Star Trek - Evolution (TMP Edit) (Released)

 (Edited)

Hello gang, first post.  I created a fan edit of Star Trek TMP because of it’s too long length.  I saw the movie in the theatres back in 79 and thought that it would have been better shorter…  much shorter.  I aimed to make the movie the same length as a standard original series episode, which is about 50 minutes.  I was able to do so by making the changes listed below.  (note: I would rather people watch the edit and then look at the list)

I made this edit because this is the version I wanted to see, and mostly I believe it works.

I don’t have it shared on any site as yet, thought I would like to do so, but right now I am reading this site’s rules and attempting to find a way to post it under “Fair Use”  (ok, stop laughing)

Feel free to ask me any questions.

Peace,
James

— Changes —

  • There are many, many minor edits within the film.  I have removed pauses between sentences and even minor phrases.
  • The Klingon’s now immediately fire upon V’ger, after all they are warriors, not scientists.
  • The Klingon ships move a bit faster.
  • Shots of inside the Klingon’s ship as seen by Federation staff in the space station have been replaced because the probe would likely not be able to see inside the Klingon ship.
  • Scotty and Kirk’s arrival to Enterprise is much shorter, they just fly over from the station and dock.
  • The transporter accident scene is removed as it did not add anything to the basic storyline.
  • Shots of Enterprise have been sped up, again not so much so you’d notice.  WOW were the old shots slow.  e.g. Leaving space dock.
  • Many shots of V’ger are removed
  • Shots of V’ger are sped up, just a little.  This is so the view can see the detail, but not spend so much time on it.
  • The worm-hole sequence was removed.  It’s only value to the story was to delay the Enterprise so Spock could catch up.  How did he know where the Enterprise would be?  This leads to the next change:
  • Spock shows up before Enterprise leaves space dock.  Some minor effects work has been done to show his ship showing up while Enterprise is still in space dock.
  • The scene of Spock on Vulgan is removed, that information is given in other areas of the film.
  • The brief scene at Starfleet in San Francisco was removed, this information is given in other areas of the film.
  • Two exterior shots from ST TMP Director’s Cut: V’ger energy ball dissipating just before striking Enterprise and V’ger probe delivery to Enterprise
  • Also a Matte from Director’s cut for the Bridge Screen is used just before V’ger probe appearance
  • The scene where Spock leaves the ship and mind-melds with V’ger is removed, he states that he is able to get information from V’ger from Vulcan, the need for him to go out some part of V’ger is unnecessary.

This sounds a lot like FanFilitration's edit.

It sounds alright. There's going to be a few holes left, I think. What's the runtime?

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

The runtime is 50 minutes, 14 seconds.  This includes the end credits (which are sped up a bit)

I will see if I can find FanFilitration's edit, thanks for the heads up.

If anyone knows a good place to share this, if I am allowed to ask, then please let me know.

50?!

I thought it'd at least be a little longer than that.

Nope, just 50 minutes.   That was what I was aiming to accomplish, to make this the same as an episode.

I am looking at making a version of Generations this length as well.  I saw "Kirkless Generations" and it gets most of the way there, like Evolution there are areas where a few seconds can be trimmed from many, MANY shots.

I just checked out a lot of the notes for FanFilitration's edit, 17! pages, wow.   There were some interesting ideas and some similarities.   Though I feel that that edit was again going to be a full length film, whereas I was attempting to simply reduce this down to the length of an episode.   I didn't want to add anything and it's a shame that edit didn't get released.
