As some of you may have read  on starwars.com Lucasfilm will release yet another repackaging of the "special editions" before the release of The Force Awakens. The press release specifically states it contains previously released material with no mention of the originals. Please express your outrage (again)!

As a life long fan I have been kick in the teeth so much by LF  I do't even care anymore.  Unless the are the restored originals I will never buy these films again. I also will not be buying any Disney sh!t.

looking for HDTV of the  Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.  Also HDTV of The Lord of the Rings trilogy

I think it's yet another sign that we're not likely to get the OOT any time soon. But I don't think I'm much more pessimistic than I was yesterday. The steelbook things are (somewhat) limited edition. For any film, aren't they just a weird release for people who want to spend more money on a case for some reason?

The Complete Saga is just getting new box artwork. So they're definitely trying to rev up sales of their last blu-rays. But it's still not quite as completely hopeless (in the long run) as when/if they release a new set with different discs/extras/transfers or masters that are still SE only.

Yeah. Too used to it for rage. I'll be buying a ticket to see TFA, and I'll buy that on blu-ray. So I'll be happily giving Disney money for that. But otherwise, meh.

I think it's more that it's unlikely that they're going to push a "limited edition" release of the same discs they've been selling, then turn around the next month and sell ANOTHER version of the films before December.

Besides, I'm sure they'll package them together like they did for the GOUT, and probably throw the PT in there so they get maximum money out of it.

This time they will put LD scans on a Blu-Ray instead of DVD!

Hard to tell. Steelbook cases have always seemed like a niche thing to me. Most people wouldn't care and would buy the cheaper version. But there are some people who are happier throwing more money at something.

We're judging them for asking people to 'double dip' but assuming they would be reluctant to attempt triple+ dips. One potential strategy would be to release the OOT as a set and then later release the ultramegaset, and then the ultramegasetwith7thru9, etc.

I still don't think it's necessarily likely. But trying to wring out the 2011 discs some more isn't quite as clear of a dealbreaker as actually compiling a new set without the OOT.

Triple Dip. Remember the Trilogy sets with DVD's of the current versions?

Right now I'm of the opinion that the originals will be released on blu-ray/4K for the 40th anniversary in 2017. If not then it'll never happen.

 Then again, there's always 2027!

I personally believe there will be no restoration of the theatrical versions. I think the primary focus will be to release the Star Wars Saga in 3D for the 40th anniversary. The prequels have now been converted to 3D. The original trilogy is next. I believe these conversions will be personally approved by George Lucas. I don't think Lucasfilm will want to "disrespect" the founder of the company.

I think the best we can hope for is that they will not fight the release of Star Wars Legacy through unofficial channels. They might even accept a copy for their archives, but I believe Lucasfilm will officially keep treating these versions as curiosities, but not as canon.

They release the films every 7 years, so I'll wait till 2018. These are not the discs I'm looking for, move along.

Well, none of the 35mm-sourced projects here have received a C&D letter, so let's hope that this is Disney's way of keeping this portion of its fan-base happy.

It's possible, however unlikely, that they could be planning something to coincide with Ep7's eventual release on blu-ray in the Spring. I'm not holding my breath, though.

As has been touched on already in this thread, there is the 40th Anniversary in 2017, which is already coinciding with the release of a Star Wars movie directed by someone who's slammed the SE in the past.

I think what's more likely is that the TFA box art will mimic these. Why elese would they release single discs? No one really wants to own just one Star Wars film.

At this point, I would buy that just to show demand for the OOT. And hey, it might look DVD quality at that resolution!

Honestly though, I don't give a shit about what they happen to release at this point. I am content with the state of current fan preservations, namely Team -1's work.

The one thing giving me hope for a sooner-than-later OOT announcement, prior to yesterday, was the fact that they hadn't been released individually yet. Look at what happened with the GOUT. They needed a selling point aside from them being available individually, so they threw in the existing laserdisc transfers of the unaltereds as a "bonus." Sure, that sucked big time, but LFL got away with it because a lot of people were still watching dvds on their 4:3 CRT's and didn't know better.

I figured if they wanted to do the same thing with blu-Ray they'd have to do something similar, except this time they'd have to actually remaster the unaltereds.

I was wrong.

I also will not be providing them with any money until the OOT is restored.

Thankfully though, I work at a movie theatre and will be able to see TFA for free.

I similarly stopped spending money on anything Lucasfilm-related years ago because of the OOT's continued absence.

You're lucky you can have it both ways, moviefreakedmind.

They only released the GOUT in the first place because Lucas wanted to stop the bootleg market. Maybe Disney will do the same thing down the road, or they could double down and shut down the fan preservations on the grounds of copyright infringement. Lucas deliberately sold the franchise to Disney because he knew they were draconian when it comes to copyright laws, and was just another way to suppress the bootleg market again.

If you released the originals in the first place, Lucas, there would be no bootleg market for you to worry about.

 Well that's not true.

Indeed. Our very own Anchorhead is just one counterexample.
