Sound question

I'm starting to get down and dirty with planning my SE2004 DVD reversion project. but I'm interested in reverting while hanging on to the sound mix. Does anyone know of a program that can import a 5.1 EX sound mix and output each sound channel as a seperate wav at all?

I have sonic foundry 5.1 encode but I'm not sure if it does it. does it require a plugin to cope with 5.1EX or is there another package people can recommend?

BeSweet will do it.

really?

um...how. I know besweet can turn AC3 into Wav, but how do you tell besweet to only turn one channel of an AC3 into a wav? yours confused

Yep. Keep in mind, however, that the AC3 file was made with a lossy codec, so you've lost some sound information. If you are going to edit the WAVs and make a new AC3 file, save it in the highest quality possible, since you'll lose more information the second time as well.

I believe Sonic Foundry will make your AC3, but you will need a plug-in and a serial number.

I'll probably use sonic foundry soft encode, or scenarists ac3 encoder, maybe even Besweet.

I've used besweet already for my current star wars DVD's but never read the doom9 guide about getting the right normalisations etc. so I know besweet works for my machine and my DVD home setup, but I'm tempted to go the soft encode 5.1 route because I'd have a better package doing it, with the right flags set etc.

Which is why I like Vegas. There's so many ways to tweak the 5.1 settings for each individual speaker. You can even pan sound effects with a joystick between all speakers. I had to turn down the volume on the rear channels, because they were the same volume as the fronts, and overpowered them. I always considered going back and bringing the rear channels back up for the space sequences to blast people out of their chairs.

@ Mebejedi,

bit of a problem with this ac3 to six waves conversion in besweet. it's coming up with downflow overmix which I assume is some kind of clipping.

I have the following set in besweet

input is an Ac3 file, output is selected as six waves. compress dynamic range is ticked, ssrc downconvert sample rate is ticked and showing 44100 which seems wrong to me.

have I set this thing right?

okay, I got it outputting now, without converting rate or compressing dynamic range, but it keeps coming up with the downflow overmix, anyone know if that's an issue?

Yeah, I'll have to second MeBe's recommendation of Vegas (it took exactly two days to get hooked after he suggested it ). You can build the surround mix nicely, and it seems to have the options to render it however you want. Plus, you CAN editi the VOBs DIRECTLY! Very cool, saves a hell of alot of time, and you can make cuts frame accurately...I'm sold.

And just to give you a little example of what Vegas (and a little Photohop) is capable of....

My new ending

Boy, do I love multitrack, non-linear editers.

As cool as that may be, I hope you're not putting it on your final DVD's.

as much as I like the sound of Vegas I don't have $600 to spare.

so with what I got I have one remaining issue.

besweet split my test 5.1 EX Ac3 file into six waves which are about 800mb each and of good volume.

when I then run it through 5.1 soft encode it's bloody quiet.

now, I scanned the center channel in soundforge as per Doom9's suggestion and it's average RMS value was -22db.

now my read of the doom 9 thread means that I apply -9 to make it -31 altogether or have I read it wrong?

*edit * since writing this I've re read this with a fresh head and it would appear that the value you use is the value of the average.

so I should have set -22 in soft encode? the more I read I think this is what I've done wrong. no wonder it's so quiet.

the only other thing seems to be that soft encode is bloody buggy. would I be better off encoding in Scenarists own AC3 encoder?

-31dbf is what you want. So setting it to -9 in Soft Encode sounds right. The reason it sounds so quiet is also explained in that thread (if you're referring to the one I think you are). Basically when the audio is transferred from the theater to the home theater, the wide range of sound can only be reproduced accurately if the whole level is brought down. You have to turn up your amp, and the result is that big explosions and such sound good while faint sound effects are still audible.

see, now I get that part of the explanation but it doesn't make sense when I explain what I'm using to test.

I demuxed the attack of the clones AC3 file from its VOB as it and TPM are the only 5.1EX DVD's I got. The demuxed wav has a good rich volume to it.

after I've then used either ac3machine or 5.1 soft encode to effectively mux it back into 5.1 AC3, the sound level has dropped dramatically which is a bit odd considering the source AC3 has so much more volume.

settings in soft encode were

512kbps AC3 DRC @ film:standard RMS value for dialogue normalisation -9db

This is not unusual. I had to crank up the volume on all tracks when I turned the stereo PCM track into a 5.1 AC3 file.

oh well I'll try that then,

I think what I will do to test it is.

mux the wavs into a new ac3, then demux that back to a new set of six wav's. I know it will degrade a bit but it will allow me to see how much the audio has dropped between the pre and post wavs.

then I can boost the pre wavs in appropriate fashion to allow for the volume drop.
