Today I bought The Godfather DVD Collection. It's the "red leather" 4 disc set (digipack). I love the covers btw, no text, no logos, just great pictures.

Now, I have never seen any of the Godfather movies. I have never even seen a trailer. I know nothing about it. I don't even know what the story is about. I just know the movies have high scores at IMDB. And ofcourse I heared from everybody they are very good movies.

I think tonight I will watch the first movie and I'm kind of excited.

When i first saw the Godfather i was dissapointed. In fact i still think it is only so-so. Just be prepared: it is long, soap opera-ish and somewhat dated since it has been rendered a bit conventional due to its endless copying. Still an important film, but personally i wouldn't expect anything too mindlblowing. Strange for me as well since Coppola is one of my favourite directors. Godfather II on the other hand is magnificent, very different from the first film and more comparable to Coppola subsequent masterpieces The Conversation and Apocalypse Now in terms of direction and style.

The third entry was very criticised upon release. In truth, it is not all that great, but it definitly has its moments. The biggest thing is that it is so disconnected from the first two. To best approach the series it is best to do it the way Coppola himself designed the films: Godfather and Godfather II go together to form one story. Coppola ironically fought against titling the second film uniquely because he felt it was simply the second part to the first film. The film ends brilliantly and really finishes the saga. The third film was not supposed to be "Godfather 3", Coppola wanted it to be called The Death of Michael Corleone, and i think that shows how the film should be evaluated--a sort of epilogue off-shoot that is disconnected from the proper I/II story and gives a sort of different perspective to the character about his redemption.

Thank you for the warning. I'll just watch it without (great) expectations.

The Godfather maybe good but manos the hands of fate is the greatest ever.

Godfather I & II are easily 2 of the best movies ever made. Some of the greatest acting some of the most thrilling and tense scenes just all around 2 fantastic flicks.

I have never seen these films. Mafia stories have never really excited me too much. I should probably look into this series though.

You are kidding, right?

The first and second Godfather movies are among the greatest ever made, that's all there is to it.

That's a great DVD collection. The films could have been transferred/restored a bit better, but overall a very fine job from all parties involved.

A fun easter egg... on the bonus disc, go to the DVD credits, and keep clicking "Next," even when you get to the last page. You get a nice little clip from a certain show .

I don't have a bonus disc. The discs only contain the movies. It's a 4 disc set but movie 2 is spread over 2 discs.

Yeah, to me Godfather parts I and II were pretty nice... albeit exhaustingly boring...

but Part III... is exhaustingly bad.

I think the 3 disk thing might be a non-R1 thing.

It's a 4 disc set. But movie 2 is 192 minutes so they used 2 disc for it (1 dvd9 and 1 dvd5).
