Idea: TNG intro to Star Trek 09 - Nemesis fan edit

Greetings!

The cast of The Next Generation sorta blew their chance at a big emotional send-off by appearing in the frankly dismal, funereal movie Nemesis. I’ve heard one or two good defenses of the movie. But it’s generally accepted as quite poor.

By the time JJ Abrams took up the resuscitation of the franchise, TNG was pretty much left in the dust. There was a very nice tie-in comic, called Countdown, that gave the TNG crew a neat send off. Of course this was only in ink and not quite satisfying to their fans.

I gave Countdown away so I’m just going by memory here. As I recall, the basic premise was that Enterprise E was grappling with Nero just before he went through the wormhole. His emergence from the wormhole, and the subsequent battle with the Kelvin, opens the movie.

I’ve been cutting together scenes from Nemesis and Trek 09 to tell a story of Picard going head to head with Nero.

Most of Enterprise E’s scene come from the first encounter with the Scimitar, in Nemesis. While the Narada’s scenes mostly come from the opening sequence of Trek 09.

Here’s the basic rundown:

  • <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>Paramount/Bad Robot Logos</span>
  • Enterprise E <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>cruising. Music fades to Goldsmith/Picard’s Captain’s Log.</span>
  • <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>“Captain’s log, stardate ____, The Enterprise has arrived at Romulus and is waiting…”</span>
  • <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>Bridge scene. “Maybe we should raise shields.”</span>
  • <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>Picard says keep shields off. In the real</span> Nemesis<span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>, the</span> Scimitar <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>decloaks on the viewscreen behind Picard. In this, the</span> Narada <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>appears instead.</span>
  • <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>(Side note: I am an amateur, so replacing the image is proving a bit tricky. Also, I am considering adding a distortion effect to make the</span> Narada <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>appear to decloak.)</span>
  • <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>Picard’s conversation with the Reman viceroy can be played against Captain Robau’s conversation with Ayel. Just use Picard and Ayel and it sounds near enough like a conversation!</span>
  • <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>So Ayel tells Picard to come over to the</span> Narada <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>to talk to Nero.</span>
  • <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>Grab shots of a shuttlecraft leaving the</span> E <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>and probably composite the</span> Narada <span style=“font-size: 1.2em; line-height: 1.2em;”>in the background. </span>

The rest is a little murky at the moment.

There are a couple shots of Robau walking through the Narada that I might be able to pass off as Picard. MIGHT. It’s dark, he’s bald, and his back is to us.

I was thinking of grabbing some audio from the TNG show of Picard talking about Ambassador Spock, just to tighten the conversation there. While that old audio of Picard is playing, I would just keep the shot on Nero sulking.

Given George Kirk’s and Picard’s solution to defeating the Romulans is basically the same (ram the ship into the other ship), I might be able to convincingly replace shots of the destruction of the E’s bridge with the explosions in the heart of the Narada.

Obviously, there are a few narrative concerns, as well as some visual concerns. But I think this could work, and be a very nice 10 minute, or so, alternate intro to the 09 reboot movie.

I'm interested in checking this out. Any idea how long the work will take?

Fascinating.

This could be a cool alternate intro if it can be pulled off and not seem too contrived.

I'm intrigued, definitely would love to see the TNG crew go out with a bigger bang.

It's taking so long!

The broad storyline is worked out. I thought I could manage it with cuts only, but I'm discovering that some basic SFX are necessary. And I'm no good at SFX. So I'll probably just piece everything together and not be overly worried about the tech details that I can't handle.

A rough cut should be uploaded by next weekend...give or take.

There may be others willing to help with effects, assuming they have the equipment, talent, time, and interest in it. Hopefully there is.

Thanks for the idea!

If anyone is interested in helping, let me know. I will concentrate this week's hobby time on piecing a rough cut together.
