'Police Academy' Set for Eighth Edition
By Liza Foreman

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Police Academy" is back. After a decade's absence from the big screen, the cop comedy franchise is gearing up for an eighth installment.

"I felt it was time to start again," said series creator Paul Maslansky. "I saw that 'Starsky & Hutch' and a number of other revivals were doing really well. 'Police Academy' has such a great history. I thought, 'Why not?"'

According to Maslansky, who will serve as an executive producer, the talent from the first seven features has expressed a keen interest in the revival, with Maslansky looking to combine both new and the "original talent" for the next "Police Academy."

"We became very much like a family," he said. "It's is very unusual to have seven films with virtually all the same major cast."

The project is being developed by Warner Bros. Pictures and its Australian joint-venture partner Village Roadshow. The project is out to writers, with the exact direction of the newest installment yet to be determined.

The most recent sequel in the franchise was "Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow" in 1994. The first "Police Academy" hit screens in 1984, bringing in a domestic box office take of $81.2 million. Then it was a film a year through 1989, with "Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment" released in 1985, "Police Academy 3: Back in Training" in 1986, "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol" in 1987, "Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach" in 1988 and "Police Academy 6: City Under Siege" in 1989. Altogether, the franchise brought in more than $230 million at the domestic box office. Maslansky also serviced the small screen with "Police Academy: The Animated Series" in 1993 and "Police Academy: The Series" in 1997.

Maslansky is working on several other projects, including another institution-based project, "Stunt School." There's also a New Orleans-set jazz feature about the life of Buddy Bolden, the first king of jazz.

Funny, I've thought Mission to Moscow was the 8th one. Oh well.

If they get Steve Gutenberg and Bob Goldthwait (are both of them still alive?) back to the series, we'll be fine.

We can't. It's like the Olsen twins; no matter how hard we try to ignore them they refuse to go away.

As long as the original cast is coming back, i don't have a problem with it. It's no worse than "Jason X" or "Jason vs. Freddie". Talk about overkill.

you should watch police academy 7, it is terrible and it has some of the original cast. Maybe we could hire Mangler Bros Inc. to take care of the people involved in trying to make this movie.

I just thought about it......maybe Jay & Silent Bob could save Police Academy.

Hmm! That would be called Jay And Silent Bob's Academy.

A Kevin Smith directed Police Academy movie? Nah. It would be like Clerks set in a police station... Uh... Wait a minute...

I think the prevention of the reanimation of this comedy corpse, might be worth a road trip (I'd sponsor a clone army or two, yet I'd assume the mangler brothers'd be enough for the job).

are you trying to sujest that what the Mangles Bros can't handle, the clone armies can ??!?? You've got that reversed, and there is nothing the Mangle Bros can't handle.

Star Wars fans organizing a road trip in order to stop Police Academy 8 of being produced? That's the plot of a comedy movie by itself!

Academy 8 should be set in Space! IMO, since they like to take some many trips in the past.

My fav on that cast is: Debbie Callahan Played by Ms Leslie Easterbrook!! She was Yummy to look at! hehe.

other than her I found Jones (Sound Fx Man) Cool too.

I know the tackleberry guy died.

The Police Academy series has the most "Is he Still Alive"-kinda actors cast of any movie series at all! The SFX guy, Steve Guttenberg, Bobcat, Mr T... Wait, Mr T was not on Police Academy...

Tack the actor died or Tack the character died in the movies?

Okay, just checked IMDb and you mean Tack the actor (David Graf). I had no idea he died.

Here's a tally of the main characters...

Tackleberry - David Graf - died April 7, 2001 (cardiac arrest)
Mahoney - Steve Guttenberg - still alive
Harris - G.W. Bailey - still alive
Hightower - Bubba Smith - still alive
Cmdt. Lassard - George Gaynes - still alive
Callahan - Leslie Easterbrook - still alive
Jones (SFX guy) - Michael Winslow - still alive
Sweetchuck - Tim Kazurinsky - still alive
Hooks - Marion Ramsey - still alive
Zed - Bobcat Goldthwait - still alive (and still together with Nikki Cox as far as I can tell... lucky bastard)
Proctor - Lance Kinsey - still alive
Mauser - Art Metrano - still alive
Sgt. Lassard - Matt McCoy (#6-7) - still alive

So, pretty much all the main characters are still alive. Whether or not they're all still willing to do it is another question. My main reason for wanting to see it ain't gonna be there. Tack was my fave of the bunch. Although the humiliation that Harris and Mauser went through on occasion was great.
