Searching ...

Sometimes, when someone writes something, someone else wonders if that first someone has gone into some more detail, somewhere else, at some earlier or later time (... to some up the matter).

It would be nice to have an internal search whereby results also could be listed for unique entries by specified posters (with context & highlighted search words). Other forums have such convenient searching. For those that don't, I've tried external search engines (here and elsewhere) with limited success -- the best in a remaining poor situation.

If there are foreseen security concerns, internal searching could be visible to members but not guests.

For security concerns from external search engine inquiries, returned text with members names and close spellings (due to typos or abbreviations) could be replaced by random posting numbers. For example, member Spaced Ranger returned as Poster3208 in the 1st reference, Poster0981 in the next. Of course, situations of member George Lucas writing about non-member George Lucas would need special logged-in tags or prefixes (visible or invisible) to differentiate between identities.

Yes the ability to do a basic search of the posts topics/subjects would be great. That way I don’t have to start a new topic or scroll through 125 pages of reply’s to see if anyone has already discussed it.

ie) What to know if anyone has anything to say about the Despecialized Chapters list

Remember, short controlled bursts.

I can’t believe this was suggested a year and a half ago, and there’s still no search option. I came here tonight to search through the forum about a particular, possibly unique topic that is not likely to be found just by browsing. The forum used to have a search feature, but no more. I’ll have to go elsewhere to find answers. I hate starting a topic without first searching to see if it’s already been tackled before. Saves me a lot of time.

And it sucked and blowed simultaneously, which is why it was discontinued.

Still, it would be nice to have a new and improved version implemented.

Until such time (if ever), a make-do solution can be used. Enter the site: parameter, with your other search terms, on search-engines that support it (Google, Startpage, and such), for them to do the heavy lifting. For example:

"Spaced Ranger" vignette site:originaltrilogy.com

will search only Original Trilogy for these search terms.
