Roger Ebert has the best view on Star Wars of any critic I've read

I've enjoyed reading all of his reviews of the star wars films. He has good insight and a 'certain point of view' that you need to compass watching these fantasy, space opera films. He's a big fan of Lucas' visionary sequences, which I agree Lucas really excels in . I even agree with his assessment of The Phantom Menace. And he's truly right in saying that Attack of the clones is the worst SW film. It's the only one out of the series he gave a rotten review.

I don't always agree with him (for eg: I detest his reviews of the original hitcher film and Oliver Stone's U-turn and plenty more), but I often respect him and that is certainly the case with his SW reviews.

Sorry, this is most likely a pretty stupid thing to make a whole topic about, heh. They're worth a read though.

Didn't he originally give ANH or a horrible review? Then, when it was successful and ESB came out, ESB got a glowing review. I don't know what he thought of ROTJ, but I know a lot of fans won't give his reviews any weight because of how different his reviews were from ANH to ESB.

I like Ebert. Whether or not I agree with him, his points of view are always worth reading. Though his rants aren't quite as funny as Mark Kermode.

“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one.”

I remember that Roger's review of TPM was fairly positive (thumbs-up), and his review of AOTC was pretty scathing (thumbs-down). I think he also gave a thumbs-up to ROTS. I have a feeling Gene Siskel wouldn't have been as kind to them.

I used to have Roger and Gene's original 1983 "at the movies" reviews of ROTJ on audiotape, but it's lost. They both loved ROTJ, as a matter of fact I think that entire show was dedicated to ROTJ and the other 2 SW films. I remember they showed a clip of that ROTJ show when they reviewed the SE in 1997.
