If I pull back on Blue in the mid range it is a bit better but it’s a small touch not like Having to remove fluroescent colored Pink and Yellow desert!

😃

I do all shots manually

Thanks I am working on the extended sequence of entering the stargate right now, the problem I am having is the music the wormhole sequence is a straight swap but getting the rest of the extra footage to work is quite difficult but I am close to cracking the puzzle. It’s possibly the section with the most deleted footage and will probably be the most different from how the original film plays out. I have spent a lot of time spread over 4 days trying to make it work. And I have something that is working 80% but the music and soundmix will need to be rebuilt to work much better.

Interesting that although Stargate’s soundtrack has been released in standard and deluxe editions I can’t seem to find the soundtrack for the probe being sent through the stargate? I have a feeling this track is unreleased? If you can tell me where to find it I would most appreciate it.

The amount of extra footage for this bit is over a minute long but it’s off set with cuts to footage from the original that are meant to go where the probe goes through the gate and when the stargate first opens.

hopefully I will crack it this week.

No chance for just an Extended Edition which would essentially be the longest running time cut without the unneeded George Lucas-esque tinkering?
Guess not.

Guess not.

It won’t be possible to do this edit without some tinkering. I will not be adding any dinosaurs or anything like that. If I do something it will not be in bad taste. That wormhole animation is basically the same thing.

How do I extend the footage using the deleted scenes of the gate opening for the second time without doing some tinkering?

It just won’t work without it… I am going to go for updating some special effects mattes I won’the be touching anything else. I want to have fun and learn something in the process.

I think the animation is a nice update and it is not radically different. Extending the footage is very radical and requires a lot of tinkering and far more work.

Should I add the staff weapon effects missing in the special edition?

Is that tinkering because they put the footage in without bothering to finish the effects?

There’s also a big effect missing for Caveman Ra’s abduction

I got the music sussed for extending entering the gate now but the sound effects need work. I will post a version soon and I think I discovered a music cue in the process. But I have also had to make it work…

Finishing effects as long as it looks similar to the current Blu-ray disc, in terms of quality negating resolution, is fine to me. Guess I’d consider it sorta similar to BLADE RUNNER: The Final Cut and STAR TREK: The Motion Picture - The Director’s Edition.

Well Ra being abducted would be restoring original missing effects.

The staff weapons is just putting the beams and putting a yellow glow on the air canons under the sand from special edition.

The space shots at the end will be updated the planet and ship explosion will be updated but will be exactly the same sort of…

That is kind of it more or less visually the rest requires more audio editing to make scenes or extensions / deleted footage work. I am not a visual effects artist but I will try to do simple stuff. The hard part is getting a load of deleted footage working and getting the continuity correct.

I wanted to give an update on some progress and decisions and discoveries.

I have taken a break from the “entering the stargate section” as It was giving me a headache so I started looking at other parts in more detail.

Subtitles will be Verdana bold - seems to be a good match for the original subtitles that were used on first release. They are also quite small in size and will be embeded (burnt in)

I took a look at the part where Daniel has to execute his friends Daniel turns shoots at the Aliens instead and they escape with the help of the slaves on Mastages. This part was fairly easy to extend the footage and edit it better whilst also making a few discoveries one in particular quite large.

first off in this part some shots when swapped out have sound mix already done for them so this means I put those in the right place and it was edited late in production and the sound mix not altered. There is possibly a different music cue for this part but it’s too difficult to alter this or at least if there is more music it’s not been released and I don’t have it.

Secondly there is a shot that is absent from the special edition that is in the theatrical version of Ra standing up. This is not mentioned on sites like movie censorship.

This is now the big discovery - once again I had a lot more footage than there is music to match with and with the left over shots I then realised what it was for. There is 2 shots of Daniel and O’neil on the Mastage as they escape. These 2 shots were for the Mastage with passengers being chased by a death glider. So there was another scene after the special edition set at sunset where a Death glider gives chase and they are heading into a sandstorm. This is where the footage of the Death glider exploding goes as it is shot by the Staff weapon from the back of the mastage. They then gallop into the cover of a sandstorm. Now when we look at the footage of the Death gliders attacking Nagada there is a number of shots of death gliders at sunset with the pilots shouting whilst in a mist of sand. These shots were probably meant for this part. They would be shouting I imagine when translated (absent in the movie) “you can’t hide, we’ll get you when the storm is over” or words to that effect. This then leads on to dusk where the pilots are returning and are punished by RA.

^ This however is a bit of a rabbit hole and is probably impossible to pull off. But I would like to confirm the existence of the chase through the desert scene at sunset and hope one day we will get to see it. Also bear in mind it was not a massive scene it was fairly brief like 1 minute to 1 minute and 30 seconds. I don’t have all the shots to make it convincing I don’t think.

Also of note is the shot of the pyramid ship at dusk was meant for this part for the gliders returning as the Bay doors are open for the gliders to fly in. The shots of the Gliders taking off were made repeatable and on the secrets of Stargate CD there is a version that has 4 gliders leaving the pyramid so I also imagine that four gliders were launched.
Just thinking some more about the actual last shot in the special edition the Horus Guard sort of stares in disbelief as they escape perhaps that was at the sight of the impending sandstorm. If I can make it work I will but it’s a big stretch…

Hope fans of the film find these discoveries interesting.

Got the start done… If and that is a big if I put Ra’s abduction in the start it will come before the credits. Otherwise I hope to expand the section where the story is told later in the cave.

Basically this will give you an idea of what to expect. This is really the best I can practically muster. I think it’s watchable anyway and looks a bit better in some ways. Thanks Andrea yes made it warmer.

Comparison

Here is a change list.

Added static Starfield under first opening credits on Black screen.
Used Extended frames of Ra Helmet from Theatrical cut and audio edited sound to finish cue.
Re-arranged shots in the right order at the start and done audio edit.
Added old car horn sound and a camel grunt.
Added extra shot of Stargate being lifted and fixed tear in the footage digitally.
Added extended zoom in on Anubis fossil
Added Subtitles
Color Correction

What I am noticing as a trend although there are parts that will be extended a lot of footage is falling in to alternate takes and then it may either make a shot redundant or have to move to another spot.

Anyway hope you enjoy. Any feedback comments or suggestions of improvement that is simple could be beneficial. I am learning so anyway there you go this is my best shot. Ignore the repeated frame somehow a shift on the timeline occurred that has ben fixed.

I liked it! Can’t remember the original version exactly - I watched it few years ago - but your version worked very well, as it’s seamless (apart the repeated frame that was fixed as you wrote); that’s a bit like the best CGI effect, when you can’t say if/when it was used - it means it works!

Some notes:

colors: I like them!
subtitles: I like them out of the picture - probably I’m one of the few, though… don’t know if you plan to hardcode them, but I’ll go soft.
problem: the first shot after the credit (the car) is affected by deinterlacing artefacts.
hint: I’d stretch horizontally the first credits - the one you used with starfield as background - to resamble better the following credits font size and aspect ratio.

Thanks… I will check the settings on the opending as it seems perhaps I might have forgot to change the size.

De-interlacing is from original source so they mixed the US version into the French version. I will de-interlace.

It’s tough going trying to get everything right or as right as possible. So many things to think of.

You know the guy with the blown out hat…? Is there any way to fix the blown out highlights on his hat?.. near the double frame mistake… back from that. It should look like the following shot but I had replacement footage for that one and I don’the the other.

I know that for each project (and one complex like yours in particular) there are so many thing you have to check/tweak/test etc. - but it improves with time and experience, usually… 😄

Clipped white: I’ve seen it, but, as there are “nothing” to recover there, the only solutions I can think of are

  1. find another source (even with lower quality/resolution) and replace the blown highlights parts with it (using a mask)
  2. if there are no other sources, you may prepare a lower contrast/brightness version, and again replace blown highlights with is using a mask - so you will not get “blinding whites”! 😉

I have another source but it is also blown so not sure it is worth the effort…it is like that in the film…

I doubt it is fixable that shot but it does annoy me that there is obviously loads of material for this film and MGM have the lot and when certain episodes of the TV series ran over budget they would pull in deleted shots from the feature film.

Basically there is a version that looks perfectly normal and is different and it’s with MGM and not being shared in full or partially even in bonus content.

The promo reel documentaries
and all the deleted scenes showing up in the TV series proves this.

I found another shot yesterday in series 2 for chevron 2 stargate sequence first activation

I will do my best with this but that deleted scene is I think an alternate take again so it’s quite fascinating anyway…

Mothership Arrival.

https://vimeo.com/227793506

I won’t write a change list. Hope you enjoy it 😃 That is 2 sections complete with others in rough form so not doing to badly on this as there are only certain sections that have edits.

comparison

Point out any mistakes but I don’t think there are any on this one or atleast I hope not. Was quite a bit of fun and it was one of the most important sections to make it a bit better I feel I have done that mush.

So parts left to complete

Giza 1928 (Done)
Stargate first activation (75% done)
Stargate second activation and abydos arrival (60% done)
Sandstorm and Pyramid spaceship arrival (90% done)
2nd Battle at Pyramid and meeting Ra (70& done)
Attack on Nagada (Not Started)
Procession and escape (70& done)
Final Battle (10%)
Ra’s Demise (Not Started)

I like the colors!

I’d add a grain plate or something to hide the wound shot - which is clearly perceived as upscaled, while, for example, the shot shot (pun intended!) is so fast that passes unnoticed.

Also, is it me, or, after the ship arrival, there are some shots present in the original, and missing in your version?

It would be nice to have a left/right (or top/bottom) comparison clip - using black for missing shots; so, we can have a more clear idea of the before/after.

Cheers Andrea,

Yeah I am trying to recreate the colors or similar from the documentary footage and match outside and inside on this scene. It’s definitely meant to have that blue / green tone as the highlights and mids really pop.

How do I add a grain plate or de-grain. I am not sure I have a program that can do this? I have video enhancer weather there is a plugin on that?

Yeah as far as cuts go. there is a a cut shot of “Every body spread out!” and then later when he get’s attacked at the end some trimming and re-timing speed. Basically he looks like he never get’s hit with the staff weapon at all and the shots don’t follow on from one another. Otherwise there is 2 extra shots of the Pyramid ship. Some reshuffling of shots in the correct order. Some extra shots added as alternates.

Like I said this was one of those parts that really needed something doing on it.

Watched it a few times myself again and noticing a few things myself. Might need to swap around two more shots near the end of the guy probing around and the preparing the weapon. I think he might look up after the other guy get’s hit?

Also a little bit out of synch so more speed changes.

Comparison Pics from documentary.

^ This shot above is actually a deleted scene so I will have to try and add this one. I totally missed that so glad I did these pictures!

The other thing Is I will have to try to decrease the Bloom on the light sources.

It’s easier if you send me the shot (the original, untouched one) and I’ll apply various grain plates, so you can choose from them.

Happy you have found more footage to insert! 😄

Andrea I really appreciate that offer but… I just made it more like the documentary footage and it’s a bit brighter than those pics but it’s fairly accurate to those pictures which means I think I can get sway with it a bit better.

That shot has been rotated zoomed flipped and cropped and color corrected to be used…

But there will come a time I know I am going to be stumped so please If you give me some help I would only want help when absolutely necessary like totally stumped. I know I will need your help at some point I just don’t want to have to ask you to do anything unless it’s a real deal breaker.

Honestly I appreciate the offer though… But I think It was too bright so I have eliminated the bloom now that footage match much better.

I might re-up it with the deleted scene I just found re-inserted. make an assessment then if it really irks you then no problem but I think the footage was too bright.

No more re-arrangement on this scene.

It sounds like this idea might be beyond the scope of this project, and you very well may no longer be working on it, but I’ve been a long time fan of the TV Series and actually saw the movie after I had started watching the show. One of the things that bothered me was how when Ra is destroyed that you can basically see the “little green man” alien inside Ra’s body. I realize that it was the TV Show that decided to change it to the parasitic Goa’uld “worms” but I think it works better and is more believable than the “martian” style aliens from the feature film. How would you feel about editing the film to be more cohesive with the television series? Perhaps footage from the show could be re-purposed for that scene?

The problem is I run out of time to work on stuff or i get distracted by other stuff.

But yeah i have not given up on it. It has proven to be a bit trickier than i thought and although there is deleted material what you tend to find is simply a lot of the 65 or so deleted shots much ends up being alternative footage rather than adding much in the way of extra time you end up with a slight extension but more content within the same amount of time. And it also changes things on a few occasions with the music hitting better on different shots and an un jumbling of events.

I had fiddled about with putting cheyenne mountain rather than creek mountain but found it quite hard to make it work at the present.

I think in terms of alien RA vs Parasite RA i think the grey alien type look of RA is something pretty impossible to change but i think i actually prefer grey alien over the paradite (copy of alien franchise)

I have some good ideas but weather I can make them work is another matter… But yeah i am still excited to get on with it when i get the chance.

EDIT

Sorry, accidental post.

“The Anarchists are right in everything; in the negation of the existing order and in the assertion that, without Authority there could not be worse violence than that of Authority under existing conditions. They are mistaken only in thinking that anarchy can be instituted by a violent revolution… There can be only one permanent revolution — a moral one: the regeneration of the inner man. How is this revolution to take place? Nobody knows how it will take place in humanity, but every man feels it clearly in himself. And yet in our world everybody thinks of changing humanity, and nobody thinks of changing himself.”
