Could someone compare the 122 min digital download version with the 116 min dvd/bluray version?

What I’d like to know is if anyone has downloaded/purchased this obscure version?

I just watched it, as far as I can tell, it’s the Donner cut with some extra scenes dropped in and a partly (?) new-ish sound mix. I noticed:

-A short extension of the Lex/Jor-el fortress scene with some stuff I’ve never seen.
-the full East Houston “you only smell strong etc.” from the theatrical Lester version, (but when Zod levitates the guy with the rifle, the beam effect isn’t there.)
-the kid on the horse getting killed by Non from the TV version (the kid has a different voice, no longer has that accent)
-the cooking-souffle’-with-heat vision scene from the TV version

Weird!

If this is available for purchase (not just an encrypted file that an only be watched on Hulu) I may snatch this up. Especially if its on HD.

I knew it!! I knew this existed!!!

On the 2006 DVD set, there’s a few sections from the TV cut which have completely different sound mixes to the ACTUAL Restored International Cut. This includes the soufflé scene and the Non killing Boy scene.

What’s this new Jor-El stuff? Is it Lex and him actually talking to each other like in the script/theatrical version?

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

I wonder how much of the RIC can be upgraded with the materials we have, keeping in mind that some of the footage common to the Donner Cut and the RIC is processed differently between the two (something I learned during a previous attempt many years ago).

I’d say a fair amount of it, picture wise anyway. Some stuff obviously has never made it to widescreen release, but a 4:3 composite of official sources mixed with VHS stuff would be a welcomed upgrade. All the deleted scenes on the bluray plus these new scenes is the bulk of it. There’s some alternate angles and a load of padding that would have to be from VHS/ RIC DVD. The audio would be the tricky bit. Scenes set to different music, and alternate line readings that are only available on the VHS. Without the original sources to go from, we would be stuck with the bitrate of the DVD of the RIC.

How hard would I have to hunt to get the right BD(s) of Superman 2 and Superman 2 RDC, to have the necessary footage? I’ve got the R1 somewhere but that’s obviously not going to be suitable anymore.

Well, Booshman did manage to sort of reconstruct the extended breakup scene from the TV cut, and reconstruct it pretty well. Somebody also managed to do the TV version of Lex’s Fortress of Solitude scene, and also the extended version of the Metropolis battle. It’s possible, if not very difficult, to composite the missing bits of the TV footage with the widescreen bits from the 2006 DVD and so on.

Well, I figured if I could dig up the proper BD sources, I could create an abbreviated version with the HD material I had, then downgrade that to SD and cut it together with the RIC to create a complete version that still looks superior to the existing version…

(For what it’s worth, I’ve rebuilt about a quarter of CardCaptors and the first 8 eps of Robotech - it might be out of my reach but it might not. I guess it’s like trying to pull a Harmy in reverse.)

A fan edit I made many years ago has the RIC/tv edit audio overlayed with the better quality video (muted) wherever possible. Not sure what Thau was thinking, but the line readings were simply better almost EVERY time in that version than the version released officially.

I’m about 20 minutes into this broadcast. Ugh, I forgot just how bad the “special” effects are in this thing. Say what you will about the cheap production under Lester’s direction, but at least those effects didn’t look like something done in AE by a 12 year old lol.

Some creative license taken for shots that were pretty much impossible to use, but the closest I could get with the footage available. A widescreen version of the RIC would be a lot of work and some stuff is just not going to be possible to recreate. A 4:3 version with available footage replaced in the best quality would be much more feasible.

Anyone check to see if Superman is extended beyond the 2000 Special Edition?

Also, was SIII Extended ever released on DVD? Thank you.

The Extended version of 3 has never seen an official release. Just VHS rips and composites of VHS rips and official material.

What do you mean by the “right” BDs? Are there different BD releases of 2? I picked up the UK anthology set years ago simply because it was cheap.

EDIT: I’m pretty sure that the DC in the anthology set doesn’t differ from the first release (if that’s what you mean).

I don’t know if there are multiple releases or not, but that it’s not uncommon for there to be multiple releases of a film on a particular video format, ex-rental versions with bonus features stripped out, reissues with different or more/fewer bonus features, etc., and since it had been out on BD for a while, figured there might have been a “silent reissue” or so which differed from the original.

^ That’s certainly the situation in general. I was curious as to whether you knew something that I didn’t about 2. (As far as I know, the releases don’t differ.)

Nah, I don’t know anything. 😕 I’m just used to stuff being complicated by multiple releases.

A couple friends have tentacles out for the BDs of Superman II and Superman II RDC. I’ll see what I can do.

If I am able to do it, I will do it in two forms:

  • A full length cut, at 720x540, using as much restored footage as possible (cropped to 4:3).
  • A shorter cut, at 1280x540 (possibly also at a higher resolution), with only the restored footage.

No guarantees.

I might be able to save you a job. I’ve imported the RIC into Premiere and have been laying over all the BD footage where available. I’m almost done, I’m up to the end scene with Superman about to crush Zod’s hand. Once finished I’m going to go through and write a complete list of all unavailable footage and alternate takes. There isn’t that much missing that’s good. Lots of filler like the guy dicking around with his camera at Niagara, and the weird people watching TV around the world. Some shots I think could be composited from available footage in the manner I did with breakup scene, adding in RIC footage with that from the bluray. I’ll update when I have the list together, but I don’t mind putting together the 2 versions you mentioned, as I have all of the footage there ripped and ready to go.

LOL, I’m always beaten to the punch 😉

Eh, it’s still good practice.
