Rad - Helltrack Edition

Original Rad thread

TrailerRad (1986) Theatrical Trailer

IT’S TIME TO BREAK THE ICE!
Been a long time in the making, but it has finally arrived and Im sure it wont disappoint.

So heres a quick Q and A that may answer some initial questions.

So whats different between this DVD and the others floating around?

In short, EVERYTHING.
This DVD contains and represents what a retail DVD of this film should look/be like when/if it does get released.

Well, can you be specific as to what the differences are?

Sure.
This DVD differs from previous DVDs by incorporating the following (but not limited to).

DVD Structure:

  • Scene selection invisible hidden buttons to scroll with remote to next page of chapters without having to highlight the chapter number page manually.
  • Resume feature was incorporated when feature is stopped, so you can go back to the previously viewed point.
  • All VM DVD commands were written in by hand, and not automatically by muxing software (abstraction layer), so no unnecessary commands are present.

DVD Menu:

  • From scratch disclaimer message.
  • Included movie rating screen (e.g. “This film has been rated PG”).
  • Brand new menu design with main menu soundtrack, also includes scene selection.

DVD Video:

  • New tri-star trailer without logos has been written into script for main feature.
  • New delogo process implemented, whole feature delogo’d except for a 5 second scene.
  • PG end screen written into script at end of main feature.
  • Proper crop & IVTC.
  • CCE SP3 used, replacing the one-click HDTV2DVD software used on previous users attempts.

DVD Audio:

  • Direct stream copy of audio for main feature, audio for tri-star opening and PG ending transcoded and attached to match feature (just simple AC3 2.0  -> AC3 5.1, seeing as this just the opening trailer and the end PG message, which was just a silent track, all I did was make a fake 5.1 track to match the main feature track).

DVD Extras:

  • Complete rebuild of theatrical trailer, frame by frame, VHS was used as reference but <span style=“text-decoration: underline;”>NO</span> part of the video from the VHS was used in final product, audio from VHS was used.
  • JACKET_P folder images created.
  • Updated DVD cover art.
  • Same DVD disc art.
  • Updated NFO.

Delogo’d? So you mean there is a huge blur on the screen?

Im not going to downplay this, once there is a logo on screen, it is impossible to get rid of it 100%. With that being said I think some of you will be quite pleased with how it the final product turned out.

But heres some tips to help you viewing experience and to minimize the logo on you end (yes theres only so much I can do, you have to do some stuff too).

Have your TV calibrated, and/or run a DVE (or similar) disc beforehand. When a TVs settings are right, the logo should be <span style=“text-decoration: underline;”>barely</span> noticeable, almost gone entirely. If you have your contrast/brightness/backlight cranked to max, the delogo will become more obvious and you will have problems…so you should adjust accordingly.

The delogo only seems to have real problems on one specific type of scene. When the camera pans real fast to the left or right with close fast moving objects moving in front if it. The logo will be noticeable because of the MPEG artifacts on the source. Slight blocking will occur for a brief moment around the logo, nothing can be done about this, its on the source thus its on here.

**What were the tools/applications you used making this DVD?
**
Well, its hard to list step for step everything thats been done but heres a general breakdown.

DVD Video:

  • MPEG2CUT2
  • DGIndex
  • AVI Synth inc. filters
  • AvsP
  • CCE SP3 1.0.3 w/ CCX engine

DVD Audio:

  • Goldwave
  • BeSweet
  • Command Line

DVD Menu:

  • DVD Lab Pro
  • MS Paint
  • Adobe PS

DVD Structure

  • PGC Edit

**Where can I find the specifics about your DVD?
**
Well, there is 3 places you can check

  1. The NFO in the DVD_ROM folder
  2. OT’s Fanedit Wiki
  3. This Thread

**
Wow, sounds totally RAD, where can I get it?**

IDK where can you get it?

Asshole

😛

Gotta find it for yourself.
Ive contacted people already about this, there are already a few people who are going to get it first so that they can put it on usenet/torrents/RS/MU whatever.

**OK, sounds like it should be reasonably easy to find, is there anything I can do for you in return? or anything I can give you in return?

**There is only two things I would like in return from you kind people.

  1. Please keep all the file names/folders/files themselves in the original distributed format if you decide to post them somewhere.

  2. Please give proper credit to the contributors of this project, without their hard work and contributions, this release would not be possible.

As for anything else, we (the contributors) have not and will not accept anything in return for this project (monetary or otherwise)

Final encode is done

This will almost max out the DVD with a few MBs left over

I should have the authoring done pretty quickly, after that I will double check everything and see if anything needs to be fixed, and I will watch the entire movie on my 1080P upconvert to check for any problems

After which the people involved and the people I contacted will all get copies and then it will be available to everyone

Files will be sent today to contributors/helpers

Release date of July 31st 2010 is planned, after that most of you should be able to find it with relative ease

I got confirmation that at least one of the contributors have received all their files and viewed the final product, they were very pleased at the outcome

A side note:
This may be common knowledge but I figured I would discuss it alittle

Depending on your hardware DVD player, it may or may not be beneficial to output the DVD to 720x480i thru HDMI and let your TV do the scaling

Of course if you have an Oppo, then this probably doesnt apply to you, but if you have a cheapo upconvert DVD player or perhaps a BluRay that doesnt handle DVDs well then you might want to take a look into it, compare its 1080i/p to its 480i pass thru and see how your TV handles the scaling

On one of my older upconverts, the 480i thru HDMI to the TV looks better than the 1080, probably because its older hardware perhaps

Im glad you like it, I know it is a bit long (30 seconds) but I felt the information is important enough for me to extend it from 15 to 30 seconds, and people actually read it while not hindering their viewing pleasure.

When any of you get a chance to sit down and get some popcorn out, I would love to hear your opinions on the quality and the authoring. If you see any mistakes I made or something I overlooked, Id love to know. I think I caught everything, but never know. Also anything you might not have liked or perhaps something you did like, all criticism or praise is welcome.

A definite step up from previous release. Colors seem more vivid and what is really nice is NO MORE WATERMARK !!!

One thing I did notice though were a few glitches during 'bicycle boogie' and cant remember if those are in the 'Starkiller' version or not, so it may be source or something that occurred during encoding ... ?

30:47 - 30:57 - 31:35

Noticeable but doesn't distract from viewing. Sorta makes you think you are watching 'film' at the theater :)

All around though this turned out great and am glad I finally got to see your version.

A+ from me dude ;)

*Side note*

Got from usenet and not sure if it was just me, but did not get the two extras - DVD_ROM Content and JACKET_P Folder ... ?

1. Glitches....they are on the source and if you check EVERY source, including VHS and LD the same glitches show up on them as well, and yes they are on the SK edition........that is not something I missed, just something that is a part of the source

2. The files uploaded on usenet are the same rar files that were put up on other sites. When you extract the rars, you get a IMG, mount/burn the IMG and the JACKET_P and DVD_ROM will be in there, those files should be inside the IMG file

Very impressed with the authoring - the "invisible button" on the scene selection menus is a neat touch. Although, I think that each of the four screenshots could have done with a label to show which chapter they represent.

I was pleased with the effectiveness of the logo removal script. I would also stress the importance of viewing on a display with properly calibrated black levels - on the initial black screen between the TriStar logo and the opening titles, I could see a shadow when viewing on an overly-bright LCD, but this was not visible on a plasma that had been calibrated with DVE.

Probably just you, or the way you burned the disc. If all RARs verified against the SFV provided, then you have exactly the same data as I have; my disc does contain those folders.

Yes Moth, I agree with you, the scene selection could have used alittle more "description" or numbering to identify the chapters. This did cross my mind when putting it together, but when thinking about what I could do, I realize I couldnt really do anything without going back to the person who made the menu art since I didnt have his fonts (he can take a while so it would have been a longer wait) and if I started to add stuff it would have looked awkward. In the end I ended up using the selector bar just being visible on the page selected and concluding that was enough.

And yes, I agree with you on the logo shadow on a non calibrated display. If you have your contrast/brightness/backlight cranked high, it will be noticeable.
When all those settings are where they should be, it should be almost unnoticeable, like I said in the post above.

Edit:
Also each page starts off at the first chapter for that screen, so it should go 1, 5, 9, and 13

And the chapter scenes arent exact matches of points in the movie, instead I purposefully chose chapter scenes pictures in the menu of points that were to depict what scene that chapter was suppose to represent, what part of the movie was coming up, sometimes the pictures are only 5 seconds ahead of the chapter point, sometimes they are minutes ahead of the chapter point, but in the end rest assured, this was done on purpose

OK, I get how this is packed. I have those items. I thought the .IMG file was just the movie as that is usually what I get in them.

As for the 'glitch. Odd I never noticed it before. Like I said though, not a big deal just wanted to point it out just in case ...

The movie looks very good.  I didn't notice any flaws.  Thanks for completing this project.

Queued up, I can't wait to watch this sucker!  This is one of my all time favorites, thanks for all the hard work put into this project!

Can anyone tell me what the cmg-rad-source.ts is?  Found that part on a news search site.

Edit: Never mind.  I just checked it.  It is a source clip for comparison to the encoded sample clip.

Btw, saw this movie for the first time last night.  No really!  I can't believe I missed it all these years.

Good movie, glad there is a DVD of it.  Thanks for the work.
