Thanks again for the GKAR clips, Eric. I must say I am quite disappointed with the quality, it seem that GKAR Jedi is even more plagued with DVNR smearing than the GOUT, luckily most of the shots I want to use don't have so much movement, so it's still a great help :-)

I'm not done with RotJ yet, but hopefully it won't be long before I'm finished with it.  Bear in mind that it isn't a theatrical mix, more of a hybrid, but it sounds excellent and you are welcome to use it.  I just finished a 5.1 for ESB also, in case that is of interest for any of your projects.

Well, my ESB:PDE is GOUT synced as well, so I (and anyone else who has it) could use it for that :-)

I've got a bit of a dilemma. I started working on this and I just can't decide whether to change some of the stuff or not. These are all the shots from 005's list that I'm not sure about changing:

That is not to say that I'm changing all the others, there are some shots where the difference is so insignificant that I'm definitely not changing them. I'm just not sure about these yet. What do you guys think?

The compositing in the SE is generally superior, and for most of those it wouldn't really be worth changing them back just to introduce low res shots with matte lines and so forth.  I do think the placement in the original shots tends to be better, but it would be difficult to even notice the differences except in a straight comparison like this.  I like the look of the Millennium Falcon's engine glow in the original better also, but I don't know how you would go about reinstating that without changing the rest of the shot.

Colour correction--mainly eliminating the general blue cast, and dialing down oversaturated reds on Tatooine--is the most important thing.  But the '93 transfer doesn't exactly have stellar colour itself, either, so I'm not sure what it's really 'supposed' to look like.  Given the kinds of differences apparent between the GOUT and the SW Technicolor print, the film's true look is most likely something in between the extremes of each rendition.

Has anyone ever arrived at a satisfactory answer for why the old copies of Jedi have blue stars?  It's very bizarre looking.

I'd say go with the SE for all those except number 6. The SE recoloring of R2 stands out a bit too much.

My two cents (and this is me trying very hard to be accepting while still wanting to be able to call this my preferred version to watch):

1. SE
2. Original (you can see CGI tentacles below Lando)
3. SE
4. SE
5. SE
6. Original (the R2 recoloring is a well-known SE change; Ady changed it back in ESB, too.  I'd hate to see this change stay)
7. SE
8. SE
9 & 10. Original (the laser blast is a different color; I'd prefer the original, even if it's "wrong," but I guess I could go either way here)
11 & 12. SE

Note that 9 & 10 and 11 & 12 are part of the same shot (well, 9 & 10 is one shot, and 10 & 11 is another shot).

The question is, isn't the laser blast being the wrong colour in 9 a problem caused by the 1993 telecine, that wasn't present in the original prints, similarly to the yellow Tie blasts in Empire? I think it might be, because it has a distinct red outline.

Yes; I think something between the two is a good approach to take.  As long as the result looks natural and consistent, I do not think it matters greatly what the film is "supposed" to look like.

Harmy, I would go with the SE in all those shots apart from 2.  I simply cannot stand even the most fleeting glimpse of the SE Sarlac beast, even if it is in the distance.  I even do not mind the recolored R2.

I think this will be an excellent project.  Will this sync to the GOUT ROTJ audio and will you be removing the SE Bantha herd in its entirety?

Yes, you saw the PDE, so you know that's the approach I tried to take with the colours and will be maintaing that here as well.

That sounds fine then.  I personally think that the laser blast looks better on the SE, but I do not have strong feelings about it either way, so ChainSawAsh's preferences more or less mirror my own.

I am really looking forward to this now.  :-)

You're right Harmy, that green laser from the Falcon is one of the many flaws in the '93 telecine, it's not how it looked back in '83. You can check it for yourself in the older transfers and trailers that it wasn't green.

OK, I'm definitely keeping the SE shot then, as the only difference from the original is the two tiny little tie-fighters being placed behind Falcon as they should have been and that there's less garbage mates and those weren't originally visible anyway.

In that case, go with the SE on that shot.

Other than that, my suggestions remain the same.

They do indeed look really great.  Super work, Harmy! :D

I still do not like the black color Artoo has in that last scene, but I shall defer to the majority.  It is only a very brief shot after all.

Well, the way I look at it, I'm going to be using this as a companion piece to Ady's ESB reconstruction (and, I assume, his ANH reconstruction, too).  And in Ady's ESB, he returned Artoo's panels to black for the space scenes, so I vote to keep them that way for the sake of both consistency and purism.  (Is that a word?  Purism?)

Yeah, I agree with Chewtobacca that the SE shot of R2 looks better (they've done a pretty good job on this one, unlike on some in ESB) but it is a glaring SE change and this is after all a theatrical reconstruction.

That is true.  :-)

You could always make a non-purist edition, if you felt like being a glutton for punishment.

The blue R2 from the SE actually does look better, since they didn't tremendously oversaturate him as they often did in Empire, so keeping it in wouldn't really bother me, but as long as you're going to the effort of making a theatrical reconstruction, it might as well be reverted.

Those shots in the clip look impressively good.

The youtube clip looks really good. I would assume it will be tough to reinstate Luke winking at the force ghosts at the end, since that part of the shot is totally gone.

He winks?  I don't remember that.  And if it's in the GOUT footage, there's no reason it can't be restored.  If it's not, I daresay it was probably never in the film to begin with (like Luke throwing the grappling hook twice - it never happened).
