A quick reminder that the Star Wars Preservation and Star Wars Fan Edit sections of the site are NOT the places to bash on certain eras or aspects of the films, actors, film-makers or owners - or any perceived ‘agendas’ or politics thereof.

There are far more relevant threads in the Beyond the Original Trilogy or General Star Wars Discussion sections of the site to talk about this.

Critiquing a scene in the Star Wars Fan Edits section with the aim of improving it, removing it, altering it etc is perfectly fine. Statements such as ‘Disney sucks’ and ‘this film is so shit no Fan Edit can save it’ is not.

Just got back from watching the movie for the first time, and I’m not sure how to feel about lots of it. One thing I am sure of is that I’ll be fan editing the shit out of it as soon as I can, and I’m interested to hear what opinions other fans have.

Tomo, I hope you don’t mind, mate - I’ve edited the thread title just a little to give a bit more of a heads-up as to there being spoilers inside this thread.

Good luck with it - I’ve just got back from seeing it for the first time - and have a feeling there may be some varied and differing takes / approaches to fan edits of The Last Jedi…

(I did enjoy TLJ - a lot, though I think this film may require a few viewings to take everything in)

I could see a few trims to humour, and a few scenes where the CGI didn’t quite work / sit right (though a 2nd viewing is very likely required).

As stated in the other TLJ Spoiler thread… it’ll be interesting to see what deleted scenes we’ll end up getting (and IF those deleted scenes will be in an initial TLJ home release…)

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

I liked TLJ a lot. A lot better than TFA. Even better than the Originals - and then I leave nostalgia out of the picture. I’m talking pure entertainment value and pacing. And apart from a purpose-lacking side story with Finn and Rose, it really stood out as the most refreshing and entertaining addition to the Star Wars saga since the original Star Wars itself.

However, as far as fanediting goes - a restructure might improve the movie greatly. Which we will not know before we try.

Having Finn wake up later in the movie, and focus on Poe and Leia, and Rey and Luke, and Kylo and Snoke for the first hour. Then have Finn wake up after Luke agrees to give her three lessons and teaches her the first, and then focus ten minutes on that storyline to streamline it until they get to Canto Bight, before tuning back in to Rey. This way we can get rid of some of the bizarre inter-cutting between scenes at this segment, and make time pass between Rey’s lessons (makes it more likely for there to be more training for her between scenes).

I think over half of the reason why people - including myself, find Finn & Rose storyline lacking was because this happened in-between our anticipiation of Rey and Luke’s development and story together, and Leia and Poe and the Resistance’s survival. Having Finn in a coma on one of the ships until we get enough satisfactory time with Luke and Rey and Leia and Poe, will make it much more intruiging - I think - to get Finn back in the picture.

Also, there could be needed some new music or new placement of music for better emotional impact. What disappointed me the most about this movie was actually the score. There was no piece that stood out. Nothing I hum too that wasn’t already established. Luke should’ve had the most epic chorus theme when he shows up at the end. This will literally be half of the only reason why I will do an edit (probably maybe just for my own viewing pleasure).

Yay. I am very much looking forward to the deleted scenes.

I already have quite a few ideas:

-remove Luke milking the animal
-remove Leia superman moment
-MAYBE remove Luke messing with Rey with the piece of grass in the first lesson. Apart of me wants to streamline the scene and its tone, but another part of me just can’t resist removing literally one of the best jokes in the movie in my opinion.
-Most importantly, cut down and restructure the Canto Bight scene the most possible. For sure cutting down the weird horse chase sequence. Also remove most jokes in this sequence. Mainly just streamline and restructure this so it moves by a lot quicker, eats up less screen time, and we feel like we spend more time with Rey and Luke as an audience.
-remove many of the jokes. Some off the top of my head would maybe be Luke wiping his shoulder (maybe), removing Hux repeating Kylo’s command, remove Hux’s “You think we got him”. Mainly just make that sequence have much less humor.
-maybe end the scene on the falcon. The broom boy scene is kind of growing on me but we’ll see.
-Like Anojan said, maybe some rescoring in some places. There was nothing that stood out, but the score worked for the most part.

Agree wholeheartedly with many of the above.

Again, alas, I think Phasma is expendable (I removed her completely in my TFA edit and think I can do without much effort here).

I 100% believe Del Toro’s character was originally envisioned for Lando. The whole Canto stuff seems so separate it may end up on MY cutting room floor too.

And yes, knock the goofiness (milking…) down a few percent. Humour is fine, but don’t beat a joke to death.

Many characters are shortchanged but I’m not sure how to rectify that without missing footage potentially.

There IS a lot of good in this movie, just perhaps too many balls in the air. Can’t wait to get my hands on it and have a play.

On this, I saw DJ as an alternative, almost a mirror, to Han - yet DJ is the character that never picked a side, and continued on a path where money ruled his head - and heart.

Though that is just my take, of course.

Do you guys think anything I could do something about the first scene? I don’t think it bothers that many people so I think I’ll have to deal with it myself.

One thing that every edit needs to cut out:

Finn’s “Who do you think mopped up on that Star Destroyer?” comment (or whatever it was he said).

I didn’t mind the “sanitation” thing in TFA, since it was implied that he was only in sanitation while stationed at SKB, and he almost certainly had other, more stormtrooper-y posts when he was stationed at other locations.

But TLJ implying that he was also in sanitation on that Star Destroyer implies that a janitor is all he ever was. Which doesn’t sit right with me at all.

Ha, funny because a lot of people took the TFA “sanitation” comment the same way I’m taking the TLJ “mopping” comment, but I didn’t have that issue with the TFA one at all!

It might stick out less on a rewatch, I dunno yet.

I just doubt that they would have stormtroopers that only mop floors. That just seems like one of their duties.

Some ideas that come to mind after one viewing:

  • Remove as much Porg presence as possible

  • Remove Luke getting some blue milk

  • Remove Leia’s Superman moment (straight into the healing chamber?)

  • Trim Canto Bight heavily (get to DJ as soon as possible and remove / trim the CGI fest after with the space horses)

  • Remove Maz Kanata’s “Battlefront 2” Skype call

  • Remove LOADS of “funny stuff” throughout the film (starting with Poe Dameron’s cringe-y “General Hugs”)

Everything involving Luke (minus milking the alien) is perfect. The whole “The Rebellion is reborn” quote is badass.

My biggest issue, other than the fragmented storylines, was that the starship chase and Godspeed Maneuver™ made little tactical sense.

Why couldn’t the First Order simply swarm the capital ship with TIE fighters until it went down? Why are all the ships traveling at a fixed speed? Why hasn’t anyone else used the Godspeed Maneuver™ as a weapon? It seems like a hyperdrive would be one of the most deadly weapons in the galaxy if just any ship could do this.

Oh, and I don’t care if Phasma stays or goes.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this film. On the one hand it was a great movie and had some very strong moments of action, (Admiral Holdo save the day scene) expanded lore, (force based Skype and astral projection) and drama (the throne room scene.) On the other hand, the direction they went with Luke’s ark was just abysmal in my opinion.

I felt that the backstory/raison’detre for Kylo Ren and Luke’s confrontation and Ren’s turn to evil really just ruins Luke’s ark as a character over the course of the whole saga. It makes our hero into a huge asshole who didn’t amount to much or learn anything.

Luke knows about pain, loss, and extreme darkness first hand ten times over, but he needs to kill Kylo Ren to stop his power? Or think about doing it? Absolute BS!!!

That plot point alone invalidated whole swathes of lessons learned from the original films. Its as though OT Luke didn’t even exist or lose his limb, his aunt, uncle, father, mother, and mentor.

The idea of Luke being afraid of his Nephew’s power is like the idea of Freddy Kruger being afraid of the dark. ARE YOU KIDDING me?

The idea that Luke is VERY scared of Ren’s darkness is just absurd.

I appreciate that they were going for a “broken” or disillusioned take on Luke, where the weight on his shoulders of rebuilding the Jedi order was so overwhelming. Being deified and of mythic proportions would sour anyone who was alive to see it happen to them.

I also understand that Luke perceived training to be an ultimately dead end vis Jedi, due to the flaw he saw of hubris in Jedi teachings, but the way this was handled in the movie was just bad.

That to me constitutes the central flaw of the film. I did not fundamentally believe that we were dealing with Luke Skywalker at all.

If anything, it was like “Luuke” the clone, from the Heir to the Empire novels.

-I would have made Rey into Kylo’s half sister. Han could have been her dad, and an unknown woman her mother. The conflict between Luke and Kylo could have been framed in such a way that Ben was just sick of all the lies from his family, and this could have fed his turn. Luke in turn could have felt betrayed by Han, and passive aggressively (Jedi Hubris) taken it out on Kylo.

Sending Rey away (because Luke is following the Jedi code where attachment is forbidden,) could have been the spark that lead to Kylo’s turn rather than Luke trying to kill Ben. It would also mean that Luke actually learned and grew as a Character.

I absolutely loved Snoke’s command ship, and I thought of some edit ideas surrounding that.

  • If parts of Episode 7 and 8 could be joined such that Snoke’s ship would replace the star killer base concept, this would add weight and uniqueness to both films.

(A mobile super weapon destroyed by a loyal officer’s self sacrifice would be so perfect and make a more menacing weapon.)

The plot hole created by Episode 8’s “mobile death star tech” made a bigger hole out of Star killer base than it was before, so replacing Star Killer Base, and editing 7 and 8 together might fix that.

-Scenes from 7 could also add much needed breathing time to The Last Jedi. For being a 2 1/2 hour film, it never gave anyone time to breathe or process.

  • The Gambling planet ends up just being a pointless plot device. (another version of finding the map to sky walker anyone?)

-Battlefront 2 Maz Kanata scene needs to be axed

  • Frozen floating miracle Leia scene needs to be recut or removed. If we can make it look like a force field caught her before she goes out into space, that would be a cool fix.

  • The New Yoda puppet looks like its the family guy Yoda cartoon character made for live action film. I loved the scene itself, its heart, and its humor, but I have to ask if they even checked reference photos or the Archives? Did Frank Oz know it wouldn’t even look like Yoda?

  • No backstory for Snoke? JESUS CHRIST ON A BIKE MAN! Upon seeing what happened, I was really wondering how to pull off a future film in 9? Totally wasted potential with Snoke.

That is quite literally my favorite piece of dialogue in the whole movie. And then there’s stuff like this which has to go:

“Kylo Ren is strong in the dark side and we have to stop him.”

Could there not be a less clunky way of saying that?

^ I think that line was supposed to sound clunky, the way Luke would hear it.

One tiny thing I’d like to see fixed by one of us is when Luke sits down on a crate (on Crait) to talk to Leia. The crate he sits down on moves in response, when it ought to remain totally stationary. It’s the same as if when Obi-Wan sat on a log on Dagobah the log creaked and bent.
(And yes, I just got out of a second viewing in one day. And yes, I’m mentally exhausted.)

Oh, I always thought that Luke could physically interact with his surroundings if he desired which made his force projection even more powerful than a regular force ghost. Hence things like the kiss on Leia’s forehead. I feel like with Luke’s powers, that if he really wanted, he could have sliced Kylo in half. But instead, he chose to become non-physical for matters of defense.

At least that’s how I saw it. I felt like that was one of the few major differences between a force projection and a force ghost.
