonder if the Leia scene could be sped up considerably, and made to look like it happened near instantly. Could be even while Kylo looks on, or right after he flies away.

Even more radically, though I’m not sure there’s enough footage. You could slow it down, flashing back and forth between Kylo staring at the explosion, and Leia’s face with her eyes closed. End the back and forth with her eyes opening. Then imediately, jump to 1.5x speed of her superman flight, none of her hand twitching or “unfreezing”. Kylo flying away could be right before she opens her eyes, right before she flies back, or right after (my rationalization is that at this point save her or kill her, he’s going to be broken by it.)

Bumping, a rush of responses to the post after mine left it in the dust 😉

Maybe people wouldn’t have minded the lightsaber toss so much if he did it like he tossed his green saber in ROTJ.

Exactly. The way TLJ framed the shots, timed the music cue, and choreographed it, led up to a slapsticky moment meant for comedic impact. If the execution were a bit more serious, it could have been more powerful. It’s probably one my least favorite moment’s in the movie cause it was so close to working.

I just started rewatching The Last Jedi and I had to pause it. Because during the opening prank call scene, Poe says something that I can’t believe hasn’t been nitpicked yet. “Hux… With an H?” Is anyone else bugged by that kind of thing? Star Wars has its own language but now Poe straight up addresses English letters? I feel like a massive geek but I can’t be alone here, can I? Is something like this a line you’re willing to remove, Hal?

You could at least wait until the movie is actually out legally before you start talking about rewatching it, piracy isn’t encouraged around here.

Also, come on man - X-wing? Cell block AA23? TK-421? Every single one of those is from SW77.

Streaming films isn’t actually illegal. It’s uploading or downloading them that is. Also, this thread is all about a proposed fan edit. I can’t help but imagine that not everyone who will be watching it owns a copy of Last Jedi. I don’t know the legality of fan edits, but to stream a film doesn’t feel all that different from watching a fan edited version of it.

Sure, but to address it so blatantly as “that name that begins with the letter ‘H’” makes me think to Sesame Street with the letter of the day, which is somewhat jarring. I might be alone, but the prank call scene already felt jarring as it came off more like parody than the thing a parody would be based on. Then, for a character to address the English language, it just adds to that strangeness. Already, within the first five minutes of the film, I’m taken out of that experience of suspended disbelief.

I remember when EU writers would refer to the droids phonetically See-Threepio and Artoo-Deetoo. So even here the emphasis is on letter sounds and not the letters themselves.

I agree that this line breaks immersion even when there are other examples of individual letters being spoken in Star Wars, and think that it’s not so much the substance of the line but the tone. In Star Wars, even the most absurd names are spoken with sincerity as a way of investing the audience in the reality of the world. When a character refuses to take even their opponent’s name seriously, how can the audience take it seriously? It’s very much like Star Lord challenging Ronan the Accuser to a dance-off, except that The Last Jedi isn’t supposed to be a comedy.

Short answer, I get it.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Glad to hear that! Have you considered or thought at all about editing Luke’s lightsaber to be green instead of blue when he’s on Crait? I’m seeing people nitpick about that, and I think it might just “pop” more than the blue saber did in that scene. Also prefer fan edits to be as different as possible from the original, just for the sake of a new experience. Your editing Mustafar over the Death Star in Revenge of the Sith did that same kind of thing for me.

It was supposed to be Coruscant, but it isn’t present in the current version.
And the lightsaber will not be changed. It is important that it’s the blue one, because Luke finally embraces using it to help the galaxy, reversing his refusal at the beginning of the movie.

I thought it would be nice to mention the biographical novel Phasma, which shows the eponymous character as a coward who doomed Starkiller Base to save herself.

I’ve seen a few of the deleted scenes, though it doesn’t look like they are available in full anywhere yet. So far, as long as the quality is as presentable as it seems it will be, I’d like to include Rey’s third lesson and BB8 showing Finn his recording of the end of TFA.

Noodle_flinger is at it again, already posting a rough cut on Reddit. I took a look, and there’s a few good ideas I’ll likely use for this project. The best one is trimming down Finn’s suicide run; it’s amazing how this helps subvert RJ’s subversion of expectations somewhat, and keep the hypothetical first-time audience from getting to the point where they are fully invested in saying goodbye to Finn in that moment.

I cannot begin editing TLJ until the BluRay is released, for obvious reasons involving linear cause and effect throughout the progression of time in one direction. But, I won’t begin work until I’m 100% finished getting the prequel trilogy output, vetted, and distributed.

I’m not familiar with Noodle_flinger, do you have a link to his cutlist?

It’s on Reddit/r/fanedits and I can’t link to it directly because it contains a download link. Here’s his changelist:

***Rewritten opening crawl to give more political context:
A galaxy in chaos! Both the evil FIRST ORDER and the brave RESISTANCE have been catastrophically decimated, each desperate to snuff out the other and fill the power vacuum left by the extinction of the Republic.

Leader of the Resistance, General Leia Organa, lives in hope that her brother, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker can return to restore peace and order to the galaxy.

As the First Order speeds toward the Rebel base, the fate of the galaxy rests on their escape….

Removed the flute run at the beginning that’s the same as ANH. Replaced with the start of the First Order theme cut from TFA.
Removed Kylo Ren’s theme when the First Order arrives at D’Qar because Kylo Ren is not present. Replaced with First Order leitmotif from the end of “Main Title and Attack on the Jakku Village” from TFA.
Tone down the humor in spots where it doesn’t fit tonally, e.g. Poe and Hux prank call and the Ach-To nun getting hit with the rock are both gone.
Cut Leia slapping Poe.
Cut the green milk scene from Rey following Luke montage.
Trimmed Canto Bight and cut Fathier chase. Finn and Rose join DJ after he propositions them in the cell.
Cut Leia floating way above the force-field of the ship to make her flying more believable. (I tried to cut it, but it really is needed for the film to make sense. Sorry.)
Cut Holdo and Leia scene.
Trim Finn’s fake-out sacrifice so that it doesn’t give you a chance to root for him to go for it.
Moved Canto Bight kids telling the legend of Luke Skywalker to overlay Luke’s death. It’s really beautiful and poignant, trust me. This also allows the film to end with the last of the Resistance on the Falcon.***
