The Dark Knight (Batman Begins Returns Again)

From Warner Bros.:
As a follow up to last year’s blockbuster Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Dark Knight, written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan. Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. The announcements were made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Christopher Nolan revamped the Batman franchise in 2005 with the immensely successful Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale in the title role, which chronicled the early years of the superhero. Nolan first garnered attention from critics and fans in 2000 with the groundbreaking drama Memento, which he wrote and directed. He went on to direct the thriller Insomnia, starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, and recently wrapped production on The Prestige, with Hugh Jackman and Bale.

Bale was most recently seen in the ensemble cast of Terrence Malick’s The New World. His other credits include Little Women, Portrait of a Lady, Metroland, American Psycho, Laurel Canyon and Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun, which was his first starring role.

Ledger most recently earned Oscar Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award nominations and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the award-winning drama Brokeback Mountain. His other credits include Casanova, Monster’s Ball, Lords of Dogtown, The Brothers Grimm and The Patriot.

“Chris’ unique vision is what made Batman Begins such an outstanding film and we could not imagine anyone else at the helm of The Dark Knight,” said Robinov. “We also can’t wait to see two such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with each other as Batman and The Joker.” “I'm excited to continue the story we started with Batman Begins,” added Nolan. “Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale’s Batman is going to be incredible.”

Production is set to begin on The Dark Knight in early 2007.

Additional info according to Batman On Film:
As you have long suspected, the two main villains in the BATMAN BEGINS sequel will be The Joker and The Penguin.

It seems Nolan has been listening to you guys when it comes to casting his other villain, however. I can confirm that an offer has been made to Phillip Seymour Hoffman for the role. Yet Hoffman has indicated that he may not get involved in the sequel.

So the scuttlebutt long reported by BOF that The Penguin will be in the sequel looks like it could be true (The rumor is that he'll be a British arms dealer/mob boss with designs on Gotham).

Sweet! Can't wait!

Heath Ledger as the Joker? Not something I would have thought of, personally, but it'll be exciting to see him take on the role. I wonder if he will be dubbed over when he starts to go mad?

The Penguin will be in the sequel? interesting. Why is it that no two versions of The Penguin are alike?
I agree that Heath Ledger is unusual choice for the Joker. Hopefully it isn't just because the producers felt that they needed a hot "latest thing" actor. But he may be great. He is a talented actor. I wonder what his take on the Joker will be.

Whoo-hoo! I'd read about this on Wikipedia, but it's good news regardless.

I just hope Ledger is good as the Joker. Maybe they could dub his voice over with Mark Hamill...

I read somewhere a while back that quoted Nolan saying he wanted the Joker to have a homicidal and sadistic edge like never before, which in my opinion, is never gotten right. The comics show it, but the movies just don't show him as psychotic as he should be.

I always thought the Animated series did a good job of that.

In the first (1989) Batman film he just seemed like an eccentric sociopath, not out-and-out insane.

TAS did come close, but due to its very nature as a childrens show(albiet very mature and adult at the same time) just couldn't take his sadistic ways as far as they needed to go.

Have you seen 'Return of the Joker', man? Doesn't get much more sadistic than that.

The Batman Beyond Tie-In? Of course.

I want The Joker to be one evil MF'er that strangles kittens when he wakes up in the morning.

*Casts Auto-Res on Warbler* There, you're not dead no more.

Though I too fear that there is something fishy about this. I think Ledger is too young to play the Joker, for one.

He is only 5 years younger than Bale.

I AGREE, BUT I'LL WAIT TO PASS JUDGEMENT UNTIL I SEE THE FILM.

I know, but Joker is older than Batman in all other incarnations.

I can't wait to see if this will lead in to Two Face and show him properly, like with multiple personality's and all.

I won't be happy with this film unless it deals with incredibly in-depth origin sequences for both the Joker and the Penguin. Specifically for the Penguin, they need to have some horrible accident happen to him that fuses his fingers together, make him short and pudgy, and squawk like a penguin. Then we can have some nice, long dramatic scenes of "the Penguin" dealing with his new horrible life by becoming a charismatic psychopath. IT WOULD BE SO FANTASTIC!

Ghyah, I HATE origin sequences. I will not tolerate one more in a stupid comic book movie. If this movie has one, I'll be forced to hate it.

---POTENTIAL SPOILERS?---

Penguin's not in it. I go to Columbia College Chicago, film major, and I know several kids who were interns on the set when it was filming in Chicago, and I have it on good authority that Heath Ledger is amazing as the Joker, and that the other villain is Two-Face, but only at the very end.

Whooooohooooo!! That would have been LAME. All the focus should be on Joker anyway. As we saw with Spidey 3, too major villians sacrifices way too much.

Man, I nearly flipped out when I read Warbler's name, then I realized this was a year old thread.

Heath Ledger wasn't my first choice for the Joker. I would have gone with someone like Paul Bettany or Crispin Glover, but I'll wait till I see Heath's Joker in action to form an opinion.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

I'm sure Crispin Glover thought it was his "density" to play The Joker.

For the record, I think Glover may have also made a very creepy Scarecrow/Jonathan Crane.

Too bad we'll probably never see Catwoman/Selina Kyle in the Nolan Batman films. Halle Berry's fake Catwoman film probably ruined that chance for us.

Glover would make an interesting Riddler ... less like Gorshin and Carrey, perhaps more like the comics.

I loved the idea of The Penguin being in it, but not as the DeVito freak show but rather a polished british gentleman. Hoskins would be the shiznit.

As cool as a proper Penguin portrayal would be, the Joker deserves his own movie. He's the ultimate villain for batman . . . since Batman has no sense of humor.

I figured Two Face would figure into this movie in some way, after all the Harvey Dent poster advertising stuff.
