Will Do...

Well to report on what is going on with this on my end, I got the audio and video footage from Mitch last week. First thing I did was to view the movie in German to see how it looked and the story flow of that version. Next I started to rip the video to my PC, and play with the sound. On Friday I had to go on a 3 day SCUBA trip, so work did not pick up again untill yesterday. The Laserdisc I got should be here any day, and I think the sound may be better on that. If it's not, then I'll use the sound from the VHS version.

I may have located a teaser trailer in poor shape for the Restoration disc. It's coming from a friend in Germany in German language. I am keeping my fingers crossed as fanfiltration continues his look at teh Highlander Restoration.

This sounds like a cool project. I loved the original Highlander but pretty much hated its sequel.

As for bad SF, I just hope we all agree that Battlefield Earth is at the top of the list.

Update 02/06/06:

The unreleased German letterboxed print Mitch provided looks FANTASTIC!

It's so much better than any other print of Highlander 2 that I've ever seen in any format. This blows ALL DVD versions of this movie away!

Well the English audio track from that poor quality Pan & Scan VHS from Japan has now been overdubbed onto of the unreleased German letterbox version. The Laserdisc I got last week was the bad American version of the film, so it was of little help in this project. Good news is that I was able to improve the sound of the VHS soundtrack allot. But again, bad news. The two versions did not match up in some spots, so much more work for me to do. The VHS version had a longer running time with some shots not on the German print. The two running times did not synch up at all, and I had to split up the film into lots of bits and adjust the video time to synch with the audio tracks then put it all back together and render.

Another problem was with some bad digital video and audio glitches on each of the two audio and video masters provided me. To fix these problems, I am using the Renegade Version DVD. I'll have to adjust the video quality of the RV to match the German print. So far the project is looking good. What we will have as an end result is a unique version of Highlander 2 (in English) that is different from any other released version of the film. This "NEW" version most closely resembles the original British theatrical edit (not available on any video format in letterbox), but has an ending more like the American theatrical version.

Another thing I am doing to this print of H2, is enhancing it for 16:9 televisions. As an extra, I took the alternate (fairytale) ending from the Pan & Scan VHS, and cropped out the subtitles and made it look like it's now in letterbox. This ending was only on the original British theatrical print, and is not contained on any known video release. This is the completed version of that ending. A very raw version of some elements of this scene can be found in the extras section of the 2004 Lions Gate DVD. This "Fairytale" ending can be used as a little DVD bonus, or we can reconstruct the entire original British version as a second DVD project.

MORE TO COME!

Thanks again Fanfiltration for taking this project. ;-)

This version is going to ROCK!!!! I thought of an idea, maybe we could branch that fiarytale ending as an extra on the disc like OCP did with the OOLA scene on the Return of the jedi Classic Editon..just an idea for the future release.

It's truely the defenitive version. The New Lions Gate DVD is good but they tried to hard to make the public happy and changed to much of the story and the narrative. This is the version that Rusell M. himslef and Panzer went back after the US debocle relase and recut closer to actaul script. On the new DVD from Lions Gate they changed the whole Ziest thing which was a good idea but they screwed it up when they tried to change everything to make it earths past.... they should have just left it.....the way it was..

This Fanfiltration version is gonna be great....

BTW!!! If anyone has any rare Highlander stuff such as unreleased material, trailers, TV spots, rare photos. Televison making ofs or anything that relates to the Highlander series let Fanfiltration or myslef know. With all the materieal it just may get added to a extras section of the disc or discs that after the project is done I may help make. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Which shield footage are you going to use? The Blue or the Orange Shield? One thing I like about the new Lionsgate version is the transfer. Plus I think they may have done some CG on some of the wires from the first fight scene with the guy flying around. I'll have to check it again. I think that hiding wires is always a good thing. Also, the sex scene with Madsen seemed a bit steamier in the Lionsgate version. Can't remember if it was the same in the Renegade cut.

I would say if it was at all possible to cut the entire Zeist/Earth storyline, that would be the first one I would do.

Just my 2 cents.

New news on the Highlander 2: Euro Version Project -

I have started to get this project going again .

Here is what has transpired over the last year -

September 2005 - I dig up an old Highalnder 2 TV cut from my collection which has the title (Highlander) on it. Quickly, I put it into the recorder and it eats the tape.... I cry for a day!! Later, I am going through boxes once again and find another copy of the same tape marked ( Highalnder 3 workprint) I put it in and it's Highlander 2 TV cut - God! I hated myself back then, to this day I still don't even know the shit I have, Igo threw it every day. In the last two years I now mark evrything and keep track on a list of what I have. There was a time heavily into trading that I would get shit from people and didn't even watch it. MY god!! was I a nut...

Dec 3rd 2005 - My Highlander project gets of the ground with concepts of a possible recut of the film, this would use deleted/ extended footage from an OOP Scandanavian DVD which wasa copy of the British theatrical version which was different from the U.S. Version and is far superior, However, sadly had German language only. Anyways, after thinking about the project day in and day out I decided to drop the idea of a recut and restore Highlander 2 to it's best possible glory ( if there was one). Highlander 2 got a crappy U.S. botched release but in Europe they got a completly different cut which was closer to the Rengade version that exists today. However, The Euro cut features Ziest in all it's glory and extra footage only found on this version.

Jan 2006 - I contact Adigitalman with an offer on the project and he turns it down. But gives me the instruction on how I could learn to do it on my own. Truth is I suck and know it and don't want a botched job!!! If i am going to accomplish this i am going to get this off the ground with some help.

Jan 16, 2006 - Project offically launches and work is done to collect the best possible cuts of the film from various fans around the world.
I located at least five different cuts of the TV version and One Euro Cut which was in widescreen )sadly no 16:9) but I'll take widesreen. However, the original intended fairytale ending most commenly seen on the TV cuts from around the world was not in the Widescreen transfer. The fairytale ending which i will have in my cut becasue it was in the offical british release exists only on the New DVD of the Renegade Cut in workprint form. But, my various TV cuts feature the scene complete but in fullscreen only.

Jan 2006 - Fanfiltration contacts me via email and shows interest in the project. I quickly box up my best cuts of the film and he begins a restoration project on the film. In the meantime I forget to send revernbeastly his Ace Ventura TV cut, he slams me into the ground!!! JK!! No he was unhappy but willing to give me extra time to send him a copy!! anyways, i fianlly find time to send him a copy and my attention is again shifted back onto this project.

Jan 2006 - Fanfiltraion doesn't email me for weeks!! I am getting to be a nut case. I email him at least once a week and nothing. However, states in an earlier post - Building a better "Highlander 2" can, AND WILL be done!

Feb 2006 - Fanfiltration finally contact me and alerts to me that there are several errors in the discs I sent him and tells me he has shelved the project until further notice. He also states that he will send me copies of the disc to where he left off and he will get back to me. He say's he has little time and want to devote his time to the Dune project but he will try in month to get to it.

March 2006 - I give Fanfiltration another month and kindly reply to his email. I state on the email ( I know you are busy but can we ever get this project going and do you need new transfers. can I offer help? At this time I was working on Menus for the proposed 2-disc set and have came across a rare soundtrack. Fanfiltration never replies as to this day.

March 23 2006 - I am halted after work is returned to an earlier project of mine - finally completing my Superman 4 Recut in workprint rough cut form. I send the disc to Rikter who replies it's got potential but he never speeks of it again. No one seems interested in the project so I shelved it for a later date hoping that I can generate some buzz after Superman Returns is released.. I will keep my original recut idea and finsh it someday if anyone cares. BTW!! Rikter now has the only copy of my rough cut as my computer crashed and I lost it all. I still have to get a copy from him. I hope he didn't throw it away.. oops!! I mean it was my first edit job learning it all from a OCP and a ADigitalman thread as to how to cut movies. There help was great but I am years away.

March 30th 2006 - I start work on restoring the horrible sound elemsts from the various cuts. ( Now sound is where I ahve some talent) But, I quicly stop due to it being to difficult to edit sound elemsnts from various versions. I am now going with an australian MONO broadcast version for the englsih overlay onto the widescreen cut. I get an email form another fan who stated he will take on the project if i give him all of my rarest DVD's - I tell him to take a hike!!!!

April 6th 2006 - I am contacted by a fan who actaully went to the OLD Rare and Uncut Movie Collector website of mine and emailed me.
He (PhinouesBg) states he is interested in my resoration project and that he has been looking for my cuts I aquired fro years. Finally, someone has interest!!!! Horray. He states that he is working on a extended cut of the film with all know footage availble and needs my Euro Cut.
After talking him into a few thing, he is going to overlay the english TV audio onto the widescreen Euro transfer.

May 1st 2006 - Project halts as suddenly he nver replies to my emails oddly! I am think here we go again????? another Fanfiltration back burner but this time I haven't sent any discs..lol!!

May 15th 2006 -
The project was started again by a fan (PhinouesBg) who has done some work in editing. Ofcourse, my attention immedialty shifted to asking him how much work he has done in the past and he told me. trust me I'm good!!

May 16th - I am trusting him!!!! And I am sending him all my best copies!!!!! he say's he will begin work on the project as soon as he gets the cuts. I have the Menus which are interactive ready to go and in rough form to add any material of behind the scenes footage or making of etc... to it.

June 5th 2006 - We have assembled all known cuts of the films - THE AMERICAN VERSION, THE BRITISH VERSION, THE GERMAN VERSION, THE RENEGADE VERSION and the 2004 SPECIAL EDITION

July 2006

Today PhineosBG is working on the American Version Pan-and-Scan NTSC DVD master and the
American Version (Anamorphic Widescreen 5.1 Audio) Master

Here is an update on the progress, thanks to PhineusBg and Nighthawks FanDVD for the great work so far.

Turns out that multiple cuts will need to be restored in order to make a Extended Version Master

HIGHLANDER II: ORIGINAL THEATRICAL FULL TRAILER

HIGHLANDER - WHO WANTS TO LIVE - FOREVER MUSIC VIDEO - AS HEARD IN HIGHLANDER I AND II

A sneak peak at the proposed Highlander Vengence Anime Film for 2008

The masters will consist of the following: The American Cut, The British Cut, The German Cut, The Renegade Cut and the 2004 Special Edition Cut All cuts must be restored to the best possible using the best known footage.

PhineusBg is going BALLS out on these versions and I am working on the DVD menus as well as the Supplementals.

Because we need to restore all the versions to have correct masters for the Exteneded Cuts and the proposed Re-Cut we need all the footage in the best possible condition. There are two phases so far that we are working on.

THESE ARE THE PHASES THAT ARE CURRENTLY BEING WORKED ON -

PHASE ONE: PREPARING THE MASTERS

To Create My "American Theatrical Version" Master:
1. Convert the video of my PAL Fullscreen American Version DVD to 23.976fps to get proper running time.
2. Convert the audio to the proper NTSC running time. This audio is 2 channel stereo AC3. Burn this DVD with 3:2 pulldown to a single-layer blank.
3. Result is a Fullscreen NTSC DVD with properly synched 2 channel stereo AC3 audio, which can be used as a fullscreen (video) master of the American Theatrical Version in the future if needed.
4. Strip the above stereo audio, and convert it to mono.
5. My Converted Widescreen French PAL DVD of the American Cut has tinny vocal audio due to poor quality of the American Vocal Channel.
To resolve this, I will replace the Vocal Channel with the mono audio created in Step 4 (manually synched). Then burn this DVD with 3:2 pulldown to a dual-layer blank.
6. Result is a high-quality anamorphic widescreen NTSC of the American Theatrical Version, with excellent 5.1 AC3 audio.

To Create My "Special Edition" Master:
1. No conversion needed. The DVD of the Special Edition is already in high-quality 5.1 surround and in dual-layer anamorphic NTSC format. Note, however, that I will need to convert this DVD to 23.976fps for editing purposes.

To Create My "Renegade Version" Master:
1. Convert the video of my letterboxed Renegade Version DVD to Anamorphic Widescreen 23.976fps.
2. Due to compression of the letterboxed Renegade Version DVD, I will replace as many scenes as possible with my Special Edition Master, and my American Theatrical Version Master.
3. Due to the Renegade Version DVD having only 2 channel audio, I will use as much of my Special Edition Master 5.1 audio as possible. Any other audio (probably only one scene), will be
converted to 5.1 surround manually. Burn this DVD with 3:2 pulldown to a dual-layer blank.
4. Result is a high-quality anamorphic widescreen NTSC of the Renegade Version, with excellent 5.1 AC3 audio.

To Create My "German Language NTSC" DVD Master:
1. Convert the video of my PAL German Language DVD to it's proper anamorphic NTSC proportions, and convert the frame rate to 23.976fps to get proper running time.
2. Convert the audio to the proper NTSC running time. This audio is 5.1 channel stereo AC3. Burn this DVD with 3:2 pulldown to a single-layer blank.
6. Result is a high-quality anamorphic widescreen NTSC of the German Language Version, with 5.1 AC3 audio.
NOTE: The censorship of the German DVD will remain for purity purposes.

To Create My "It's So Blue" Raw Video/Audio Footage Master:
1. Convert the "It's So Blue" video of the fullscreen TV Master to 23.976fps anamorphic NTSC widescreen proportions, cropping out subtitles.
2. Convert the "It's So Blue" audio of the fullscreen TV Master to 5.1 audio.
3. Result is anamorphic widescreen NTSC 5.1 Video/Audio footage of the Raw "It's So Blue" Footage.

To Create My "Fairytale Ending - Brenda Takes Connor's Hands" Raw Video Footage Master:
1. Convert to 23.976fps and color-correct the very last shot of the fairytale ending footage found
on the Special Edition deleted scenes section (where Brenda takes Connor's hands).
This shot is exactly the same as the British Version.
2. Result is anamorphic widescreen NTSC video footage of the Raw "Brenda Takes Connor's Hands" Footage.

To Create My "Fairytale Ending (British Version)" Footage Master:
1. Convert the "Fairytale Ending" video of the fullscreen TV Master to anamorphic NTSC widescreen proportions, cropping out subtitles. Apply 3:2 pulldown.
2. Convert the "Fairytale Ending" audio of the fullscreen TV Master to 5.1 audio.
3. Replace the "Brenda Takes Connor's Hands" fullscreen video footage shot with the new high-quality Raw Video Footage Master.
3. Result is anamorphic widescreen NTSC 5.1 Video/Audio footage of the "Fairytale Ending (British Version)" Footage.

To Create My "Deleted Scenes" Footage Master:
1. Convert to 23.976fps the deleted scenes found on the Special Edition deleted scenes section.
2. Apply music, sound effects, and special effects (if needed) to the deleted scenes.
3. Convert audio to 5.1 surround.
4. Result is anamorphic widescreen NTSC 5.1 Video/Audio footage of the "Deleted Scenes" Footage.

-----------------------------------------------------

With the Masters made, we can now make the various extended cuts:

PHASE TWO: CREATING THE NEW CUTS DVD'S:

To Create My "British Version" Master:
NOTE: All footage used will first have to be converted to 23.976fps for editing purposes.
1. Use the best elements of the Special Edition, American Theatrical Version, and Renegade Version Masters
for any scenes that are NOT different from the British Version.
2. Any elements in the British Version that are different from the above Masters,
will use the German video and/or audio, with the exception of the "It's So Blue!" and "Fairytale Ending (British Version)" scenes.
3. Use the new Footage Masters of the "Fairytale Ending" (British Version) and "It's So Blue" scenes.
4. Apply 3:2 pulldown and burn to blank DVD.
4. Result is a high-quality anamorphic widescreen NTSC of the British Version, with excellent 5.1 AC3 audio.
NOTE: There will be no censorship, as the British Version is uncensored.

To Create My "Full Uncut Version" Master:
NOTE: This is a Full Cut with original special effects. (Including ALL voiceovers and prolouge text, with all Planet Zeist references, some deleted scenes restored, and the fairytale ending reintegrated).
NOTE: All footage used will first have to be converted to 23.976fps for editing purposes.
1. Use the proper (and best) elements of the Special Edition, American Theatrical Version, British Version, Deleted Scenes, and Renegade Version Masters.
2. Apply 3:2 pulldown and burn to blank dual-layer DVD.
3. Result is a high-quality anamorphic widescreen NTSC of the Full Uncut Version, with excellent 5.1 AC3 audio.
NOTE: Any footage that can't be reintegrated, will be on the DVD as supplementary material.

To Create My "Extended Version" Master:
NOTE: This is an Extended Cut with original special effects. (But will NOT have the two voiceovers and prolouge text).
3. Result is a high-quality anamorphic widescreen NTSC of the Extended Version, with excellent 5.1 AC3 audio.
NOTE: Any footage that can't be reintegrated, will be on the DVD as supplementary material.

To Create My "Extended Version with new FX" Master:
NOTE: This is an Extended Cut with the Special Edition special effects. (But will NOT have the two voiceovers and prolouge text).
3. Result is a high-quality anamorphic widescreen NTSC of the Extended Version with new FX, with excellent 5.1 AC3 audio.
NOTE: Any footage that can't be reintegrated, will be on the DVD as supplementary material.

To Create My "Extended Zeist Version with new FX" Master:
NOTE: This is an Extended Cut with the Special Edition special effects. (But will NOT have the two voiceovers and prolouge text, or the fairytale ending).
3. Result is a high-quality anamorphic widescreen NTSC of the Extended Version with new FX, with excellent 5.1 AC3 audio.
NOTE: Any footage that can't be reintegrated, will be on the DVD as supplementary material.

To Create My "PhineasBg Version" Master:
NOTE: This is an Special Cut with the Special Edition special effects. (This is a special cut I will be making to make the film more "serious". This cut will have the Special Edition effects. There will be Zeist references, but it will not be "Planet Zeist." Instead, it will be "The Land of Zeist." The "future" references from the Renegade Cut will remain. It will have some deleted scenes restored. Many goofy parts, like the Airplane Video, will be removed. No fairytale ending.).
3. Result is a high-quality anamorphic widescreen NTSC of the Extended Version with new FX, with excellent 5.1 AC3 audio.
NOTE: Any footage that can't be reintegrated, will be on the DVD as supplementary material.

Mitch, you are an outright liar!

It's sad you must slander my good name & reputation due to the fact that I could not drop everything in my life (including the restoration of my storm damaged home) and give your Highlander 2 project the undivided attention you so desired. When I offered to lend a hand with the resynching of your source DVDs, I told you that it would take a huge amount of time and work. I also let you know that I would need a great amount of time to assist in this work. I've made every attempt to keep good communications on the project. Beyond me saying that I was still working on the sound, there was not much else to say...

This video editing is a HOBBY!

No one gets paid unless you are doing something that violates copyright laws & the rules of this forum. Like most humans, I need to eat, and that means working for real money.

Funny how in the above update about your Highlander 2 project (marked Edited July 6, 2006) , you make no mention that I was able to complete about 85% of the most complicated sound work for you within 4 months. Also, that I've sent you all the work I had done so far for you, and you replied via a PM with great enthusiasm on their quality. Another thing you fail to mention is that after I sent you my completed sound work in early May, that you asked me once again to re-join your H2 project and that you would like for me to forward to you some rare Highlander 2 Press kit video I have in my collection.

Yes, I did reply to you the second week of May on that offer & request. And yet once again I honestly stated how I would like to be involved, but I was not sure how much time I could give your Highlander 2. You must have not liked that answer, due to the fact it's the last contact I had from you.

So now I see you have some fresh help on this H2 project, and I can understand on how you want to keep moving ahead, but it's very rude for you to just slander me and make misleading accusations on my participation. And on a public forum too!

Your stated reaction when no one was "jumping up" to reply to your Superman post is a perfect example of the type of immature attitude I am dealing with.

I thanked you for your efforts w/ the Highlander British Version

I just moved on and you were going to let me know when you found the time to finish.
Your project is not gone to waste -

I didn;t know you were off the project! I am and still going to give you full credit and hope that you do finish that version, I know we all have lives..
Sorry for the misunderstanding-

I apologize for coming off as strong as I died. I hope you excpet my sincere apology.

I have said many times in THREADS that I have enjoyed your work.

If you noticed about three replys up I did thank you for your efforts.... take a look!!!

APOLOGY TO FANFILTRATION - HIS WORK IS BY FAR SOME OF THE BEST WORK I HAVE SEEN. I OFFER AN APOLOGY AND HOPES HE STAYS ON WITH THE PROJECT. SOMETIMES LIFE GETS THE BEST OF YOU AND SUDDENLY IT FLIES BY AND YOUR LIFE AND THE PROBLEMS IN THE ESCALATE

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.
