Putting together an HD Star Trek 2009/Into Darknesss hybrid edit using the blu-rays. Here’s some of what to expect

-Chronological timeline has been rearranged, we begin with Kirk watching the Enterprise under construction, then flash forward three years later to his recruitment by Pike, another three years pass after the destruction of Vulcan and we see Kirk graduate and begin serving under Pike

-Destruction of Vulcan takes place whilst Kirk, Uhura and McCoy are still at the academy (Spock, Sulu and Checkov are on the Enterprise under Pike)

-Nero is now repurposed as just a nasty war-mongoring alien with no ties to time travel or any other contrived bollocks.

-No apperance from future Spock

-Spock remains Kirk’s first officer throughout, no transfer

-Ending trimmed to omit the Enterprise malfunctioning, Kirk’s disney death, Spock yelling Khan, the Vengeance crash-landing, and Spock chasing Khan through the city. Instead Khan is simply defeated when Spock detonates the missiles and cripples the Vengeance.

Here’s a test draft I developed using the standard DVD of 2009 (I’m getting the blu-rays for my birthday)

The big problems with the films are they are both boring revenge stories and the time travel element is essential to both plot stands you have to unpick and reweave.

The action sequences are also of a similar character so if you want a 'best of' selection you are stuck with a choice of Jam or Jam.

Cumberbatch playing Khan is dumb if they had made him another member of Khan's crew fighting to secure the safe awakening of his leader I could buy that but Khan is an ethnic Sikh and his character has already been done to death.

Nero, is more of a clone of Khan/Shinzon (also a clone of Khan more than Picard) so it would make more sense to just drop his character but then you need to change the big ship to The Vengeance which would require new special effects work.

I fear an ideal combination isn't possible.

The only fusion I can see working is John Harrison being the person flying the ship that destroys Romulus and sends himself and Nero back in time.

It might be possible to have him land on Nero's ship and have that consumed by the red matter.

That way the timeline is changed but there is only one Spock.

Khan isn't in it. Kirk doesn't die/get magicked back to life. Scotty is on the ship in the beginning, no transwarp teleporting,

You get the best of both villains to work with and you can edit some of the Vengeance crash to be the effects of Shinzon (sorry Nero) firing on earth.

Pretty good so far. I do have a few suggestions.

1. Maybe fade from the Bad Robot logo to the side shot of Kirk driving down the road, then show the previous two shots afterward.

2. Just a thought, maybe add Kirk's car escapade(complete, from the deleted scenes) into the movie somewhere, just like a flashback as he considers his life. I do like the scene of him in the car, since in this timeline he's much more of a rebel.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

really like the first few minutes you posted. IMHO the transition from one logo to the next is a little off music-wise, but then again that doesn't really matter. also, the transition from nero to kirk riding his bike is a little weird sound-wise (seemed a little rough to me). But other than that, I like what I saw so far. Are you still working on this hybrid or is it a dead project now?

How is progress going on this?

I've had a few thoughts, not sure if this stuff is possible or if it's already been covered, just thinking out loud..

What if...The federation and Vulcan high command really were plotting against Romulus? We could have old spock assigned or volunteer for a dangerous one way mission to destroy to Hobus star.

- this may make Nero seem less like a raving madman.

Maybe he slingshots back in time and a secret romulan warship [the Narada] gets sucked back as well.

Spock completes his mission which wipes out Romulus. Later we find Nero in a klingon prison [deleted scenes] where we learn he was a designer of the Narada [which wont be built for quite a while]. - re-dub the Klingons in Klingon

Nero decides to escape upon learning of the destruction of his homeworld. Being familiar with the Narada, he captures it with some other renegade Romulans [fellow prisoners?] and sets course for Vulcan.

- it makes little sense that Nero would stay in a prison for 25 years if he could break out so easily.

At some point Section 31 learns of this powerful ship that easily destroys fleets of ships and even a planet [partly using technology they stole form Spock]

Marcus decides to capture and re-purpose the Narada - maybe recristen it as the USS Vengeance.

- it's a bit unlikely that they'd have the resources to build the Vengeance after the losses suffered at the battle of Vulcan.

- with Romulus and Vulcan both out of the way, Marcus makes a play for total domination by wiping out the only other super power - the Klingon Empire.

- makes a little more sense than having 2 superpowerful warships.

- get rid of the promotion / demotion nonsense. Kirk remains Pikes first officer until his death, Kirk inherits the Enterprise [maybe only as acting captain] to capture John Harrison and Spock joins as his first officer.

- John Harrison is just John Harrison. No super strengh, no magic blood. and most importantly - no scenes directly lifted form the Wrath of Khan.

Maybe Harrison learns that Marcus has the Botany Bay crew and intends to use them as an army. He tries to hide them and cripple Marcus' resources.

maybe he's been genetically engineered? a covert agent?

young Spock - did you ever in your travels encounter a man named John Harrison?

Old Spock - He is a particularly troubled Romulan.

i'd also be interested in stronger ties to the Next Generation era of movies as well as more on the origins of the Narada. if at all possible.

I completed a draft of this, but lacked a decent upload speed on my end so it's kind of sat on my computer. Appreciate the ideas and feedback on the sample I gave. I might reapproach this once my other reduxs are done.

This looks fun. I would say just edit any reference to Khan and rename him Garth. Of course a genetically altered shapeshifter would have magic blood.
