Rumors of soundtrack Re-Issues?

I was wondering if they are planning to re-issue the soundtracks for the whole trilogy? Years ago, they released a box set. It was an oblong shape box. Anyone remember this? I liked it. But with my sound system,it could have been better. The music did not jump out and grab me like it should have. I have Klipsch speakers with Harman Kardon & Rotel equipment. So, good recordings come to life, especially orchestra music.

With the new formats out now, I would love to see it as a DVD-Audio or SACD release. I have both formats at home and would love to listen to the score in 5.1! I just bought a disc with Jerry Goldsmith's music in the SACD format. It sounds fantastic!! I can't imagine what John Williams score would be like.

With DVD-Audio, they are backward compatible with existing DVD players. They will include a 2 CH version, as well as a 5.1 version. In most cases, they also include it in DTS.

SACD is less intising(but top notch quality). You have to be very careful! Many discs are "Hybrid", and will contain a 2 CH layer to be played on any conventional cd player. If not a "Hybrid", it can only be played on a SACD player.

So, for all the Star Wars fans here, the hope of a soundtrack re-issue in one of these formats should make sense.

If these are reissued, I would say they'd be SACDs, because LFL now has an arrangement with Sony Music, who (for obvious reasons) only support SACD.

But Sony-based companies still release non-SACD discs. So, I'm sure they'd have to also put out normal CD sets of the soundtracks. Otherwise, it's like LFL only releasing the movies on HD-DVD and not SD-DVD. The market would be too small.

Even if they are not SACD,as long as they are good quality releases,it will be nice. I posted the same question on another message board. Someone replied that double-disc sets were released recently, but I never saw them. Even if I did,I would be hesitant about buying without hearing them first.

MagnumMan, from what you said, it seems that your box is "Star Wars Trilogy - The Original Soundtrack Anthology", the 4 CD set. It was released in 1993, and IIRC it contains some original music and some re-recorded stuff, too.

The "double-disc sets" released with Special Edition in 1997 make total of 6 CDs for the old Trilogy. Most of the music was re-recorded for Special Edition - the difference is most noticeable with the first movie, since it's the oldest.

Judging from the equipment you have, you're a hardcore audio freak, so I suggest you to obtain these three 2 CD sets, to be able to compare the two releases.

I'm also a "Williams-maniac" and I have them both

But you may want to wait until the Trilogy gets released on DVD, since Lucas is gonna to release the soundtrack, too, to empty the fans' pockets from the last saved cent (or grosz).
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

Thanks!! I might look into the 2-disc sets to tide me over til new releases come out.

I would not be surprised to see hybrids released (discs with both SACD and ordinary CD layers), as this is a fairly common occurrence. The recent anniversary edition of Dark Side of the Moon comes to mind.
