I expect the mono mix will get shafted.

I actually think that there's a good chance of the mono mix being included and it would make me happy beyond words, but I won't complain as long as one of the 19777 mixes is included.

Wasn't it said in some interview with Matthew Wood or somebody that when they were doing the sound mix for the 2011 Blu-Ray, they also digitized all previous sound mixes for the film?

If this does actually happen, I just hope the original films themselves are made available as their own set or sold individually and not in another megaset where I'm forced to purchase the prequels again.

Also, If Disney is doing this, This is the company who released The Lion King on Blu-Ray with missing VFX and The Little Mermaid with swapped shots in the wrong order and straight cuts when there should have been dissolves. It seems like even if this is really happening, there's lots of room for them to screw something up.

They digitized them, but only as 192kbps wma files, because George didn't think they needed to go any higher.

They could always be digitized again now that George is out of the picture.

Sadly, the same is occuring on Reddit.

http://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/2dqm18/disney_to_release_original_unaltered_cut_of_star/

If they really wanted to make everyone happy, they would probably need to do a release that included both the remastered theatrical version and then another version of the film like something along the lines of Revisited.

But I think most people would be happy with just the originals, it would be a huge step for Disney in restoring Star Wars fans confidence in Lucasfilm and Star Wars in general.  (Assuming this is actually going to happen, which of course who knows.)

The new dumb comment du jour seems to be "well, which version is the true original anyway? Lucas has been making changes since the beginning! You can never satisfy blah blah". I can't believe how many variations on that I've read since this rumor started.

It's not that new. I got the same response from almost everyone I tried to discuss it with back at Celebration IV in 2007. Same occurred at a Clone Wars screening I attended in 2010.

I've always said that if they just release the same movies (content wise, but remastered) that were on all the pre-97 tapes, New Hope and all, people would be happy. Although I'd love to see them branch the original crawl with New Hope, I'd still be satisfied with just getting it unaltered but with the 1981 crawl since, let's be honest, that's how 99% of us were used to seeing it.

Wow, that's amazing. I mean it's not even a complete thought. The movie had a few very slight variations before '97, so....what? Do nothing? There will be chaos if they put out a great looking blu-ray that doesn't have them all? So dumb.

Not just before '97, but there were even variations between the prints circulating in '77 when it was released!

Of course we would all be perfectly happy with any pre-'97 version. Sure, I grew up with the '81 crawl and the tractor beam being coupled to the reactor in seven locations, but little things like that just aren't significant and don't detract from the movie. Everyone knows what we really want. We want the CGI garbage and SE revisionism gone!

I presume they can list all these alleged changes in detail and chronological order?

Where were you in '77?

Most of the people obsessed with pre-97 changes and the distribution rights (or Lucas stepping in and stopping it) when it comes to an OUT release usually have no idea what the hell they're talking about. It's obnoxious...

You have a source for that info?

Of course, though it wishes to remain anonymous. But don't worry: that source has been verified by an anonymous source. It's legit info.

That would be like "preserving" the Beatles' catalog as MP3's. Seriously, is there something in the water at Skywalker Ranch?

Skywalker Ranch: Something in the water since 1997.

This is right up there with the 2006 TFN comment about the OOT being released in non-anamorphic, "You are getting what you deserve!"

I think the last time the OOT was released on VHS was in 1995 (The Faces Covers?)  and NOBODY complained about them as they were a bestseller.  Nobody ever complained about the addition of Episode IV:  A New Hope in the crawl, etc.  It was the changes that started in 1997 is when the tampering began (Greedo shooting first, Jedi Rocks, Hayden Force Ghost, Vader NOOO!, etc).  We just want the last version Lucasfilm released before 1997 fully remastered!

It's real simple!!!

So did I.  ;)

Actually, in all seriousness, I have it on good authority that the original mixes have been digitally archived from the master tapes at 24-bit, 192 kHz resolution, and that copies of them are safely stored in good hands.  I'm not at liberty to say how I know this (no, I don't have them, nor could I share them if I did), but rest assured their legacy lives on . . .

Do you happen to know if this is true for any foreign language tracks as well?

Author

I haven't heard anything about that, since the conversation concerning this information was only about the three English mixes.  But I believe Lucasfilm has been digitizing many of their stored materials, so it's at least a possibility.

I just bought the remastering on DVD, and the CGI clashes so badly with the original set. In Mos Eisley the Sand troopers on Banthas contrast so horribly with the extras moving, and my girlfriend whose only see the OT once saw the CGI version of Jabba and cringed.

I will pick this up.

I wonder which special edition(s) will be available going forward. 97? 04? 11? A new edition?

I also wonder if we'll get the OPT (original prequel trilogy).

Were the English mixes restored during creation of the new Blu-ray mixes? In that case I'd have high hopes for the foreign dubs, since at least the German dub tracks (the raw voice recordings) were freshly digitized for the Blu-rays, with audio quality now pretty much on par with any modern film production - not as muffled and tinny as they sounded on every home cinema release that came before.

It would be awesome if they'd re-construct the German 1978 mix using these.

It was most likely done a few years ago, while they were working on the Blurays, but not specifically for that purpose.  It's actually frustrating for me to have to be so vague, because I know exactly who did the transfer and why, but I'd get people in trouble if I said anything more specific about it!  I may never get to hear the results myself, but the original soundtracks have definitely been preserved for posterity—that much I can say with absolute certainty.

I have no information on whether the same has been done for the foreign language dubs, but I would hope so.  If they've been digitizing their archives as I've heard, then it seems likely.  I don't think they'd go to the trouble of remixing them over again, though, unless they had a specific commercial reason to do so.

Are you referring to the original creepy Yoda puppet in Episode 1 and Natalie's nips in Episode 2?  Not sure of any changes to Episode 3.

I think it's doubtful that we'd get anything different than what was included in the 2011 blu-rays.  Maybe a 4K scan of Episode 1 for preservation purposes.
