The ANH:SE Redux Ideas thread (Radical Ideas Welcome).

Editors like Adywan have worked wonders but are there any other ideas that could be worked on by other editors to add even more to what has already been accomplished.

Here’s a couple of crude mockups to get the ball rolling.

1st, That Jabba Scene…surplus to requirement at the moment but by adding different subtitles and re-colouring it to match his look in ROTJ it could add more than just say again what the Greedo scene did so well (especially if someone could work out what to do with his tail without Han stepping on it).

Jabba Colour

Holographic communications appear in every Star Wars film but in ANH all we get is Leia’s message.

It would make sense that Tarkin would want to get news about Dantooine ASAP so why not have the message delivered over the holonet?

That big ball on the conference table must serve some function (not unless it’s for Imperial Fondue parties).

No. I think is fine. It would be throwing suger ontop of syrup. But with Adywans permission, somebody could do anything they wanted.

The person your searching for simply does not exist

I'd like to see a scene after the rebels victory but before the throne room awards that shows Vader returning to coruscant and handing Obi-Wan's saber to the Emperor saying "Order 66 is complete my master" or something along those lines. Or even saying "I have failed" in regards to the Death Star and then the emperor shocks Vader. wishful thinking I know. Glimpses of Coruscant throughout the OT would be nice because it's pretty much the focal point in the Pt and yet is never seen in the OT.

Like a serious version of the now immortal Robot Chicken skit?

Perhaps a different form of tarting up the "Mind Probe" by focusing on the beam thing at the bottom instead of the needle.

I think what Adywan has done is pretty fine as it is.  If I COULD make any changes, they would be as follows:

at the least, it seems that there are some music ques that are a little odd sounding,

(1) the sad music when Obi's robes fall down after Vader strikes him
- while I can go either way with the DOTF music playing during the Vader/Obi duel, it seems that something needs to be done so the music doesn't sound like it's crashing into each other from the dramatic music when Vader makes his blow, the sad music when Obi's robes fall down and then the Luke's shock music begins.  If you took out the sad music in the middle (but left the sound effects), it would create a buffer between the two dramatic pieces as well as give a pause right before the Luke's shock music que kicks in.

(2) the EMPIRE theme during the TIE reveal in the Last Battle
- I love the new TIE reveal (which balances the X-Wing pan reveal earlier), but the EMPIRE theme is more designed for the larger ships, being that it is similar to Soviet parade or march music.  If the music could be replaced with something faster paced and more ANH sounding, it would help the whole sequence flow better.

If I was skilled at photoshop and after effects, I would:
(3)  replace the planet below the Death Star with the matte shots of Endor to essentially give the impression that Endor was the Empire's "Area 51" so to speak.  I love the addition of the planet, but the planet imagery itself is a little "Babylon 5ish".
(4) replace the Alderaan explosion with the original sans explosion ring, or at least something as close as possible.
(5) when the MF escapes from Tatooine, I would either re-insert the spinning star field or have the stars streak as the MF sped away.  While the spinning star field may not make much logical sense, it served as a visual que to help deliver the scene emotionally.

Other than that, I think that Ady's edit is about as good as ANH could ever get.

Granted, the idea of the sphere on Tarkin's desk projecting a hologram I think is a good idea (again, to give it purpose) and would make sense that the officer sent to investigate would contact Tarkin from Dantooine.  In regards to the Jabba scene, I was never keen on it remaining in the movie as Greedo essentially states Han's situatuion quite nicely.  While it may be an interesting scene (like the Anchorhead scenes), it doesn't quite fit in with the way the editing of ANH as it currently exists.  Doesn't mean one can't put it in though...

Oh yeah, something it seems Ady and others may have missed:
in the hanger sequence at the end, there is a Y-wing in the foreground in the expansive hanger shot.  You can clearly see that the engine pod and Y-wing head are completely seperate pieces and are not connected - the body doesn't exist!

Changes I'd make to Ady's "Revisited" (not counting the "Purist" edition, which I know contains some of the changes I'd like to make, but removes some of the changes I liked about ANH:R):

1. Remove the torture droid's mini-lightsaber-needle-thingie.  If there's one change to be made to ANH:R, that's it.

2. Return Obi-Wan's death to normal speed, with the original music (I'm indifferent on the duel music - it's a little out of place, but not too bad).

3. Remove the music in the Death Star "briefing" room.  The only bit of truly unnecessary added music.

That's it.  Otherwise, it's THE perfect version of ANH.

Oh, almost forgot, one more change:

Re-do the whole thing at 4K (or even 6K) resolution and print it back to 35mm film for theatrical distribution.

Yeah, I actually liked all of those things. The music in the briefing makes that scene so much better IMO.

I agree with 1 and 2, but I actually liked the music in the briefing room much better than I liked the duel music. I find the fight music to be a little too exciting for the subject matter, but it works alright. Change 1 and 2 and I would never hear anyone complaining at the showings I do. :P

I'd agree with ChainSawAsh on ANH:R Mark II (or 2.55, as the case may be)...

The only other things I'd add to that list is returning Vader's eyes to red, returning the "spinning camera shot" of the Falcon as it flies past, fixing the "monochrome effect" (loss of all color other than the red lights) we see in that shot of Vader getting the TIE Pilots to follow him down the hall, and the brief glimpse of Tarkin brooding right before the Death Star blows up.

In fact, instead of showing the exact same footage of the beam building up in the chamber (with operators shielding their eyes), I'd remove that and just show Tarkin and then the explosion as before (with the beams animating into position before it blows... subtle, without a complete repeat of the previous footage).

For ESB:R Mark II, the one change I can think of immediately is restoring all the TIE fighters in ESB to brilliant blue. ;)

Of course I'd really love to see someone restore the deleted ANH footage and come up with a cut that has the option to play the movie with those scenes interspersed back into the cut.

Vader's Eyes are definetely suberb as black.

If you like tho the red at least someone should cover the actor's eyes from inside :)

Vader's red eyes were always an accidental problem, and the same with the "monochrome" effect. I can sympathize with the spinning hyperspace shot and the missing shot of Tarkin, but neither really has a huge impact on the film.

I did think last night that it would be fun to remove the Torture Droid and replace it with a couple of smaller ones to mirror Darth Maul's probes.

That way the mind probes are Sith issue instead of standard Imperial equipment (something that Vader personally uses with the Force to reach into the minds of his victims).

The needle looks too here and now and it must be a bugger for the poor thing to stick it's patient.

I always figured it was a medical droid converted to torture people.

Its pretty useless to imagine Stormies with Clone markings.

I mean is good for still images but in live action is something else.

Who knows.

I liked the fact that Vader's wonky chest plate is still wonky, It's just the thing Lucas would do, tart up here and there but forget to fix things.

They must have spent a fortune animating TPM's Jabba for the DVD and then they coloured him incorrectly and left in all the mistakes that Adywan spent time isolating and putting right.

Come to think of it, did Ady fix the chest plate?

Someone could completely remaster ANH's audio, to remove that tinny sound it has and make the dialougue flow better. (not from an acting perspective I mean, from a quality. It's obvious that TONS of lines are pulled from different sources because of varying background fuzz and eq settings between lines). You could pull most dialougue from a consistent source. I'm actually embarking on a project like this, and am tinkering with EQ to remove the tinny sound.

Yeah nowadays that scene would be a Stormtrooper communicating directly to Tarkin by hologram. Holograms all over the place in the prequels. Even the Clonetroopers have special hand held hologram communications. it's ridiculous...

It's not ridiculous...If you have the technology it should be used to the fullest. That's like walking up to someone's house that lives 1/4 mile away when you could just text them or call them.
