Only Fools and Horses (Uncut Episodes)

Has anyone preserved any uncut episodes of this series?

For the uninitiated, this classic BBC sitcom has suffered from several cuts/edits to pretty much every home format it’s been released on (VHS/DVD), largely due to either use of copyright music and dialogue/slang that by today’s standards is deemed offensive. Interestingly enough, a lot of these episodes are broadcast unedited on UK channel “Gold”, which is the only channel the show is broadcast on these days (BBC1 haven’t broadcast the show in years from what I remember.) but of course there’s commercial breaks what seems like every 10 minutes and Gold sometimes apply their own edits (usually if it’s shown pre-watershed). iTunes in recent years have since released uncut episodes for download but DVD’s are still stuck with the butchered ones.

Here’s a list of edits that have been made to home video releases;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Only_Fools_and_Horses_home_video_releases

I’ve managed to recover/maintain a few pure episodes through rare DVD’s and VHS captures

“A Royal Flush” (From “The Only Fools and Horses DVD Collection” DVD Issue 13 released in 2005)
“Yuppy Love” (Ripped from a video streaming site (not YouTube) uploaded not too long ago)
“The Class of '62” (Capture to DVD from 1993 VHS release ‘Danger UXD’)
Miami Twice (Original 2-part version of 1991 Christmas Special with no laughter track on part 2, recorded on VHS by myself around Christmas 1998)

I’ve looked over the net over the years and never been able to find any uncut episodes preserved to I thought I’d get the ball rolling here.

Thanks.

I’ve been working on this project with a few contacts for a number of years now. Most episodes have been restored using digital sources. Does your copy of “Class of '62” have the undubbed line ‘There’s that Italian prat’ by any chance? The line is said by Trigger when they’re looking at their school football team photo. Apparently it went out like that on the original broadcast but I’ve never seen anything to back this up.

The only episodes we’re really struggling to find good sources for are:

• Series 1 Episodes 4-7 with original theme
• Series 2 Episode 3 “A Losing Streak” - Apparently this one also originally went out uncensored
• Series 5 Episode 2 “The Miracle of Peckham” (Which actually has further cuts not mentioned on the wiki page)
• Series 5 Episode 4 “Tea For Three”

Alas, My “The Class of '62” VHS copy has the dubbed line where Trigger says “kid” instead of “prat” (I’d forgotten about that one), but the scene where they’re singing along to “Mighty Quinn” is intact, unlike the DVD which cuts this and the scene fades in as Boycie is on the phone to Marlene.

I know there was a (now very rare) Series 1 VHS release which retained the original opening theme music. I’m assuming someone could just restore the original theme to the remaining episodes.

I’m sure I read that the Series 2 episode you speak of was already edited even before it was originally broadcast, so I doubt any unedited version exists to the public for that one.

I Sky+'d "The Miracle of Peckham and “Tea for Three” from Gold in 2014 and I believe both were around 90% unedited. I DVD-R’d them both but haven’t watched it in a while so can’t really confirm. “Tea For Three” is uncut on iTunes though.

I did have the 1996 Christmas trilogy taped on their first reruns in late 1997/early 1998 which had original music intact for “Heroes and Villans” (O Fortuna playing to Damen in the dream sequence) and “Time on our Hands” (original “Our House”), but that seems to have disappeared from my collection. “O Fortuna”, which features in pretty much every episode Damien is in, is always replaced with similar sounding stock music.

I’ve bought “Tea For Three”, “Thicker than Water” and “The Jolly Boys’ Outing” from iTunes and they’re all uncut, along with many others according to that wikipedia page. Trouble is it’s iTunes and can’t watch them on anything else, nor are they the best quality.

Hopefully that all makes sense.

I also have sources for “The Miracle of Peckham” and “Tea for Three” but they are somewhat insufficient for this project in my opinion. I’m hoping better copies turn up at some point. Unfortunately it’s not going to be practical to edit the existing clips of the original theme over the remaining Series 1 episodes, as the more familiar theme exceeds the length of the original one. As for the uncensored version of “A Losing Streak” it’s a clash of different ‘memories’ that have to be taken with a pinch of salt I guess.

Feel free to shoot me a PM, and we’ll work out some arrangements! 😃

That’s an impressive set you’ve got there! One episode that’s not yet been mentioned is “Sickness and Wealth” (from Series 6) which is interesting as the DVD version has extra scenes but the Simply Red song “It’s Only Love” that’s played in the Nag’s Head when Rodney, Albert and Cassandra are discussing Del’s condition has been removed. I suppose the original audio can be overlayed on the DVD version making it a fully complete extended version.

Forgot to mention, OFaH also has some uncut episodes/specials on Netflix here in the UK.

Being a bit cheeky here, as I have nothing to offer to assist with this project. I am however very interested in it, having become aware of the many cuts that exist when working through the “complete” dvd collection.
Are you planning to share through MySpleen (or somewhere else) when the project is complete?

Thanks
Nick
