Request: a 'Serenity' movie fan edit? - ADM??

Hey ADM,

I found these forums searching for info on your Star Wars edits. Let me first say that are phenomenal and I frankly consider them the definitive versions of the films that should have been.

That being said, I am also looking for more of your releases. But I am here primarily because I would like to request, and I am sure many fans of the series would, a fan edit of the movie “Serenity”. Watching the DVD today, I understand why some scenes were deleted, to make it more main stream and shorten the running time. But as a fan I could careless if it runs long and would love to see those scenes back in. What are the odds that someone, if not yourself, would be able to make something of this nature?

Thanks for all your hard work, for the fans like me who don’t have the talent you do, it’s more appreciated than you know.

First off, thanks for the kind words. I have fun doing this stuff.

I'm not very familiar with the Firefly/Serenity universe so I probably wouldn't do it justice. I'm actually encouraging others to take up the editing hobby on films they care about. Check out this thread for a detailed how-to guide on making your own fan edit. That's the sure-fire way to get it the way you'd like to see it. It's challenging, but fun. And it certainly isn't rocket science. More like a Rubik's cube.

Thanks for the quick reply, it's much appreciated.

I understand where you are coming from, I would certainly like to get into it myself, it's a matter of time, patience and computer hardware. The whole task seems daunting, lets face it.. your edits have set the bar pretty damn high in my eyes. I will look into it though because if I ever wanted to do a fan edit for something this would be it. Firefly was my Star Trek.

Now I found your star wars stuff on the newsgroups, where else could I find other edits that you or other fans have done?

I thought about doing this, but the Deleted Scenes have alot of unfinished CG shots and worst of all are in non-anomorphic widescreen. I'm sure they will put out an extended cut in a year or so.

By the way, ADM, you should definately check out Firefly and Serenity. Anyone that enjoys the Original SW Trilogy would enjoy this series.

Non-anamorphic widescreen isn't really an issue, see the thread ADM linked to, the conversion process is simple, I'd consider editing this movie, it was one of the best of the year and I'd like to see more of it, however I'm in the UK and we don't get the dvd till late Feb, I'll get it fairly soon after release, but It will go on the end of a short list of other projects.

Apparently the R2 UK, and the identical R4 AU DVD, will feature exclusive bonus features, including some more deleted/extended scenes. If this is the case, I would probably have a go at putting together a Serenity fan edit myself. Absolutely love the show and of course the movie was awesome.

There is only once scene where I forsee this as a problem, the rest do not involve CGI.. I wouldn't put all the scenes back in but some I would like to.. the only thing that concerns me and I dont know how big a deal it is, the running times above and below the widescreen image. I dont know how to fix that.

Just understand, at this time a year ago I knew nothing about digital video. Nada. My desire to see Star Wars the way I wanted it was my sole motivator to learn what I learned. I say this in hopes of inspiring everybody to follow suit. With time and patience, anybody can pull it off.

hear hear.

Now of course you are right, everybody could be doing this, but it seems there is a vast difference between people, who want something done and the people doing it. There was this guy on the MFN forums, who started his edit of Matrix Reloaded and he was very ambitious about his project, talked and discussed his ideas a lot, and he really started his edit and came close to finsihing it even, but then adobe premiere did not work properly and failed to render his movie. And that was the last thing he ever wrote in this forum. He just gave it up. Many people don't even start, although they have ideas. I think there are few people, who are willing to put the amount of time into their project it needs to get finished. Whenever I tell someone about my "hobby" they raise their eyebrows and say: "interesting... and what do you do for a living?"

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

Well editing is something I have a passion for anyway, back in the day I would strap two vcrs together with a cd player and create music videos with movie clips and a soundtrack.
Maybe my first project will be to finish my Back To The Future music video in DVD format tha I started almost 20 years ago..

The problem I am running into is that most deleted scenes I find arent in good shape, never finished and are poor quality. The advantage of the Star Wars prequels is they actually finished those deleted scenes for the DVD's. What do you reccomend in that situation?

Seriously try editing. Using ADM's fabulous guide, I was able to start making an edit of a film. It's fun and you develop new tricks as you go along. Only problem is, I'm developing the George Lucas syndrome. I can't stop tweaking!

That's what I love most. I relish tweaking GL's horrendous special editions to no end. Like shooting fish in a barrel. Sure I've done a bunch of other films, but Star Wars was the catalyst.

Meanwhile, all I really want is an untweaked O-OT so I can always go back to the real thing. The genuine canon. The films that changed Hollywood forever. May X0 come to us all soon.

I liked how you altered the voices of the droids, etc in Episode three to make them sound less silly and intimidating. Would you consider going back and doing so with Episode one? Just now watching it again I realize how disctracting the droids and the nemoidians voices are.

Maybe when I re-do it for HD in a few years. The droids voices were far worse in Ep III than Ep I in my personal opinion. More importantly, they changed without explanation. I felt like Neo when I first heard them, saying "Huh. Upgrades."

Well the droids I can understand, but the ones in Ep. One were bad also and you didn't touch them so it was just an idea.. far worse for me is the nemoidians voices, and I noticed you changed one of their voices in Ep. III also.

Also, this bugged me even the first time I watched Ep. One, when Watto throws the 'chance cube', I was always bothered by the fact that Qui-Gon interferred with it by using the force. Shouldn't fate be deciding and not using a Jedi 'trick' or power?

Hey,

On the "Serenity" subject...

A Bonus DVD of promo footage from "Serenity" was included with the Battlestar Galactica (The UK version) Box Set when it was released in the USA last year. Some of you may want to include that with any fan edits you may put out.

Damn, I missed that when it came out. Now I want it...

A good site for details of retailer's special bonus dvds is DVD Fanboy.

I did a quick one. Not as seamless as something ADM would do, but it incorporates all of the deleted/extended scenes, including the few that are on the 2-Disc set that the US didn't get.

Ugh, there's a two disc set I have to buy now? What reigon?

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

region 2 and 4.

klokwerk what are the extended scenes from disc 2 like are they worth getting the set for, the only reason I'd be getting it is to have the maximum amount of scenes to play with.

I'm actually curious to see this as I was debating to put one together after my gf & I finish watching the TV series.

btw, did anyone ever find a good replacement cover for the Serenity movie? I've been debating to cut my own but I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple posted here in the past.

My quick hackjob (basically just so I knew where the scenes fit) was deleted from my hard drive before I'd even output it to MPG. Sorry.

I gave up on putting an edit together, but Max_Rebo has said he'll eventually get 'round to it. If you look for my thread on Serenity you'll find a list of scenes on the 2nd disc.

I got the impression that Qui-Gon knew Watto was using a 'fixed' cube...and he used to force to prevent him from cheating.
