The only one that can really be considered high art is ESB and that’s not to say that SW and TFA aren’t great films but if we compare those films to some of the all time greats they won’t hold up nearly as well as ESB would. Then if we bring Rogue1 and ROTJ into the fold any kind of argument for why those are as great as ESB (or the other all time greats) would wither and die very swiftly.

I disagree. The overall writing in Empire may be better than in Star Wars, but stylistically Empire isn’t nearly as bold as its predecessor. In my opinion, the cinematography in Star Wars is unmatched by any other movie in the franchise.

I think cinematography (and style in general) only goes so far when we’re talking about all time greats. In my opinion strong writing in terms of plot and characters trumps all.

That’s why I said “in the franchise”.
If I only cared about stories and characters, I could just as well read a book. This doesn’t mean I don’t care about these things, they are just not the most important aspects of a movie to me. A simple story, like in Star Wars, told in a visually interesting way trumps a very complex story, filmed in a rather basic way.
For example, the way the fighter movements are created during the attack on the Death Star, by moving the ship in one direction and moving the background relative to that to create this complex sense of motion, is fantastic. It’s a very unique stylistic element, that sadly hasn’t been used since then. Now the spaceship movements in Empire or Jedi are much more realistic, since they were created by thinking where the ships are moving in 3D space, but they are not as visaully engaging, at least for me.

Well I believe the same to be true of franchises as well so we’ll just have to agree to disagree 😉

Of course. I don’t expect you or anyone else to exactly share my views, or to change their views based on these two posts. I was just explaining where I’m coming from when I put Star Wars over Empire.

I feel you man and I see where you’re coming from in terms of a strictly visual experience but I tend to think of these things in retrospect so that I can clearly analyze things.

Pretty much. This place is toxic. If we actually get the OUT after Celebration and keeping tabs on preservations ceases to be so important, I’m gone.

That’d be a shame and loss here - and though you are correct this place does seem toxic at times - I hope you reconsider.

Eh, if I’m being honest I’m sure I won’t stay gone, but I do think I need a break. It seems that the board is becoming more about hating most of Star Wars than liking any of it.

Don’t worry, I’m sure one of the usual suspects will be along shortly to inform you that the Disney films aren’t Star Wars films.

^ Ha! 😄
There is more Star Wars that I don’t like than do, but I don’t come here to dump on what I don’t like, but to talk about what I love. And, as annoying as the few vocal haters are, there’s no better Star Wars forum on the interwebs.

I thought having Evazan and Walrus Man was a little too much.

I very much agree.

And about the “transmissions vs. Data Tapes” debate, it make sense to me that both happened. They beamed the plans via “several transmissions” and then the crew downloaded that data onto tapes. Maybe I’m missing something (I’ve only seen R1 once), but I don’t see any problems there.

The name of the board is Original Trilogy. OT = 3 movies. That means 5/8 movies are not OT movies, which is more than half, and would constitute most.

Out of 8 movies that have been made, only 2 and half of them are any good. Eventually, there will be 15 or 20 Star Wars movies or more and they will almost all be terrible. Enjoy.

I think they’re just letting us know they paid attention and have love for Star Wars (1977) - also reminding people who may have forgotten that both instances are mentioned in it (have seen a few threads out on other boards where people say Rogue One messed up because the death star plans were transmissions - and not data tapes, and also the reverse)…

Also forgot to say try ignoring the people who bring you down, those who spin their opinion as fact, who tell you what will be ‘good’ or ‘terrible’, and try to tell you what to enjoy or not.

Yeah, those are the people I’m talking about. I thought the film handled this just fine.
I would have loved to see them running across the beach with the plans to a transmissions tower though. Seems there are other things that could have been cut so that this would have fit. Maybe not though.

It’s not “Hate everything that isn’t the OT” either.

15 or 20 movies? Well, job security for you. 😉

The guy is complaining that people on an Original Trilogy forum would criticize Star Wars movies that are not part of the original trilogy. What’s so hard to understand about that.

By all means, I hope he stays here and continues appreciating the OT like we all do, continues to enjoy the new films like a few of you do, and understands that some or most people here aren’t going to like the new abominations that Disney keeps putting out.

If he’s really looking for a forum where propaganda is the rule, and everyone loves everything Star Wars, I’m sure I could point him thataway…

Of course not. Just should be understood that not everyone is going to feel the same way as him. Get what you want out of the site, and ignore the rest. Easy enough.
