Holding onto the number one spot in a crowded holiday movie season for almost a month is an impressive feat these days.

Not if you’re a Star Wars movie.

Yes, but this was a venture outside the “safe” zone of an episodic SW film. There was no guarantee a movie without Luke and the gang and an unhappy ending (although a triumphant one) was going to have legs.

What about promotional materials, especially when it comes to international distribution?

I don’t recall (and neither my forum buddies) seeing anything beyond standard package (trailer+poster) even at major cinemas.
Compare to TFA or Prequels (I still have cardboard J.Fett). I’m still seeing TFA toys at shops, any R1 toys?

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

They had a big standee at my local theater. Like this:

In our flagship theatre was this:

They had the TFA stormtrooper last year. This time we also had R1 popcorn tin cans. But media marketing wasn’t that big for R1, TFA was in every channel’s news etc.

Well it was the first SW movie since the PT and it did feature the OT cast, so that’s more than understandable.

That goes without saying, doesn’t it.

Well, now it goes with saying too.

China has terrible taste in movies. They loved that Warcraft piece of garbage.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

All eight live action SW films are in the top 100 adjusted. No other franchise has that many.

RO is now #7 all time Domestic and #28 Domestic + International.

Adjusted for Inflation it is #65 Domestic.

TFA is #11 on the adjusted chart, which is pretty amazing for a 2015 movie.

“I question the wisdom of this move. At this price, what’s left to drain from this franchise? I don’t think Star Wars is another Bond-like franchise. It’s been eclipsed by movies like Avatar. I’m not convinced (Star Wars) has the cultural force it once did.”

It’s close in getting to top 20 worldwide but I don’t know… Pretty good but of course half what TFA got. 😃

So, Fast & Furious 8 passed TFA’s opening.

Not sure why.

Most of the international gross came from China. I think it was mentioned last year the previous Star Wars films never played theatrically there, (at least not the OT) so there wasn’t the recognition factor with movie goers. Big dumb car movies translate better I guess?

International opening because F&F is international bro. Really it’s all because of China - unlike TFA it opened there the same weekend as everywhere else (subtract that $190mil from China and TFA’s record would have been safe), and Vin Diesel is a mega star there whereas Star Wars isn’t that big a deal since they didn’t get the OT until years later.

JEDIT: jinx

F8 certainly doesn’t deserve the record but at least it’s a good movie.

I see our opposing views on movies is not limited to Star Wars. The first Fast and Furious movie was ok to good, and then they got stupid and more ridiculous after that.

Maybe there are some people who like well made movies and an engaging story, and there are other people who just like as much **** thrown on the screen as possible.

Maybe that’s the ADHD society we live in these days?

Maybe I’m in the minority?

Ramblings…

I’m not going to argue with either of you about it if you haven’t seen it.

All I’ll say is that last four movies have embraced the absurd entirely and purposefully. They know exactly what kind of movies they’re trying to be - dumb, fun, funny action. There’s nothing inherently wrong with enjoying that kind of movie if it’s done well (and these past few F&Fs are). Sorry if your view on movies is so limited that you can’t enjoy a movie that doesn’t take itself seriously.
