Pre-'97 VHS sound mixes?

I want to buy one or two of the various VHS widescreen/letterbox trilogy sets but I want to know which sets use which sound mixes. I know the '95 THX set uses the 1993 GOUT mix but which ones use the 1985 remix and even the 1977/80/83 mixes?

I believe the 92 set uses the 85 mixes, and I also believe that those were the first letterboxed VHS copies available in the US. I’m not 100% sure on this, however.

I’ve never gotten confirmation that the 1985 remix on Laserdisc had any unique differences in ESB and ROTJ. I know Star Wars has the C3PO line bit are there any other substantive differences in the other two movies?

This has been discussed many times elsewhere. The consensus seems to be – no, there’s no indication of there being an 85 mix for ESB and ROTJ of any sort, substantive or not. Minor differences reported from release to release are not inconsistent with the slight variation of a single mix applied over multiple releases.

Also AFAICT, there’s no content difference (i.e. different dialogue or effects) in the 93 mix of Jedi.

I know you’re probably collecting VHS tapes for some sentimental reason and there’s nothing wrong with that, but I do want to remind you that there are much, much, better ways out there to hear the 77/80/83/85/93 mixes.

I like to download the Laserdisc transfers on my computer if that’s what you mean. I already have a VCR so it’s really for convenience’s sake that I wpuld want to collect it on vhs. Thanks for the response by the way. I should’ve just dug a little deeper. Sorry for the bloat.

S’alright. I wasn’t trying to be critical regarding the number of times it’s been discussed, just saying that it’s more than just me weighing in with my opinion. Not that we can’t be collectively wrong.

So is there a 93 version of Empire that’s different from the 80 mix?

Yes. The 93 mix is missing the sound effect for the snowspeeder crash which is present in earlier mixes. So, more accurately, the 93 mix for ESB is just a flawed version of the 80 mix, but nevertheless it’s different.
