Hep Wanted: my SOTDS edit - translation

 (Edited)

Hello all! As I inch closer and closer to finishing my edit “Shroud of the Dark Side,” I was wondering if anyone that happens to be fluent in another language would be willing to translate my English subtitle track into other language. In particular I would like to include Spanish, French and German, but any languages would be great.

If you are able to help me out in any language, please PM me and I will send you an English text file. I won’t need them for at least 2 months, and your name will appear in the credits.

Thank you so much!
TM

Unless you want subtitles in ancient Greek, I am of no help to you (ancient Greek subtitles would be awesome though, but of very little use to anyone). I know bits of several other languages, but only well enough for casual conversation. My wife knows four languages other than English, and is great at translating but she isn't too much of a Star Wars fan... doubt I could talk her into it.

I like that you are going to try to put as many languages on this as you can. I am a huge fan of foreign language subtitles. Translation can be some pretty hard work though, if anyone is willing to translate the entire movie it is no small task they are taking on. While SOTDS varies greatly from Attack of the Clones, I suppose the vast majority of dialog throughout the film is unchanged, right? In other words, if someone where to want to make this job a lot easier for themselves, they could simply cut and paste a lot of the unchanged dialog from the official Spanish/French/German/etc. subtitle track, while only having to do their own translation of the bits that you have changed. This could make what would be a huge task, into something considerably less daunting, if I am not mistaken. Just a quick estimate, how much percentage wise of the dialog in SOTDS would you say has been altered from AOTC? Obviously just about everything spoken by Anakin, and I am sure there are a lot of shortened or altered lines by others characters throughout the film.

Perhaps in addition to your English subtitle track, you could also send your translation volunteers a comprehensive list of all changed dialog and when it appears. Just a thought.

But if you are putting up sub-titles just because you can and because they are cool, why not do one in Huttese or something actually related to SW.

I know that this isn't the help you are looking for. Sorry about the mess.

Add subtitle to Watto scene (“What? What do you want?”), add Mace closeup in Dooku/Mace confrontation, fix part 15 pixelation.

Audio- restore laughing to cantina and creak of Anakin’s chair as he gets up in part 12. Part 20- remove “Darth Tyrannus.”

Well, none of the deleted scenes or the newly scripted scenes are going to be on the original subtitles. Plus there are a lot of little differences throughout. But there are a few scenes that can be lifted almost word for word from the original.

I have to say that ancient Greek subtitles would be really funny! It would probably take up too much of your time for what it’s worth, though. Maybe I should add some “Backstroke” style subs…

------------------

Anyway, I’ve located several foreign language subtitles from the original AOTC, all the main languages, so if anyone is interested, I will give them both the SOTDS subtitles and the original subtitles from AOTC, so they can simply substitute in the already translated lines when they get to them. Another option for someone fluent in a language would be to just run the SOTDS subs through a translation website and then go back through and correct them. Might be easier than having to try and think of all the vocabulary from scratch.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help out! I really appreciate it.

Well, I've done something like Backstroke with Babelfish, English -> Chinese -> English (either one should work)...

I used Traditional I think. Got some interesting stuff. "Does not have!" is a meme in my Pokemon channel comparable to "Do not want"

Ancient Greek subs would be cool for people who can read ancient Greek, or even Greek students, and simply for an addition to the variety of subs on the disc, but all my experience is translating from Greek to English, translating from English into Greek would be a bit of a different dynamic, there would be a lot of vocabulary that wouldn't have an ancient Greek counterpart.

So, since this is an SW movie, would it be blasphemous to include subtitles in the Klingon language? I think it would be cool to have SOTDS in Klingon, being as Klingon is the original language of the works of Shakespeare and all, I think it would add a certian class to SOTDS. On a more serious note, it would be cool to have it translated into Elizabethian English. On an even less serious note, it would be cool to have a subtitle track that displayed the lyrics to Monty Phython songs at opportune times.

Ah, I just remembered, I am fluent in Piglatin! Anyone interested in Piglatin subs? Okay, maybe it is time to take a few steps backwards...

As Sluggo said, sorry about the mess, TM. I hope somepeople come through with some serious languages.

If you were interested, I do have the official Greek subtitles for AOTC, but that is probably modern Greek. I'm not sure what the difference is...

My greatest thanks go to forum member “Amok” for translating my subtitles into German. I really appreciate it and I know others will as well.

If anyone is able and willing with a little free time, it would be really great to have Spanish and French subtitles as well, to round out the disc…

EDIT: Obi-Wan’s eloquent manner of speech really comes through in Backstroke-style subs (using Babelfish)

Regarding Anakin: “I hoped he does not attempt any to be stupid.”

Requesting to see Fett: “I should extremely like the present meeting this for to receive an award capture the fleeing criminal.”

Complimenting Fett: “Your clone is the unusual impression profound. You must be extremely arrogant.”

Speaking of Shakespeare and Monty Python... were you aware the Holy Grail dvd has subtitles "for people who don't like the film." They're taken from one of Shakespeare's plays but actually seem to somehow accurately paraphrase the real movie lines.

Are you sure you got that from babel fish? It doesn't sound any different from most of the dialog in Hack of the Clowns.
Is your English subtitle track for the entire film or just alien dialog?
