Make sure you remove those black bars used for Blu-ray compliance when you grade the final version because the black color will vary throughout the film if you don’t and it will be very distracting.

With a single pass regrade, wouldn’t the colour of the black bars be changed in the same way throughout the film? This is under the possibly flawed assumption that such a regrade is simply mapping RGB levels (or equivalent) in precisely the same way for each frame. It may well be more complex than that, and if the black level does vary, I agree with Clutchins that this would be distracting. In this case, would it be possible to add proper black bars after the regrade in order to make a Blu-ray compatible ISO like the original grindhouse?

I’m loving the improved colours seen so far in this thread!

Aye, black bars don’t change because it’s a single change to the colors. I’m trying to sweet talk some folks privately into reviewing it with the secondary hopes they will help me seed it. Hopefully this will be out soon. 😃

Are you using the TN1 ISO of Grindhouse ESB as a source or do you have access to something with less compression?

Concerning black bars, if you leave them out, won’t that leave more space for the movie, data wise?

Black bars are good for Blu-ray compliance, so if he removes them, grades the film, and inserts them back in then that would work.

I’m using the 20 gig MKV file that I THINK is GOUT synced and has a single 5.1 audio track on it.

The ESB Grindhouse was not GOUT sync’d. I still have the prores version of the ESB Grindhouse somewhere, is there a way to create a LUT from your settings, or a way I can reproduce them to make a new Encode with your color tweaks?

That does indeed sound intriguing. So I take it you’re going to GOUT-sync it while you’re at it? I’m pretty sure the necessary AviSynth scripts were posted on here.

LOL… how do folks read so much into a few questions and comments? Right now I’m trying to decide if I should just release it as is or spend a lot of time making a LUT for WillRob to re-encode his source with.

That’s easy. Release it as is for a Christmas present during the two week freeleech on the spleen AND release the other one later on.

Thanks! Is it GOUT-synced for subs?

Patience is a jedi virtue! I’m kind of proud, I was pushing 2.5 megs a second to the first round of connections.

Did you use the original MKV or the fixed ISO for this? Hoping it’s the ISO because of all of Harmy’s audio that was synced up by a member of the spleen.

Pretty sure I used the mkv version of that ISO that someone posted.

The more I think about it the less and less it makes sense. While I didn’t give him the LUT I did narrate the “ingredients” for how I got from original to my colors… but really… what Grindhouse needs is a shot by shot adjustment. And cleaning. And even though he didn’t say this to me… I’m 99.9% sure he’s busy with other things at the moment. 😃 Plus, I’m not sure recovering the extra 1% of grain detail that might have been lost with my 2nd gen encode would be worth it given the less than pristine nature of the original.

Yeah, sorry. While I could probably make the time to apply a LUT and hit render, as Dreammaster says, the result would only be about 1% better. I have been toying with the idea of applying Nevar’s Grindhouse LUT to it and rendering that out, but with Poita’s new scans I’m not even sure it’s worth the effort. Better versions of Empire are on the horizon.

Oh my God. Carrie Fisher you will always be our princess. ❤️ 😦

Yes, RIP, Miss Fisher.

Thank you, though, for this release. Had a chance to grab from the Spleen and it looks wonderful. I tried a similar 1-pass grading before, but ended up with green end credits! Glad to see how saturated and vibrant this looks in comparison to the original. Would recommend burning this with all the synced audio, including the trimmed '97 SE 5.1 audio someone created!
