I liked Lost in Translation a lot especially because of its originality. I know I'm gonna get flamed for not picking ROTK. But I feel that if any of the LOTR films deserved Best Picture, it would be TTT. Yes, the visuals were great in ROTK and I loved the Smeagol/Deagol bit in the beginning and the development of Pippen's character, the movie just wasn't as good as the previous two. I was bored with several stretches of it and just wanted that damn ending to actually end already.

However, knowing the Academy, they are going to run with ROTK because it is a sentimental favorite due to the time and effort exerted by Peter Jackson, et al, which is not how they should do it. They should be judging based on this movie alone and not the series.

My money goes to Lost in Translation.

plain and simple this year ROTK will represent to entire trilogy. for that reason it will win. lotr was more like one big movie then it will ever be 3 seperate movies and for that reason i think the trilogy will be looking it lotr as movie of the year not as RotK.

if that didnt make any sence plz forgive me in the last 5 days i have gone through 17 and a half hours of exams so i am a bit worn out.

yes the ending took way too long to get to and then it came a half hour later

it was ending 3 movies not one, inorder to have given lotr a rouned effect he had to do that, or it wouldnt feel finished.

I picked option #1 because my two favourite films of the year (Kill Bill Vol I and Dirty Pretty Things) didn't make the list. I can understand the snub for Kill Bill, but Dirty Pretty Things really deserved Academy recognition.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

i dont know why it is not up there. personally i felt that the last samuri should have gotten recognition.

I'm amazed that Johnny Depp got the nod for PotK. Not that it's a bad performance, but the nomination seems so uncharacteristic for the Academy.

I haven't seen Lost in translation yet, part of me wants to vote for Master & Commander, because I really really liked it. But I think overall ROTK (despite many problematic elements) is still the best in many ways.

Even though I'm a fan of the books, I kind of think that the ending could of been cut and saved for the EE. When all of Gondor bows to the hobbits, that could of been the ending and left 90% of audiences very happy.

Still ROTK was great, not quite as good as FOTR, but much better then TTT, and all around the best paced of the three with a lot of solid entainment value.

I liked Mystic river when I saw it, but the more I think about it, it was actually pretty bad.

Still haven;t seen Seabiscuit either.

Its hardly an oscar worth perfomance, especially considering Depp's incredible portfolio of work. In general I found POTC to be very average, with Depp's role being the only real stand out element.

Geoffrey Rush very nearly stole the show, though.

I'm not surprised based on its "uncharacteristicness". Recall Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda? Hell, he went beyond just being nominated and won the award.

Yeah, but that was a supporting nod; they're more inclined to give it to unconventional nominees there, or did you forget Marisa Tomei?

True on Tomei. But, this whole year is proving unconventional to some degree. Keisha Castle-Hughes for best actress? Not that she doesn't deserve. I will be the first to admit that she was great in that role. But for the Academy to recognize her with a nomination blew my mind. If she wins, she will be the youngest winner. The previously recognized youngest winners (Tatum O'Neal and Anna Paquin) were supporting actress winners.

i think we should expect a commercial Oscar deliberation, since Jack Valenti said that no screeners will be sent to the members of the Academy or to anyone else for that matter. meaning that independent and indie films will not stand the biggest chance, coz the members have not seen the movie... although far-fatched, it could still mean something.

True on the no screeners policy. However, screeners were used in the past to determine the nominations as well (to the best of my recollection). So, the fact that these people were nominated despite the no-screener policy is still pretty big. And Whale Rider is out on video now anyway, so it would be easy enough for someone to see it.

i suggest we have an oscar pool on here... and whoever wins gets the admiration of all others on the boards as well as bragging rights.. lol
what do u say?

and for my comments on the oscars..
Johnny Depp - whoa! didnt see that coming for a million years... many are saying he's unlikely to win however from the movies ive seen i think his only real competition is Sean Penn.... however i would love to see Bill Murray win it just to hear his acceptance speech!!
Best Picture - i'm sayin LOTR not just because i like it but because they have to give some big credit to the movies as a whole.. and as someone else said on here that last movie represents them all...
Animated Feature Film - is it even a contest? lol

and ya whats with cold mountain gettin the cold shoulder.... damn from what ive been hearing about that movie i thought it would have been a regular in the nominee's list... goin to see it this weekend so maybe then ill understand why they kept it out....

and ya as for the majority of the technical awards... ( these being costume, visual effects, makeup) and all the rest... im guessing that LOTR will take home the majority...

so thats my two cents...
one thing im dreading about the Oscar's is stupid Joan and Melissa Rivers....
anyone else feel the same way?
lol
