I wouldn't go that far, we'll probably have to wait for 35mm for that.

Wasn't there an HD scan of a 16mm print in the works?

Indeed.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

The ultimate standard for ANH, imo, will be whatever HD rip of a 35 comes out, along with the 1977 mono, stereo and surround mixes (or at least the first two with hairy_hen's 5.1 mix). :P

 Nice! I was not aware.

Does Reel1 still have duplicate frames?
Thousands of duplicates remain,
and thousands of unique frames have been removed.
It's a herky-jerky mess of judder.

There are many issues with the 8mm print.

1) We did not correct duplicate frames.

2) Color correction is hard. We don't claim that what we do will look right in all cases. The previous tests were doing an automated test, taking the colors from other sources.

Here are some of the other tests, that still need further work,

note that there are still some blown out parts, and contrast and brightness issues:

===============================================

3) There are hardly any stars in the original files either, and the brightness and contrast have not been adjusted either.

We are hoping this test spurs other people to take the Original files, and come up with their own versions, with color correction, and other fixes.

Yes.  While I understand that there is no time to do certain work, why not take advantage of what others have done? Why release with duplicate frames when someone has given you a way to handle them?  Why say that there is no GOUT sync when people are willing and able to help to achieve it?

I appreciate each and every release and do not wish to appear ungrateful. It just seems that the fact that releases have certain unavoidable problems is seen as a reason not to remedy others.

How are we supposed to use that script. There's not many comments, also, why not just run it for yourself and release it. We have no idea what it does, or how it works.

If you can do it, and save other people from the issues, we appreciate you pointing things out, but why not help others out by actually showing people, instead of just mentioning it.

I'm curious, why are there duplicate frames?  Wasn't it a frame-by-frame capture?

It was a bug in the system. It is a frame by frame capture, but I was experimenting with a new idea to have each frame save to an uncompressed .avi file instead of sequential files.

It seemed like a good idea, but I effed up the implementation, and ended up with a ton of duplicate frames.

This was really a test run during some upgrades of the 8mm setup, but then I became rather time poor and poorly, so sent that test cap off to Anctu for him to play with, as I didn't know how long it would take for me to come back to it again.

Maybe saving to BMPs and using FFMPEG to convert it to avi (I know it can do it with png and gif) would have worked better :/?

But they say hindsight's 20/20.

I normally save out as 32bit TIFFs or DPX or  straight to EXR Half, this was an experiment before I had the SSD RAID running, it was to potentially have less iops, but didn't work out.

I don't use BMP etc. as I am usually working in high bit depths with alpha channel.

Poita, how's the 35mm version going?

Approximately what time in this 8mm version does the 35mm LPP come in?

if we call the first frame 0 (zero) then the LPP segment is 37923 thru 41375

Or someone could just tell me in the standard, normal person hours:minutes format. But sure, I'll do some unnecessary math.

This would have required Darth Mallwalker to either do the arithmetic himself or open up AvsPmod (or another Avisynth IDE) to get the values.

Do you think he did the splice using timecodes or something?

It is coming along. Each print scanned is around USD$1000 worth of HDDs alone, so it is a big undertaking.

Anyway, back to Super8, I will be revisiting it soon and seeing whether a re-scan is worthwhile.

If there is a rescan of the 8mm, we hope someone will do a proper release and fix the sound and frame issues, instead of just posting random scripts and complaining about them.

Or, they could work with the Raw files already posted. We don't have anymore time or resources currently. We welcome anyone taking initiative to release their version of Star Wars.
