That's funny, considering that it's his WIFE that edited the documentary.

Not true. Although Eleanor Coppola filmed the on-the-set footage and provided the narration, she had nothing to do with the finished film. Directors Fax Bahr & George Hickenlooper no doubt made the editing decisions (which were executed by Michael Greer & Jay Miracle).

Ah, my mistake. I was always under the impression that she had full control over the editing process.

Geez.

This reminds me of the "runner's commentary" on Chris Morris' My Wrongs DVD. The joke I guess is that the commentary is done by someone who had a low position in the filming, but he starts off by defining a commentary as a chance to talk about the making of a film and officially rewrite the history of how it was made ...

Over on the Hearts of Darkness thread, crazyrabbits posted a link to an auction for the AN rough cut on three 3/4 inch tapes. I thought I'd bring the topic over to this thread as it is more appropriate.

Originally posted by: crazyrabbitsI have no idea of whether this is genuine or not, but it sure seems like it. Some guy on Ebay is apparently selling the rough cut of AN on 3/4-inch Sony videocassettes.

It could be in better quality than the present workprint release.

He and I discussed the possibility of pooling our financial resources to try to snag this, but didn't know if there was more interest (and therefore more contributors) besides ourselves. We could each kick in around $40, but doubt that could get the job done so we were hoping anyone else might be willing to contribute anything.

My friend works at a professional duplication and transfer facility, and getting these to DVD would not be a problem for me. BTW, my ebay ID is sound.chaser, although I have not yet bid on the item. I did ask the seller if he's viewed the tapes can give any info on the quality of the contents, but I have yet to receive a reply.

So, any interest out there?

I was thinking of bidding myself and could probably have the transfer done as well. I live in Europe though. I'm also watching the auction right now - I don't know how high this can go potentially.

EDIT: I wondering though: as I can see, these tapes can hold 60 minutes each, which totals in three hours which is not even enough for the Redux, so I'm not sure what we can get that we don't already have...

Good point. I'm not too familiar with 3/4" tape, but could they have been recorded at half-speed and therefore hold up to 2 hours each?

What's your eBay username?

It could be recorded in Long Play, but that of course affects quality.

Well, sure, but if that's how Francis duped it for friends/colleagues, then it is what it is.

I may be interested in contributing.

I've got this on 2 DVDs. The quality is quite crap, frankly, but it's interesting to watch nonetheless. Does anybody want it?

Interesting. I bought the "Complete Dossier" today, and I was surprised at how sparse the extras were. Sure, there's a couple interesting features, but no workprint or "Hearts Of Darkness" were included. That sucks. I'd be interested in obtaining a copy of the workprint, and I have stuff from here I could trade, I guess.

What could you expect? It's very rare for a company to release a workprint of a movie. We were really lucky to even the workprint of Legend. I'm sure Hearts of Darkness is stuck in legal limbo otherwise they would have released it by now.

I'd expect that they not port over footage from an obviously crap source and decide to stick it on the disc. I'm sure they have a master copy in the Coppola archives...somewhere in there. Seriously, the quality of the deleted footage on that disc is no better than what I got from BigRob. And if you are talking about the Ultimate Edition of Legend, there's only the U.S. and international cuts on there. I don't think it was released commercially, at least, not that I remember.

Also, my Paypal check cleared. That means good news.

You've got it mixed up. The Ultimate Edition is the US cut and the workprint billed as a Director's Cut.

Anyway, yeah that is good news. I just hope the auction doesn't get too steep.

Hey there, I'm bidding on this auction, and I have access to 3/4 decks etc....I've set my maximum bid quite high, but I would certainly want to share this with everyone (I myself have downloaded quite a few torrents based on people's work from this site on myspleen). I've worked with 3/4 quite a bit, so I can tell you this, it's real time, so this is clearly not the 5 1/2 version.....I'm interested to see which version this actually is. I promise to share it with the board, so let's not get into a bidding war amongst ourselves ok?

Are you the eBay user Krugi? It's good to have another person on board for this. I can send you some money if you need it in the auction.

Yes, I'm krugj, money isn't needed (I'm at $120 and can go a bit higher if needed) as long as we don't all bid against each other! I promise to share (but I really don't want to pay more than my max bid!)

If I win, this is what I'm going to do : go from 3/4 to digital-beta (a very high grade broadcast format), then capture the digital beta into my final cut pro system @ 10bit uncompressed, (a substantial quality jump over dv). Then I will do whatever digital cleanup etc is neccessary, and output an mpeg2 directly from my uncompressed file using Mac's amazing program Compressor. I'm an editor for a living, and I love this movie, so I'd love to see what this "rough cut" is....

Sounds like a great plan, sir. What is the total recording time available for a 3/4-inch tape?

Well, if you win the auction Mr. Krugj, and are able to transfer it to DVD, I have a couple DVD_Rom feature type deals you could add to it. I won one of the original programs from 1979 on Ebay, as well as a book (I think it's called Bloombury's Movie Guide) that documents every facet of the making of the film. I can also get articles and the like together if you plan on doing an extras section.

That sounds awesome crazyrabbits- it would be nice to have an additional "dossier" version maybe - hoping I win! looking good so far....

Lost...but to $142.....damn....if I knew for sure something cool was on the tapes I would have gone higher....

Damn....

Oh well, it happens. If the content on the discs was only 60 minutes a tape, then it probably wasn't the workprint.
