Rumor has it that Lucas did not sell Star Wars for the reasons he would like you to believe

So, if this is true, every post '95 release of the OT could be called the

STAR WARS TRILOGY - Revenge of the Divorce EDITION ?

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

I really don't know about much the copyright part, but Marcia Lucas is still credited and her editing can still be seen in every version of the film.  How would multiple editions of the film allow him to dodge loyalties?  And what about the idea of the 97 SE additions being a "test" for the TPM? Is that still valid if this rumor is true?

I always had a feeling, but was reluctant to believe  Lucas was a money grubbing scumbag who cared nothing about Star Wars and only appreciated it for the money it has garnered him, but this is the last nail the coffin.

That's a little harsh.  Don't forget that Lucas is a "money grabbing scumbag" who donates more money to charitable causes than you will probably ever see in your lifetime.

I'm not sure you understand the meaning of "reputable."

I all for critising Lucas but sometimes it gets a bit mean. He did give us those 3 original films that we love. That's enough to forgive his litany of crimes in the years since.

I'm just happy he's retired, for whatever reason and we can all go back to admiring all the things he achieved in his career, instead of resenting him.  The man has been responsible for more awesome Film, TV, Literature, Videogames, Music and Magical SFX-Wizardry than any other person who every worked in cinema's history.

Sorry, something about the OP just made me want to defend Lucas. Surely something is wrong with an OT.com post when it makes you do that ;-)

Since the copyright to the movies are usually still labeled with the year of their original release, I'm calling shenanigans.

Seems far-fetched, to put it mildly.

I don't really see any sense in this. The participants in the production may be entitled to get a little fraction of the film profit. Certainly not something that would bankrupt Lucas... even if he had to pay it back with interest after lost lawsuits.

Wasn't the whole Marcia theory debunked a long time ago?

You pay royalties, not loyalties.

Not if you want to save money.

I don't remember that. But I do recall Zombie (secrethistoryofstarwars.com) have a lengthy write-up about the speculation surrounding it.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

How would multiple editions of the film not allow Marcia (and others who had a falling out with Lucas) to have her due share?  Anyone know the legalities of that?

Please tell me you're not the real Chris Bores

He sold a multimillion dollar franchise because of royalty lawsuits? I don't buy it. All franchises have lawsuits about everything all the time and selling them is not a magic solution AFAIK.

Well, I'm sure this mystery user will come forward, as we have few secrets around here. Except for a couple torrid love affairs. ;)

Seriously though, every large company has internal office water cooler scuttlebutt.

As for David Prowse not being paid, I heard him say somewhere that every year he would get a letter from Lucasfilm or Fox telling him that "Return of the Jedi has not yet made profit" and there was no money to give him.  So according to Hollywood accounting, Jedi never turned a profit and there was no money to give Prowse for royalities.

Are you now...?

I'll give a good conspiracy a hearing now and then but surely if this was an actual legal issue there would be an actual paper trail of hearings and plea meetings which would be traceable.

America is very litigious but it's not that good on celebrity or corporate confidentiality.

I'm sure a story of  a boy, a girl and a lawsuit would be making the tabloids some cash, probably the UK.

I do think George made the PT so he could imagine the look of utter approval *joke* on Marcia's face. It is a story of a man wrecking his marriage in pursuit of an Empire...or is it him trying to save his wife?

Nevermind..

Some of the weird changes to the films are so ill conceived it's tempting to think it's not just Lucas being rubbish.

He was a hero of mine as a kid I want to still believe nice things about him and the charity money is leap into the right area but in my imagination there is an old mine rigged with dynamite. If George doesn't keep screwing the films every few years the captive convent down there  with the babies in the prams will get buried alive...buried alive
