Should The Off Topic Section be more moderated? — Page 3

As I already said, people should just use ignore option. It provides a sufficient level of moderation ability to each individual user. If you put someone on ignore (to you) it should be virtually the same as if the person was banned.

However, I feel that some individuals in this thread are not satisfied with that and seem to be after some personal revenge for being outwitted in some petty arguments.

As I was reading this post, I felt a great level of excitement.  I thought all sorts of things to myself.  "Is Cum going to say something I agree with?  Is he going to become a normal poster that isn't an asshole?  Will he become a likable person?  I hope so!" Then I read that last part and just groaned.  "Nope, still an asshole."  You were so close to not coming off as an asshole there, do keep trying.  You get better with every post.  It's like you are trying to stop being an asshole, but just can't help yourself from adding a note of self-superiority to everything you post. You can do it man, because let me guess, you are also the best at being humble?

A very similar behaviour was displayed in The Disregard Darth Id Pledge thread, where particular individuals were not satisfied by simply ignoring a target person, but tried to encourage others to do so too.

Hadn't seen your additions. Funny how I never encourage anyone to ignore anyone. I invited them to add their name to the list if they feel it would help an unfortunate situation.

Idiot.

Perhaps warnings when someone is deliberately not respecting the rules of a thread and so do so very repeatedly, they should be warned multiple times and get a temp and if they still won't listen: perm ban.

That is the kind of issue that makes me oppose moderation of OT.

I did once support the idea of getting rid of someone who is a bother to most of us; but we've worked pretty well - being able to ignore and shun such a person.

we have.   We have had multiple trolls and other offenders.    There is only one time in my memory when we united together and all ignored the guy until he left and it took a long while.   It doesn't usually work because we are unable to get the united front.  Meanwhile banning them would do the job much quicker.

It was the success of that campaign that made me change my mind. There is a certain point where even the biggest troll just isn't having fun anymore, even if the methods are not as quick easy, or seductive. And don't forget, the more you tighten your grip, the more star systems will slip through your fingers. (I know that doesn't make any sense in this context.)

I see too many downsides - let alone how annoying it would be, for Wook, to make the kind of subjective calls each person has in mind.

I guess you missed the part where I suggested appointing someone specifically to moderate the off topic section and then I nominated Frink.

Frink did have some good ideas for moderation. I'd nominate myself, nobody would see a ban coming.

light moderation XD (sorry to Warbler, if he still cannot watch youtube :/)

unfortunately for ignore to work, a united front is needed, that can be difficult to get.   If you don't have everyone putting the troll, all that happens is that those that do have a hard time understand what is going on in conversations.  I just think light moderation done by someone reasonable(not me),  could solve some of these problems with trolls very quickly.

I'm not just saying pretend their posts don't exist. I mean actually use the ignore list function of this forum so that their posts are blocked for you.

Increasing the level of moderation for this sub-forum is like giving someone Oxycodone for a light headache.

I don't know which is weirder, that you would vote for "yet" or that you would misspell it.

what do you mean?

and remember I said I was open to changing my definition of light moderation.

I think one thing we can agree on:  light moderation would less moderation than is done in the rest of the forum.

I did once support the idea of getting rid of someone who is a bother to most of us; but we've worked pretty well - being able to ignore and shun such a person.

I'm sorry, but it only worked once.  I don't know why when it becomes overwhelmingly obvious that someone  is troll, we can't just get rid of him.

and yes, your quote from Star Wars makes no sense here.

forcing Bingo to post? uniting all threads into this thread?   no ignoring allowed?  You consider these good ideas?

I will watch your vid when I get to a computer that can play vids.

I have done that.  All that happens is that I can not follow many of the conversations in a thread because part of it is blocked.

Again, I just don't get why when it is overwhelmingly obvious someone is a troll, we can't just get rid of him.

*sigh* I said light moderation, LIGHT.   I am not talking about giving someone Oxycontin for a light headache, I am talking about giving them aspirin.  Right now, we're giving them nothing.  Why suffer a light headache when it is so easy to take care of?

So basically, if you don't want to interact with someone then no one should be allowed to either just because it is inconvenient to you.

While I do admit that off topic should have light moderation, I don't think TV's Frink should become the moderator, because then his List of Bannable Defenses will become official, and much of the fun of off-topic will be sucked out.

So who are these trolls and how would you determine them?

For all I know, this this could be a mastermind troll thread for troll textbooks.

I believe, had you chosen to be the actual person you say you are, you would have left Warblers thread alone or put him on ignore so things could quiet down.  You chose neither of those options and you didn't do it by accident.

If you would rise above and do what you are asking others to do instead of getting rid of you I think the issue would not have come as far as it has.  I don't know you personally so I cannot say whether you're the person you say you are or not but from what I know of you here ......  you are not.

I could understand why you and others would think forcing Bingo to post would be a good idea, but the other ideas?

Having Bingo back would be bad enough for me, but being unable to put him on ignore?   I don't think I could remain here under those conditions.

Actually, I said I have not (will not) debate the thread's content within the thread itself (as he demanded). And I have not. Referencing his thread in another thread for technical reasons is something completely different. I was trying to point out that in many cases it is impossible to objectively determine what is "trolling" and what is not.

As for ignoring, I clearly stated that ignore is an option for those who do not wish to see post from certain person. I most certainly am not one of those.
