I’ve heard good things about Guardians of the Whills. The consensus seems to be that the only thing that makes it a YA novel is it’s length and that otherwise its as adult as anything else that’s out. I’ve heard nothing about Rebel Rising one way or the other.

I’ve heard the same for Rebel Rising.

I actually listened to it awhile ago and forgot to post, but I was pleasantly surprised by Inferno Squad. Didn’t think much because it’s a video game tie in, but it’s a pretty interesting and engaging story from a little seen perspective (imperial soldier). Audiobook is pretty good too, read by the actress from the game.

I also just finished Aftermath. Call me crazy, but I didn’t really get all the hate. Thought it wasn’t bad.

I enjoyed Aftermath. The sequels were better, though - the first one was clearly rushed to get it out before TFA, so Wendig’s style comes across as even more choppy than usual, but I still didn’t have much of an issue with it.

His style was the main complaint I’ve heard, but I got used to it pretty quick. I feel like most of the one star reviews probably just read the first chapter and stopped (or didn’t read it at all).

I can see why some might not like it, but some of the vitriol just doesn’t make sense.

I didn’t mind Aftermath, but I HATED Aftermath - Life Debt.

Not enough people read the EU.

I thought Life Debt’s main story was meh, but I really liked all of the political maneuvering within the Empire. Empire’s End was excellent, IMO.

I should be done with Phasma by now, but it’s been a busy week and I’m only halfway through. knowing more about the character, I really dislike her and I’ll find it very satisfying if/when she gets an onscreen death. I’m actually really enjoying the stuff with Brendol Hux, and his inclusion is a nice bridge between the Aftermath books and the ST. There’s also more than a little of Dune DNA weaved into the story, which is a pleasant surprise. I give it a tentative thumbs up, depending on how the back half goes.

I finished Leia: Princess of Alderaan. It was ok. There were some good parts but on the whole the “young adult” tropes annoyed me and a lot of it was introspective and not a lot of action.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Damn, you read fast.

I did like that Breha Organa was a central character. Also they brought back a Phantom Menace character and he had a really cool scene I don’t want to spoil.

I find it funny that Lumpy, of all things, has been brought into the new canon.

That was the single biggest “no fucking way” moment I’ve had since the reboot.

Anyway, I finished Phasma two or three weeks ago but never actually said so in this thread. On the whole, it gets a thumbs up. I don’t have a ton of patience with the whole proud warrior race trope in general, so that whole aspect gets a little grating by the end, but there’s more than enough good stuff to balance it out. I’ve said it before, but it’s far and away the weirdest novel in the new canon thus far, which I count as an huge positive. It’s got much more of a 1960s/early 1970s sci-fi influence than I’m used to in my SW books, and it’s a welcome variation.

I’d planned to pick up the Leia book soon, but with A Certain Point of View out tomorrow I may go for that one first.

I’ve been listening to the Phasma audiobook and have been having similar thought, really like the mysterious and out there sci-fi tone of it.

I also appreciate how she didn’t make it the typical biography (which I think would be wrong for a character we’ve seen and known so little of). It’s cool how it’s looking at the character from the outside, definitely gives her a lot of mystique, which feels more appropriate for the character.

I just started it, but the first story made me want to watch Rogue One, and now I’m watching Rogue One instead of reading. I’m at the destruction of Jedha and I’m starting to become more interested in the book than the movie again, though, so I’ll probably put a pin in the film and pick the book up again in the next few minutes.

I’ve been looking forward to reading that. Might do the audiobook if you recommend.

I just read “Rebel Rising” about Jyn Erso. Not horrible, it kind of helped make some of the characterizations in R1 make sense.
The first half was much better than the second half. It wasn’t much of a YA book except for the fact that Jyn is a young adult.
Also–was Jyn supposed to be 18 in rogue one? She looked older than that.

I think she must have been older than that if Saw abandoned her at 16. Felicity Jones is in her 30s. I think the character is supposed to be mid 20s.

Based on Catalyst, I think I remember she’s supposed to be around 22 (which is still a little young I think).

IIRC, Jyn and Cassian are each supposed to be about 10 years younger than Jones and Luna are in real life. The only reason I can come up with for this is getting them to fit into the timeline as small children when the Empire rose.

I’m not sure I can go back to my Kindle, the people reading (haven’t gotten to the celebrities yet) do amazing voice work, and the atmospheric sounds/music add a lot to the experience.

I also like that’s it’s in chronological order. There are already some inconsistencies between the stories (Greedo doesn’t mention interacting with the band that the band mentions), but overall its very satisfying. Especially since everyone in the Cantina seems to agree that Han Shot Only. 😉

Did I mention I ready Catalyst? I needed something quick to read on a device for a trip. First EU I’ve read in a long, long time (I’m sure since the Zahn trilogy).

It was pretty good.

I quit Aftermath: Life Debt a few months ago because I got really fed up with it, and only recently went back and finished it. I actually kind of enjoyed what I read, so now I can say I like both the first book and this the same. They’re kind of fun, but ultimately not entirely my thing. I’ll still read the third book in due time, because now I want to see where these characters go.

I also read Heir to the Jedi, and found it excruciatingly boring and overall pretty bad. The first person thing was gimmicky and didn’t capture the feel of Luke Skywalker. The plot sucked hard as well. I did, unexpectedly really like the character of Nakari Kelen, whose fate was very disappointing, and what really pissed me off about the book. I think I actually hated it.

On a side note, I got to the end of the second chapter of Catalyst before realising I had no clue what had just happened in the book.

So what I’m really saying is that returning to The New Jedi Order was like catching up with old friends.

Not enough people read the EU.
