Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released) — Page 4

I'm putting in some time on reauthoring the original GOUT discs with the new picture/sound - an infuriating business compared with authoring from scratch, but certainly faster ;-)

a couple of notes - it seems that the cell count is different on these new streams compared with the old - with Empire (the first I'm doing) I got 53 cells in the new video compared with 54 on the GOUT disc. VobBlanker didn't seem to mind, but I was concerned with matching the chapter links so I stripped and rebuilt the stream with the original cell list. It all works just fine now.

I notice that the English subs were already included in the stream (which I was planning on including anyway, if only so the menu button would work!) Out of interest, were these repositioned for 16:9, or just a straight copy of the original?

The most irritating part of this whole thing is the limitations of possible replacements/removals/additions. I wanted to replace the FBI screens with an animated CBS-FOX logo, but that just didn't work - I blanked them instead so the disc just jumps to the main menu. CBS-FOX now comes just before the movie (in place of the Fox Home Entertainment logo).

Even worse, I'm completely redesigning the special features menu, and wanted to link to two trailers - unfortunately the existing links are to one video clip (game trailer) and one simple still menu (game info), so I can't do that (unless someone knows how to successfully replace a still menu with a video clip...)
I'll probably end up just killing the other button, so special features = one trailer. Better than before, at least!

Anyway, I'll upload my modded menus when they're done in case anyone else wants to take the same approach.
Now I'm just looking forward to actually watching these things...

Chainsaw Ash mentioned the esb theatrical 35mm audio i believe this is on the 1985-86? CAV release which was analog only.

I have the laserdisc which does not have laser rot though my companion piece to it star wars does.

I think this is also a dark jedi preservation from years back on dvd-r, except the audio was what downsampled to dolby digital 2.0 at i cannot remember what setting.

The CAV transfers were two of my faves.  Only limited by the fact that they were full frame.

Star Wars was a solid transfer and the color was pretty good and the picture sharper than the clv widescreen release.

I always wondered why the letterbox releases where so soft and grainy compared to the full frame presentations.

Another thing i wondered was the THX faces tapes in full frame on VHS never released on laserdisc a different transfer than the definitive collection or just cropped and zoomed in.

This was available on hong kong laserdisc with burned in subtitles and full screen.  I stilll suspect it to be a bootleg dubbed from the VHS tapes.

So has anyone watched these yet?

We would love to know what you think of them.

Watched a bit of empire today. This is almost real DVD quality on my 32" tube. I have seen anamorphics dvds from the 70s that dont match this image. I guess it doesn't look as good on a 52" plasma but... hey, this is a big upgrade to what I've seen before

I think they look pretty damn good on my 65" HDTV being upconverted, well good enough for now anyways.

Also wanted to let you guys know that are still following this thread that I will be rendering out the lossless avi's this weekend for encoding new versions, the only difference between this new set and the last is version 2 will have the ESB "magic tree" fix and I moved the subs up into the bottom portion of the movie for Star Wars and Return of The Jedi.

over and out

I think they look great on my 32" LCD as well.

Those who have been denigrating this project (who shall remain nameless) are really missing out. Too bad for them.

I guess these are GOUT.  My question is this:  What exactly is GOUT?

It’s Not the Years, It’s the Mileage.

Well I just ripped the 1985 ESB Theatrical stereo mix from my project years ago,but how in the hell do you sync these to the DVD,it starts out good but it drifts big time all the way to the end, does anyone know how belbecus did these? and did he already sync ESB by any chance? if not I will need to know how to do this so I can add it to the version 2 GOUT DVD's project, which are all encoded now and ready to mux and go.

OK Mielr v2's are done and burned and you will like where the layer-break is on these,it is in the same place as the retail, well at least IfoEdit shows it to be identical to the retail.

now on to the Blu projects again, finally can put this project to bed.

The scene on Dagobah when Luke is fighting Vader -  the stabilization script caused the scene to be very jerky, especially during the close-up of Luke with his saber just before and just after Vader's helmet explodes. It was probably due to the slow-motion effect in that scene. G-force just revised the script so that it's now "off" during that scene.

It was discussed here:

These really do look good from the previews-was anything or can anything be done to those awful garbage mattes?

There is probably a digital solution not that i would know how.  But if they had recomposited the original opticals in 1997 as they claimed with new digital technology those should not even be there, or they could have removed them with the same computers they painted all that nonsense cgi that was not needed. I mean it is crazy to fix stuff that does not need fixing and not fix things that could not be fixed because they ran out of time and money when originally shooting the movie.

The low quality of laserdisc and the noise in the image, dirt and scratches on the print made the mattes less visble but the lowry clean up made them stick out like a someone with a black eye.

That is one of the things you can play with your sets black level i remember reading to get them to dissapear but you should not have to undo a set that is already properly calibrated to do that, it was just lazyness on their part for leaving them in.  Yes even on non anamorphic bonus discs.  Supposedly they were much less noticeable in cinemas as you had no pause feature.

Yeah I read about adjusting your black level on the XO project site-funnily enough I never noticed them on VHS and I could pause those.....

g-force's original script included a black level adjustment:

Levels(9,1.13,255,0,255)

which should have helped lessen the visibility of the mattes.

After being away from home, it's good to be back and see some of the cool things I've missed on this board.

I just got dark_jedi's Star Wars and although there are moments that resemble a blu-ray that has had DNR slapped on it (i.e. Patton), the script that he's applied from g-force has turned the GOUT into what is clearly the best representation of the OUT we have, now that it seems the X0 will not see the light of day.  I'm still not 100% what happened there.  Superb stabilization, and thankfully the grain is somewhat more controlled.

Anyways, two questions:

1/ Am I correct in understanding that very soon (i.e. this month or so) dark_jedi is uploading a v2 of these discs, and so I should probably not get TESB and ROTJ until then?

2/ As the SW I got is NTSC I have to ask, is there a PAL version, or do these only exist in NTSC?

Cheers.

@ Mielr,

So what do you think of v2's? you happy with ESB and do you like the layer-break position on these better? also do you like the position of the subs on v2 better than v1? I like the position better,I wish I would have done that from the start.

Thanks

I didn't have a chance to sit down and watch them all the way through yet, but I did pop them in to check the new subtitles and layer-breaks. The new layer breaks are better, I think, especially on ESB and ROTJ. I think the subtitles are fine either way- both are preferable to the horrid player-generated subs on the GOUT. BTW- I neglected to mention earlier how great the various soundtracks are! I know you were attempting to add the '85 stereo mix to ESB- did that work out or is it the same stereo mix that was on V1?

I'm a bit perplexed as to what this project is, maybe I'm being a bit thick?  Is this an upscaled HD version of the GOUT?
