It's interesting how much further they were able to clean up the print from the initial restoration effort of the '97 special editions. The new Jabba sure does look infinitely better than the '97 version, though I'd still prefer losing him entirely, I found his presence in the trilogy more effective when he was behind the scenes right until the very end. Maybe that's just me. The extension of the detention corridor, I have no problem with. In fact, that's the kind of addition I wish Lucas would focus on, purely cosmetic. Takes nothing away from the original plot or acting. The same kind of changes were made in 97 to cloud city, to the benefit of the film in my opinion, and that's the kind of revision I can accept without complaint.

Don't be an ass Jimbo. This thread was specifically created to point people to an actual visual comparison site. Any discussion stemming from that is secondary, lighten up.

Being an ass is what Jimbo and other trolls like him do best. With that said, the new transfer looks very good, much better than the oversaturated SE version. I only wonder how Lucas knew back in 1982 he wanted Hayden Christensen to be a force ghost. I guess time and budget constraints didn't allow Lucas to time travel to the present to get him for the part.

Welcome home, Robin Hood...great post and you'll learn to ignore Jimbo quickly. It's funny the 1977 one looks better than the 1997 one to me. Granted the image is sharper, but the colors are way to dark and filtered looking. I will certainly admit the new one looks best of all being sharp, but with those awful colors fixed. Great comparison though, and if the movie is going to butchered to oblivion it might as well look good.

Thanks, for the nice welcome everyone.

Somehow the colors on the SE edition looks much warmer than the 2004 edition, which seem a bit cold and pale. Of course, it´s hard to make a comparison based on one image alone. On the other hand, the 2004 edtion seem to be the sharpest one, which of course should be expected. The best way would be to have 3 identical setup and run all three movies next to each other.

Welcome RobinHood. Great to see this stuff side by side for comparison. I have to agree with everyone else. The 2004 editions look great as far as picture goes. I'm also with Pagz on this. The detention corridor is a change that I can live with. Certainly a true improvement. Thanks for the great link.

Thanks for the site link. It's great to see them side by side. Just look at the detail level on the 2004 edition, amazing! And there isn't even any evidence that the gain has been upped. Looks great. I must say I prefer the colours of the 2004 edition best. Something raw looking about them. More realistic perhaps. Somehow 3PO looks more like he did in press stills from 1977.

The 2004 edition of ROTJ looks great. Apart from the obvious changes the film looks brand new. It's great to see so much of the detail that the cinematographer worked on back in 82/83.

Welcome, RobinHood! Thanks for the link! I started whimpering when I saw the picture quality of the 2004 release, because I know that even how good it is, it still has too much wrong with it...but I want that enhanced picture quality!

If we all stay strong, how is one of us going to edit this sweet print back into the former glory of the OT for the benefit of all?

Exactly what I was thinking Pagz. Exactly...make it beautiful and sound great and hopefully those that shar our love and with more technical know-how will fix the rest. I am looking forward to "post-9/21" releases.

btw, light saber changes Is it just me or does the 2004 version of the sabers look silly and thin. What's up with that?

Also, great name, I love Donnie Darko and have been waiting for the release of the director's cut and yet I can find it in no theater and still have not heard a release date on the DVD yet...rrrgh.
