New Forum for Prequel Rewrites?

Author

I suggest there be a new forum for Prequel Rewrites.  There are a number of people interested here in the subject, but we don't have a good forum for it.  I know that I put a lot of my ideas and thoughts in the subject in the General Star Wars Chat forum and that a lot of ideas are discussed in the Fan Edits forum...  but without a forum of its own, it's my humble opinion that the projects will never take off, seeing how there is so much to discuss.

Here's a thread from Fan Edits that started as a project to make an animated Star Wars story, then became an animated Prequel Replacement, and, as far as I can tell, became a general discussion on rewriting the prequels:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/STAR-WARS-Movies-Animated/topic/10088/

Here is EyeShotFirst discussing his thoughts to write a novel series that would be alternate prequels:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Prequel-Trilogy-Fan-Edits-in-Novel-Form/topic/11458/

This thread is more about editing the movies in radical ways, rather than starting over with a complete rewrite... but it has some of the same ideas:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/The-Prequel-Radical-Redux-Ideas-Thread/topic/9911/

And a bunch of threads I started/hijacked so that I could discuss my ideas for a total rewrite:

This thread beginning at this post:
http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/How-would-you-have-done-ROTJ/post/366464/#TopicPost366464

And some from this post:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Fall-to-the-Dark-Side/topic/8843/

There are so many facets of a total rewrite to discuss.  I think having a forum that can have a thread for each discussion would help these projects along.

What interest is there in a seperate forum?

I had a thought yesteday after posting all of this:

Perhaps it should just be a forum for people writing new Star Wars stories, Fan Fics I guess, though that term carries with it such baggage.

Maybe a general forum for discussion of Star Wars Fiction and Lore? That includes discussing changes to the fiction made over the course of the EU as well as ideas for rewrites and revisions. Maybe have separate boards for Star Wars film discussion and Star Wars lore discussion?

That's true. That's why the cartoon idea was appealing since it implied that it was still a movie project. But if we can work out a reasonably good story, that could still happen, right?

I'll read through those links you posted to see if I can find a good starting point.

I only ever wrote one piece of what could be described as Fan-Fiction, a sequel to/continuation of Blake's 7.

I took it far too seriously and worked much too hard on it and if such a thing ever were to materilise on television I'm certain I'll be horribly and unfairly dismissive of it no matter how good it might be because gittishly I will compare it to a year spent on something nobody will ever read.

While it was an interesting exercise, I'm far too obsessive to actually enjoy doing something like that again with the near certainty of never getting it officially published or recognised.

But if there are enough people doing that sort of thing (the writing not the being a git thing) I'm sure Jay would give it some thought when he next re-jigs the site.

I would be very interested in a Star Wars writing forum.

I have an unhealthily complicated scheme for an alternate prequel series forming in my head. It's based mostly on a rough outline which I wrote some time ago, but then deleted telling myself it was no good dwelling on what could never be.

Once I began to hear some new ideas, though, I couldn't help but start to think of it again and am now in the process of dredging some of the old material up from my memory. An idea I had was to start a website that would feature these alternate scripts, along with some commissioned illustrations - maybe even a complete storyboard.

I like this idea.  I'm iffy about combining it with "fan fiction" per se - as you say, that term has quite a bit of baggage about it.  But to be fair, the idea of rewriting the prequels is pretty much fan fiction ...

To be clear: both Moth3r and Jay said they were mostly fine with this idea... (loosely quoted) they just wanted to make sure other people had an interest before wasting their time creating a new forum (also losely quoted).

It could be a very useful resource for people who, for example, want to re-write the dialogue spoken by subtitled aliens and droids (or re-dub those characters) or write different versions of the Star Wars crawls.

I think the assembled evidence in terms of the threads xhonzi has pulled together there could make it viable.

It could feed in nicely between the Star Wars General discussion area and the fan-edit side.

It should be more general though.

I think some people would want to re-write certain aspect of the OT or non-Star Wars films and television shows but (I suspect) not enough to justify a whole non-Star Wars section.

So maybe it should be a general re-write section rather than just a Star Wars PT one.

Based on the level of support above, I'm happy to recommend to Jay that he should add the new forum. All we need now is an agreed title and description for the new section.

I think this is an excellent idea, as much as i admire the work that people put in to creating fan edits of movies, (and this is just my view) I was disapointed that GL wasnt as successfull this time around with the Prequel movies.

and although many people have come up with impressive edits they are all limited by what was originally filmed.

I think a forum for people to work on new scripts or novels for the prequels would be great and allow for more exploration of the star wars mythos and essentially unlimited imagination.

You can never go home again, but i guess you can shop there.

Why not call it the Script Writing And Re-Writing forum?

That would be general enough to cover everything from PT and OT script adjustments, fan-films, and alterations to non-Star Wars material too.

I would really like to see this done. This is a site full of OT fans. I think there will be some really good stories from people. We all have a good idea of what we wanted to see. Now we can say and do what we want.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Script Writing And Re-Writing gets my vote.

The Ric Olie Memorial Forum. does not.
