Terminator 2 Full Frame Color Correction (ON HIATUS)

This has always been something I’ve always had on the backpedal, but I’ve always wanted to actually do. To make a long story short, Terminator 2’s color correction has always bugged me with every version. Whether it be with the VHS, the DVDs, the Blu-rays, they’ve always looked off to me. The new 4K version looks better, but they also did a lot of revisionist stuff with that that I’m not too keen on. So imagine my shock when I watch the trailer and see the colors and how much better they are there.

So since I also acquired the Russian full-frame DVD recently as well as have been messing around with DrDre’s ColorMatch tool on some other projects, I figured “Why not color correct the film to match the trailer?”

So that’s exactly what I’m doing.

What do you guys think? I’m working on this in my spare time, but I already have quite a bit done. I might also make a widescreen version if the demand is high. If you guys want to help or give further advice, please PM me.

YES!! I’m working on a T2 edit myself and I LOVE the color timing of the trailers. You can tell the blue filters hadn’t been added yet, and the night-time shots look more ‘purple’, while the daytime shots don’t have that ‘pink’ push. I have a German dvd that someone was nice enough to mail to me, and while the color timing is all over the place, there are a lot of scenes that look just like the trailer. I’d love to use this copy, but it’s a bad quality, non-amorphic presentation.

I have a full-frame copy as well with slightly better than VHS/DVD quality (576p instead of 480p), but it has a hard purple push to it, and it’s PAL format.

Also, someone over on another site is working on an edit that combines the full-frame with the widescreen (leaving black boxes in the four corners).

Alright, small update: Having a few issues with interior shots, but otherwise going smoothly. Will post more pics by tonight.

I’ll still grab the UHD release. What’s the verdict on that new restoration though?

I beleive its mostly disliked, but IMO, it looks great, but needs some work on some scenes. There is a green tint that is noticable in the earlier scenes, but is still somewhat prevalent later on. There is a lot more detail here over the 2009 BR. The 09 BR is softer looking and pink in areas, while this one is sharp and teal. The new print is definitely my go-to until someone regrades it.

I just recall from the cinema-release trailer that i looked like it had been DNR’d to hell and back. Maybe the UHD didn’t receive the same punishment?

I’m sorry for the lack of updates, I’ve just been having a rough time recently. I’m still trying to work on this, but it’s not going very fast as you can tell. I’ll try to get an update in by the end of the month.

I know I missed the deadline, but unfortunately, I’m gonna have to put this project on hiatus for a while. Not permanent, it’s just that I’ve had a bit of a rough month and I feel like I’ve bitten off a bit more than I could chew at the moment. So I’m gonna just put this aside for a little bit, do some other things, then when I’ve got a bit more experience and maybe a little bit of help, then I’ll come back and finish this. I’m sorry I said I’ll post something by the end of April only to put the project on hold. If any of you are interested in the project, PM me and I can give you whatever progress I’ve made so far.
