Pirates of the Caribbean and the Political Correctness Craze

Author
Time

As some of you may or may not know, the iconic auction scene from this classic Disney attraction that has been there since opening day has been changed to be more politically correct. Anybody have any thought on this? Personally, I hate to see it go since it’s so iconic and is the only scene Walt Disney himself watched before his death. Here are both the old and new scene.

Sadly, that ship sailed back when they made some PC changes in the late 90’s.

At least we’ll always have Pirates of the Pancreas whenever the heck Anatomy Park opens. 😉

The 90’s changes and the movie changes sucked too, but somehow I was still able to tolerate them. This just seems like it’s gone too far, and poorly done to boot.

What PC changes did they make in the late 90’s?

Isn’t the whole point of that ride irreverence?

I also thought the idea of making changes to tie it more to the movie were dumb. I thought it was charming that the movie was based on a ride. Why dilute that interesting history?

The famous “chase scene” originally featured the pirates chasing women around in circles. There was also one pirate who was leaned up against a barrel who held a piece of a woman’s clothing and asked the guests if they’d seen her as she poked her head out from a barrel behind him. The women were later given food so it looked like that’s what the pirates were lusting after instead. The pirate who held the girls clothes was given a turkey leg to hold instead.

No one cared about the auction scene until someone pointed out it was sexist, at which point of course dudes on the internet started to pretend it was an integral part of the ride.

Pirates are inherently sexist viewed through a 21st century perspective. It’s not the Privateers who ask nicely before raiding your town ride. And I was upset back in the 90’s before internet rage was a thing. 😉
Isn’t there a homage to the auction scene in one of the POTC movies though?

Whoops, didn’t know a family theme park was obligated to accurately portray problematic aspects of their rides’ subjects.

By that metric, I assume Trump recites the Access Hollywood tape in the Hall of Presidents.

They’re not. But I doubt anyone had an issue with it until recently. It’s a slippery slope. Give an inch, they’ll demand a yard. Somebody is going to have a cow over the headhunters on the Jungle Cruise ride if they haven’t already.

If there’s a Jabba’s palace section in the forthcoming Star Wars land, forget about any slave girls.

I do see the point of changing the burning settler’s cabin on the Rivers Of America section of the park I first saw in the 1970’s. This was pretty disturbing to me as a little kid.

Fuck family entertainment. Show your kids some “problematic aspects” of things. It’ll give 'em character.

Mostly this.

I think it’s fine to update rides to suit modern tastes but I worry about that slippery slope.

There is a new kind of Puritanism behind these changes. It’s amazing what was permitted in children’s entertainment 40/50 years ago. There was a Muppet Show sketch/song where a pregnant Miss Piggy in a wedding dress was left standing at the church by her already married boyfriend, played by Kermit. I guess our society was more broad-minded in those days!

The blue elephant in the room.

Nothing makes me more sick than people who care about sheltering children from things in entertainment.

It’s not even that, it’s a poor joke in poor taste.

It’s not the end of the world, obviously, but it really isn’t worth defending.

This.

I can’t wait to get home tonight so I can show my seven-year-old daughter Saw.

Do it!

EDIT: Don’t show her Saw since Saw sucks, but at least show her Silence of the Lambs or something that is both gruesome and artistic.

I’d show my daughter Phenomena. Not only is Jennifer Connelly’s character a strong, capable female protagonist, there’s a swimming pool full of putrescent corpses, too.
