One special election is not enough to draw midterm conclusions from, but when it fits so clearly into an existing pattern, it’s safe to say something’s going on. Counting Tuesday’s result, Democratic candidates in federal special elections have now outperformed the normal partisan leans of their state or district by an average of 17 percentage points. In recent midterm election cycles, that number has tracked closely with the eventual national popular vote for the U.S. House.

In other words, the result in Pennsylvania 18 is just the latest indication that Republicans are in trouble. The best predictors of midterm strength we have — President Trump’s approval rating, the generic ballot, congressional retirements and special elections — all are saying the same thing. In fact, of those, special election results may suggest the rosiest future for Democrats.

Contained in Warb’s paranthetical is the idea that a gun safety lesson in a school can be legitimate but this guy shouldn’t be teaching it based on actions evincing recklessness. mfm takes the view that no such class is ever acceptable and/or any accident is proof of absurdity and incompetence.

I’m not sure whether a gun safety class is acceptable or not, but it is certainly not legitimate for a teacher to decide to do this on his own without the school’s knowledge or permission.

Knock it off.

Why do you keep telling mfm to “knock it off” when he’s making valid points about your posts?

In your opinion.

Also in my opinion: telling someone to “knock it off” when they’re arguing a point rather than making personal attacks is childish.

He was doing more than arguing a point.

That teacher has no business teaching anyone gun safety(if I understand gun safety enough). I could be mistaken, but I doubt it.

Why even shoehorn in this little bit of apologetics. You know full well (I hope) that this was absurd and incompetent.

Huh?

You often have a stubborn reluctance to condemn things like this,

Excuse me for wanting to know all of the facts before condemning. But in this case, I did condemn. I condemned the teacher for having his finger on the trigger at a time when he wasn’t intending to shoot, and for teaching an unauthorized gun safety class.

Given the school’s reaction, I’d be surprised if this was done without the school’s knowledge or permission. You’re right there’s a lot we don’t know here.

Sometimes this can be construed as you waiting to hear a fact that completely exonerates the person others are condemning, not as you simply wanting the complete picture.

When it’s something that seems as indefensible as the dog dying in the compartment or the gun safety “lesson,” saying you’re waiting for all the facts can sound like you’re saying that you believe the individual to be innocent, and are sticking your fingers in your ears until you hear one nugget of fact that supports the possibility that they did no wrong.

You have little room to talk when it comes to being childish.
