Ian Mckellen and others signed for The Hobbit movies.

They also signed i believe Kate Blanchett, Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood.

Not sure about Christopher Lee or Hugo weaving, but i do know that Orlando bloom is a holdout but they are hopeful they can convince him to sign.

This along with Jackson as writer and director and producer of Both films, They have Howard Shore back for the music.  Which will undoubtedly be done at abbey road studios with the London philharmonic.

They only snag i see, no confirmation of Andrew Laszlo as cinematographer, and they are shooting on red digital 3-D instead of super 35.

I know that McKellen has signed on officially.  Haven't hear a damn thing about Blanchett or Serkis (though I'd be shocked if Serkis wasn't in it), but where the fuck are you getting Elijah Wood?  How does he have any place in The Hobbit?

I'd be really annoyed if it turns out to be bookended by Elijah-Frodo reading the story from Bilbo's book...

Why?  It makes perfect sense from a marketing standpoint.  From what I've read, there are only a couple of characters from the LOTR stories in The Hobbit.  If they're going to get people other than the LOTR fanbois into the theaters, they have to feature some of the characters from the LOTR films in some capacity.  Since Frodo doesn't appear in The Hobbit at all, using him as a framing device in the film makes sense, and adds the recognition factor they'll need to help make an otherwise unfamiliar story a success.  (Besides, they have to do something to pad out a single book into two films...)

There are 10 types of people in this world: those who understand binary, and those who do not.

Dammit! That is so incredibly stupid. So, counting Frodo, Galadriel, Saruman, and Legolas, that makes four characters cast in this movie who do not appear in the original book, but who did star in the previous LOTR trilogy. Anyone else getting PT vibes yet?

So Elijah Wood is confident "in whatever they're going to do in terms of bringing in any familiar characters back, just knowing their sense of upholding integrity." Like Fox Mulder, I want to believe...but I'm dubious. Seems to me that these familiar characters and familiar actors are being brought back for one of two reasons, or likely both: (1) Because of nostalgia (it's been well over a decade since LOTR was shot, and I'm sure everyone's looking forward to "getting the old group back together."; (2) To lend the new films some of the credibility of the old, and thus "tie the two together."

In my opinion, neither of these reasons is a good reason to make a casting or writing decision. These decisions need to be made on the basis of good storytelling. And I certainly have more faith in PJ's ability to make good storytelling decision than, say, GL's. But I'm still dubious.

Actually at lot of the Hobbit retcons were done by Tolkien himself in Lord of the Rings, and the later drafts of the Silmarillion to tie all three works together.

The Hobbit can be read as a standalone or as a prequel to the lord of the rings.

The white council in Lord of the Rings mentioned happens in the hobbit timeline.  It is when Sauron spirit came back in Mirkwood, and Saruman was there at the white council being false because he knew the one ring was not destroyed and desired to be its master.

The necromancer was original just put in the story to get Gandalf to leave the company, after Lord of the Rings was published a much more sinister evil lingers in that name because he and Sauron are one and the same.

Also by rewriting riddles in the dark Tolkien made the ring a more sinister device because blibo's original story as published in the first edition of the ring being a present from Gollum for winning the riddle contest a lie.  Too similar to Gollums birthday present story.

I thought it was great when Deltoro was going to do it because he was going to limit the use of CGI and stay faithful to the book.

It would tie in with the end of the LOTR film trilogy, where Frodo's story is added to Bilbo's.

The films aren't the books and I don't have too much of a problem with that.

I'm willing to enjoy the framing story. "The Hobbit" film is not only an adaptation of "The Hobbit" book but is also going to be for many people the sequal to LOTR. It's important that viewers understand how the stories fit together.

I'm curious exactly HOW Galadriel and Saruman will fit in. Tolkien DOES have a place for them in the wider tale, so it's not like it's mindless fanwank, but it's not in the book exactly.

I seem to recall Christopher Lee saying he was 'too old for this shit'.

[he may not have used those particular words]

I remember Christopher Lee saying that he'd be willing to do it if they shot in the UK, but that he doesn't want to fly all the way to New Zealand at his age.

I don't like the idea of the Frodo "framing" story, but that's because I feel The Hobbit as a film should be able to be viewed before The Lord of the Rings trilogy without spoiling anything.  But that's just me.  I can deal.  And if I can't, I can fan edit later.

This is why I don't have a problem with a lot of the LOTR actors that don't appear in the book The Hobbit being in the movie.  It seems that most of their stuff will be stuff Jackson drew directly from Tolkien's other writings about stuff that happened during The Hobbit, so I'm willing to give PJ the benefit of the doubt.

I haven't read The Hobbit in a few years, but aren't there several instances where Gandalf wanders off and the book stays with Bilbo. Who says that the movie won't follow Gandalf having a sidequest or two while intercutting with Biblo's adventure.

That'll be the weird part. Will we intercut from some epic battle of Wizards and Orcs and Gollud-Dor and the Necromancer... and then back to Bilbo in a barrell?

I'm very curious what the plan is.

There is a soft core porno that comes on at about 3 am called Lord of the G Strings. The main characters are 3 throbbits LOL.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Will Peter Jackson be able to make it so it doesn't look like Gandalf just wanders off and happens to show up EXACTLY when Bilbo needs him at least twice? Cause that was pretty weak in the book IMO.
