How about starting at 1:09:00  for 30 seconds.

Just to support "the grain theory" (like it, eh?) I regrained Predator UHE, and, despite the fact that obviously it couldn't make miracles, it works pretty well! Look at this post  - and the following one.

I'd like to make a test using the clip for this shot: someone could provide it?

Sure think! Here you are:

contrast doesn't seem bad to me, but this grain plate definitely *seems* to improve perceived details... isn't true? Ah, how easy is to fool the brain...

Yep, grain plate 2 looks good! Black levels/contrast look very healthy.

There should definitely NOT be more contrast since we'd get black crush.

time to go to sleep now... 2:15 am here!

Yeah, I agree with Doombot, this clip looks great with grain plate 2. Can we also see this with grain plate 1 though so we can compare how the grain looks in motion to grain plate 2?

test clip 3 with grain 1: http://www.sendspace.com/file/msny52

As the grain size was really similar to grain 2, to show something different I decided to create a grain 2.5 with a grain size that is a bit bigger... take a look at this, and let me know what do you think.

That's way too much grain. I don't like it.

I think the finer or smaller grain is better in this case. I still like grain plate 2

As this is the pre-project test phase, anything should be tested, and anyone has right to say his opinion.

Said so, I agree, I think the best compromise is with grain 2.

Any other opinions?

Do you have a 70mm grain plate to try?

Author

Nope... but I think it will have a so fine texture to render it no discernable...

Yes, definitely I'll use grain 2! I'm waiting to gather the necessary files to start to work; it will be a movie only project, though, until someone could provide the extras found on KinoWelt DVD; I also thought to release the movie on one disc, and extras (when found) in a second one.

You don't want to add the audio commentary and the special features from the LaserDisc edition???

The audio commentary will be added, as the PCM soundtrack, and maybe the AC3 one as well.

I WANT to include extras from laserdisc, but I hate the idea to spend a lot of time on a project, discovering after it's finished there are better sources around... I mean, laserdisc is good, but often DVD is better... this is why I'd like to release a movie only project first - as I have all the sources needed - and add an extra disc later - because *maybe* the KinoWelt DVD extras are the same of the laserdisc, probably with better quality... got the point?

That's awesome.

So are you gonna purchase the KinoWelt DVD in order to compare the special features?

Don't know where to find out it... if someone will provide just the extras, then I could compare them...

Color grading issue... I found that the BD and the DVD have completely different color gradings, but... which is "right"? I'm aware that the BD seems more natural; but Twohy used some warm grading in his movies (Pitch Black, Riddick) and I feel that the BD has too "cold" colors, while DVD has too "warm" ones... maybe a balance between them is the grading to use for the final project.

What do you think?

From top to bottom:

  • untouched BD;
  • corrected BD;
  • 50% mix between ColourMatch'ed BD using DVD as color reference, and the corrected BD;
  • DVD.

this time the BD is warmer and DVD is cooler; following the "SnowWhite rule", I should choose the mix here!

this reminds me "Jurassic Park"... following what most people think about JP 3D, that it has the "right" color grading, then the DVD has almost the same one, so I should go for it...

Still continue to think that the mix has the best overall grading, not too cold nor too warm. But of course opinions are needed, as I'd like to start to work on this ASAP.

I'm no expert when it comes to this type of thing but have learnt a lot from these boards regarding colour timing so i'll chime in with my 2c anyway but please don't take my words as gospel

looking at the shots of Warlock Sheen walking in what appears to be a warehouse (haven't seen this for a while in all honesty)

It certainly looks like the BD has a teal push to it as it looks too blue, this is eveident a few more caps provided as well. the DVD looks too pink though so i'd go with the 50% mix between ColourMatch'ed BD using DVD as color reference, and the corrected BD;

Would you be able to upload a sample video clip (15 seconds corrected BD & 15 seconds 50% mix) ?

Thanks for your opinion; I agree with you.

50  50  looks pretty good , as long as you don't run into to many problems like in the first pic with the snow scene.

Yes, those colored spots are problematic on that picture.
