Thank you for the support.

I forgot to mention earlier, but some shots with lightsabers will have brightness/saturation adjustments to give them a white core.

I was thinking of posting a preview of part of Jabba's Palace within the next couple of days.

I'll try to get one up tonight.

A preview would be nice too.

...oh, I see what you did there.

If I had not, you would have! :-)

On a more serious note, this edit sounds promising.  I have been wanting to watch a good ROTJ edit for a while, but ROTJ edits seem thin on the ground.  Spence's did not receive encouraging reviews (and I had no great desire to see the Ewoks banished anyway); and ADM's was nice, but was not very extensive.

And regarding the ewoks, I was thinking about removing the scene where Leia meets Wicket.  This coud make the tone of the film darker since you don't know what happened to her.  It would also make her reveal later a suprise.

And more importantly, with that scene gone the first ewok you see can be the shot of a fierce warrior in the scene where Han, Luke and Co. are captured and eliminate the first impression being a teddy bear.

I think that's a good idea - of course most of us can't forget that first impression :-(

Ya know, there's this plant that when used it seems like when I watch fan edits it's like I'm watching movies for the first time and I can really enjoy them alot better.

Alright I've just exported an around 6 minute long preview.  It's kinda rough, and I'm posting it with the hopes that some people can give me constructive criticism.  It shows my edit starting with the droids approaching jabba's palace to chewie being "bought" by jabba the hutt.

Will it be for everyone or do you have an elite cadre of viewers?

It'll be for everyone, it's going on youtube.  It's uploading right now, and it's taking forever! A 6 minute video's been uploading like 45 minutes and it says 97 minutes to go!

Interesting.

I really like how quickly it moves, but it may move a little too quickly.  I think it worked without the scene of the droids being fitted with restraining bolts down in the dungeon.

I like having the idea of Chewie and Leia show up right on the heels of the droids, but it seemed a little forced to have Jabba trust 3PO to translate when he just got there himself.  Maybe if you had a subtitle of Jabba saying something like "Protocol droid!  Get up here and translate!" or something like that.  3PO replies with "Yes, I am here..."  and the scene goes on.

You may want to think about restoring some of the reaction shots of when Leia reveals the thermal detonator.  It doesn't seem to have the drama with out it.

The scenes from when the droids arrive to when Leia and Chewie arrive are very smoothly edited and flow nicely.

Good work!

Thanks.  About the Jabba subtitle, I'd just always assumed that was what he said.  I guess I could add it for clarity, but I just always thought that.

I was actually trying to take the drama out of the thermal detonator.  It would have worked if the reactions shots were good.  If I kept them all, it looks very cheesy and looks like a bunch of muppets got scared of something... along with bobba fett.  If I just keep Bobba, it looks like cheesy overdramatic-attempt because there is big music but only one shot. Also, I haven't edited the opening scene with Vader on the DSII at all, so there's still a slow opening to sort of... get the film going before the pace picks up.

I guess I'd need to watch the original again.  Any of you other guys have thoughts on the clip?

And Possessed, you've seen the sub-title thread, right?  It might have information there that could be helpful.

I quite like Threepio's reaction to Luke's presenting the droids to Jabba as a gift.   It does work, and we have to bear in mind that many edits seem strange as we know these films so well that we expect to see what has always been there.  On the other hand, one might argue that a more dramatic reaction to the news would be more in character for Threepio.

The reaction to the thermal detonator is clever, but a little too quick for my liking.  You are absolutely right about the Muppets-style reaction shots, but I think that unfortunately the best of the bad bunch might have to stay.  Could you keep Boba Fett and change the music?

I might try that, keep bobba fett and change the music.  But I don't know what else would fit, it would just be too quick of a reaction.

I had intended for it to come off as threepio already knowing they are being offered as a gift.  This is why he now just says "And... a gift." He no longer says "Gift? What gift?"

EDIT: I just had an idea to slow it down a bit.  What if, instead of reaction shots, I cut from the shot of the detonator to a shot of Leia's face, glaring at jabba, and then cut to jabba's reaction to it.

I think that would work nicely for that.

That is a good idea.  In that case, you could cut the shot of Threepio.

That might work.  You could also cut to Bobo Fett's drawing his weapon, then cut to Leia-as-Bounty-Hunter's glaring at Jabba, before finally showing Jabba's response.  That would have the advantage of giving you more of a reaction from "the room" - as it were -  and make Boba's subsequent lowering of his weapon seem more consistent.  (We might, of course, have surmised that Boba had drawn the weapon at some point anyway, but leaving it in might avoid potential confusion.)

Just seen your clip - looks good, I havnt seen the original movie for a while so all i noticed was the rancor had been cut out, but will watch it again for the changes mentioned above - cutting the rancor is good and looked like a seamless cut. I wouldnt miss the rancor scene at all...

On the other hand, I would say be even more drastic with the cuts - I think much more could be removed from the palace scene - how would it look if you removed everything from the droids entering the palace untill Luke enters.

ie....cut from Darth vaders arrival at the death star to Lukes arrival at Jabbas Palace. Wouldnt that make it more mysterious and a darker Tone?

i havnt looked to see if it would work tho.

Anyway just my thoughts, will enjoy following your work.

You can never go home again, but i guess you can shop there.

The rancor battles Luke... the clip doesn't even go that far I'm not cutting the rancor.

That's a good idea, I'll try that. I might also try to slow down bobba drawing his weapon, with a little motion blur.  He looks like he's quick drawing in a suprised reaction to something, but in reality he's a little late, so I'll try to make it seem more... menacing.

Just so you guys know, I am making great progress on this edit.  I would estimate completion of actual editing to be completed in a week or two, or less.  Color correction shouldn't take long, I'm going to try and do it with colourlike histograms with avisynth.

I've borrowed many ideas from Spence's 2.0 edit, but hopefully most of it is me.
