Once Upon a Time in Mexico - Extra Spaghetti Edition (* unfinished project *)

Hi everyone, here’s a little something i’ve been working on. I love Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado trilogy, especially the final chapter. I also really enjoyed the deleted scenes, so I thought maybe I’d do an extended version like my Pirates edit. However, upon thinking about it, i came up with something a bit more interesting.

This film really is Rodriguez’s ode to old Spaghetti Westerns like The Good the Bad and the Ugly. He’s on the record multiple times saying he planned the film to be 2:35:1 widescreen, even though the dvd isn’t. So, what I decided to do was make this film look a bit more like the old Spaghetti Westerns. I made it extra widescreen (it’s obvious it was planned to be this way because you don’t lose a thing by adding the extra black bars) and I added a very minimal amount of dirt and slight discoloration to make it look a bit more rough and old. I think it adds to the experience of the film being a modern spaghetti western.

So, this edition isn’t meant to be an improvement, it’s just a cool little thing I made, and I think its a neat way to view the film. I’ll have it up in a few days, I’m just finishing up the subtitles for the Spanish scenes.

Wasn't this shown theatrically in 2.35:1? Why is the DVD 1.78:1 if that's the way Rodriguez intended it to be?

Please don't use a fixed matte. There are bound to be SOME scenes where you cut heads or toes. You should try to "correct" the framing in those scenes.

in the special features, the one where he talks about digital vs. film, he mentions he shot it in 2:35:1. I'm pretty sure it was theatrically like that as well, its just the dvd that isn't. You really do not lose a thing with the extra bars, it was shot to be like that.

If you put fixed black bars at the top and the bottom, you got yourself basicly a fixed matte.

Ok I see what your saying, but if he says it doesn't cut anything IMPORTANT out of the picture then I believe him!

Edited so that people actually understand wtf I'm saying!

He didnt say that, because that's obviously not the case. What he's saying is that by cutting off that image, you're not losing any of the actual important picture information. Parts you need to see aren't getting removed, only things that you don't.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Assuming that the frame would have to be centered

womble's giving me trouble with this one. it appears to be completely in sync when in the program, but the finished mpeg2 is waaaay out in scenes. I haven't been able to fix this yet. It's all ready to go once i get the sync right
