The source of that video is a recording from KIRO in Seattle, Washington. It was originally uploaded about three years ago and apparently re uploaded since then. I contacted the uploader when it was first put on youtube to see if he had a complete recording, but he said he no longer had the tape.

As for version 2 of WHIO, I will be doing the first transfer using the 1980 this week. I will also try running one of my WMAR tapes trough it to see if I can get decent quality copies of the commercials.

Also, if anyone has or knows where to obtain a copy of the WBNS-TV 10  Columbus, Ohio recording let me know as it may yield slightly better copies of the commercials

The first and second captures are complete and the quality is so good I don't think it will be necessary to do a third. Right now I'm going through frame by frame looking for any flaws that need to be fixed or frames that need to be replaced. It should be done by the end of the first week of November at the earliest.

What about the commercials? With commercials your version would be the ultimate one.

This might have been mentioned elsewhere, but pay close attention to the DETAIL/NOR/EDIT switch.

EDIT mode still uses the internal TBC, but bypasses all other digital processing; therefore, the Soft->Sharp slider has no effect.

You'll want to use EDIT mode if you plan on doing a hardcore/purist preservation. Averaging multiple captures will significantly reduce the noise anyway.

If you want to use the Soft->Sharp slider (DETAIL or NOR mode), then that's fine, as it works rather well and whatever artifacts it produces (due to frame averaging) are hard to notice.

JEDIT: You might also want to consider using a Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD recorder if the recording has any wiggly lines.

QUESTION: You're using the s-video output of the Panasonic AG-1980, right?

Thanks for the advice. I used NOR mode with the soft-sharp slider set in the middle and there are no major artifacts that I have seen so far.

As for using a DMR-ES10 in this case I don't know if it would help much as there are no wiggly lines present just going from the s-video output straight to the Hauppauge USB-Live2.

All cleanup work that can be done has been finished in virtualdub and now I'm starting to sync the French and Spanish audio tracks. But, this is where I am running into a slight problem. The Spanish track is only missing a few seconds that can be patched but the French track is missing entire segments due to the edited nature of the original broadcast. Should I patch the missing parts with the English audio or should I leave the audio track empty in those parts?

The file was saved using the Huffyuv codec and the only filter used was SpotRemover with all settings disable except for "color correction for yellowish film" to remove the slight yellow tint that the recording has.

Difficult call. I would say just put in the English track. Better that than nothing. Perhaps someone motivated enough will do a French edit using your file and splicing out the English language parts.

Oh yes - I forgot about the French edit being shorter!  I'm thinking the English audio would be better than dead silence, but yeah...an actual French edit would be the ideal method of showcasing that soundtrack.

Its just an incomplete recording with most of the missing audio being around the commercial breaks.

In my opinion...

Where some audio is missing, especially in the French broadcast, I'd prefer silence to switching to English: preserving the original broadcast, and simple to see where and how the cuts were made.

 We're talking about a *lot* of missing audio, though.  The regular version is around 90 minutes minus commercials, but the French version is only about 72 minutes long.  That's a lot of silence.

The cartoon was not cut for the French edit. The uncut animated segment contains the deleted "commercial" segment and slightly different musical cues and will be a separate feature on the disc.

Is that the reverse-audio clip that's been floating around in miserable quality? Were you able to get one better?

Only distantly related, I've wished for a long time that we could get a copy of the animated segment that includes the bits that only show on Lumpy's monitor. THAT would have been a fantastic extra on the Blu-rays.

Yes, that is the clip. I captured this copy from an unknown generation tape that is of a much higher quality than what was previously available and it does include the opening and closing animations that are shown on Lumpy's screen.
