Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 4

Yeah, as I’ve learned in this past month, TPM seems to be regarded as the best of the PT round these parts. But I think the general consensus on the inter webs is that ROTS is superior (an opinion I share).

Yeah, consensus on the web seems to be that not only is ROTS the best prequel, but that it’s also actually a good movie.

I think they’re all terrible, but it’s hard to rank them. I hadn’t seen them in a couple years, but decided to watch them a couple months ago.

I watched them in reverse order for some reason- I had been wondering about something that happened in the intro to ROTS, so I decided to watch it. Then it got me thinking about stuff in AOTC so I watched that, then I figured, might as well watch TPM to complete the experience.

I thought ROTS was terrible. I thought AOTC was slightly better. When it came time to watch TPM I thought, “ok, this is the one I always thought was the best prequel.”

I think I liked it less than AOTC, but it was extremely close.

So yeah… as of right now, as crazy as it sounds, I might rank the prequels:

AOTC
TPM
ROTS

I could watch them again to really figure it out… but I don’t want to punish myself like that.

For the record, I rank the rest of the movies:

  1. ANH
  2. ESB
  3. ROTJ
  4. TFA

It’s possible that TFA might overtake ROTJ for me. I’ll see once I’ve had it on blu ray for a few months.

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

Has anyone on here tried to justify why they hate ROTS more than any prequel? And no…hating on it because most people regard it as the “best” Prequel isn’t a reason. It comes off as vain attempt to be a contrarian.

The portrayals of Yoda and Palpatine. Everything involving Grievous. The lame way that Padme is handled. The excessive CGI sets. The bloated action scenes. The dialogue. I rank it higher than AOTC because the pacing is better, but the film is a goddamn dumpster fire.

Yoda was really desecrated in AOTC to be fair

Everything involving Grievous

Fair point.

The lame way that Padme is handled

Padme was misused throughout the PT but her death was inexcusable. It really shows George didn’t even ponder about how his assbackwards ideas would effect the OT

The excessive CGI sets

This is a problem with the entirety of the PT and ROTS has the best CGI effects by far. AOTC has the worst.

The bloated action scenes

Fair point.

The dialogue

Yet another thing that is seen throughout the entire PT and something that ROTS is better at…for the most part.

Yeah, but it went above and beyond in Sith. “Not if anything to say about it I have!”

See, this is one of my biggest beefs with ROTS. By that point, Lucas was at his peak as far as fucking around with stuff that was established in the OT is concerned. TPM is a very boring film with a couple of profoundly annoying characters, but it did very little to screw with the fiber of the established story.

Also, beyond OT ramifications, it’s just super weak that Padme starts the series as an ass-kicking leader of men and ends up dying instead of taking care of her kids and helping her senate buddies organize the Rebellion because she doesn’t want to live without her shitty boyfriend.

This is a problem with the entirety of the PT and ROTS has the best CGI effects by far. AOTC has the worst.

ROTS’s effects do indeed look better than AOTC’s, but what I meant was that the completely digitized environments got out of hand. That Dr. Seuss looking planet in the Jedi purge was just ridiculous.

Yet another thing that is seen throughout the entire PT and something that ROTS is better at…for the most part.

Definitely a problem that all of them have, but “No, YOU will die!” “From my point of view, the Jedi are evil!” “UNLIMITED POWER!” “Only a Sith deals in absolutes.” “Love can’t save you Padme, only my new powers can do that!” and everything out of Yoda’s mouth are all on par with “I don’t like sand”.

This is a very common phenomenon called “opinion”.

I know that whatever is say is an obvious truth, but that would be a bit ridiculous.

Can’t speak for anyone else, but A New Hope loses a lot of rewatchability after a few viewings. I agree that it’s break-neck speed on first viewing, but it just feels like it takes forever to get off Tattooine and get to the good stuff.

ESB is extremely overrated IMO. It’s extremely good mind you, just not as good as Lucas’s masterful opening and closings of his saga.

First someone ranking Star Wars on place 4, then someone ranking ROTS higher than Empire.

Have you even seen TFA or do you just disregard it because Lucas wasn’t involved?

I know no expletives in any human tongue that express my sentiments towards this post, thus I shall make up my own.

A bit late to this party, but here’s my ranking of the SW flicks on a 10pt scale:

#1 ESB - 9.9
#2 SW/ANH - 9.5
#3 TFA - 9.1
#4 ROTJ 8.4
#5 ROTS 7.7
#6 TPM 7.6
#7 AOTC 6.9

Eventually I’ll get to my review of TFA and I’ll post that in the other thread 😉

A New Hope is actually my favorite film of the bunch, but I acknowledge that Empire is a technically superior film.

Your anger and hatred is palpable. Ironically this trilogy will be talked about for hundreds of years if not longer. So when we’re all dead it’ll still be alive in the minds of the people who watch them.
