Uhh... Ghosts and Goblins? Who has ever beaten that?! I can barely even get to the second level!

But Mike Tyson's Punchout is a good one too.

i actually have beaten ghosts and goblins. i also have this really bad habit of when i'm about to die (fall into a bottomless pit or jump into a bad guy.. whatever) i pause it, thinking it will save my guy from certain doom. but, alas, all it does it prolong the inevitable.

oooh.. contra's a good one. i can't beat that one without using the konami code.

Contra is pretty much impossible to beat without using the code, since it was designed as an arcade game and you're supposed to die a million times, so I don't count it. SuperC, by comparrisson, was made solely for the NES and is much easier.

Time Lord! Not a very popular game, but man it's hard.

Two other games on my NES-never-beat list until recently were Mike Tyson's Punch Out and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1).

Mike Tyson is hard, but if you can get past the first 1:30, he doesn't throw the knockout punches anymore (though he's still pretty hard). I beat him multiple times including a decision at the end of the third round (hardest way to beat him I think).

I admit I had to consult some cheat sites in order to beat TMNT, but only to find which ways to go in a couple of the levels (the one with the turtle van and the airport one). The technodrome is pretty much impossible even with all four turtles with full health. I got to Shredder at the end with one turtle left and barely any power but got lucky I guess.

Actually...I've never even beaten Mario. Always seem to run out of time or the machine screws up near the end.
Which is the more foolish, the fool (the OT) or the fool who follows (the PT)?

with the game genie!!!

seriously, though. it took me a long time to get master status on that game. wait. are we talking about ghosts and goblins or ghouls and ghosts? i remember with ghouls and ghosts once you beat the game the first time, you have to go through the whole frakkin game a second time to get to the real boss at the end. what a ripoff!!

I was talking about Ghosts and Goblins. Sorry, I had a brain freeze and have since edited my message.

Game genie...of course. But I wonder if anyone has beaten it without it?

Wait, Ghosts and Goblins is the one you have to beat twice....

i have beaten it without it. the game genie thing was a joke.

i actually had to consult my handy dandy nintendo power to beat that game. took me a couple months of afterschool play, but i finally did it. what exactly do you want to know? a certain boss?

and you have to beat ghosts and goblins twice, as well. these games are both ripoffs. heh

Ghosts N' Goblins kicked my ass when I was a kid. The difficulty on that first round of Capcom games (Ghosts N' Goblins, Trojan, Section-Z, Commando, etc.) was insane. I never finished any of them.

I never finished Ninja Gaiden either. Couldn't handle the last boss. Same thing with Zelda II. Evil Link frustrated me to no end.

Punch-Out was a tough game for me until I finally beat Tyson. After that, I could walk through the whole game without going down. I fired it up recently after not having played in probably 15 years, and I made it all the way to Mr. Sandman before I hit the mat. Like riding a bicycle.

Despite all the frustration, I prefer my NES to any console before or since. The difficulty was high enough to make you feel a true sense of accomplishment after finishing a game. Today's games are more like movies that you play through. Most feel like a walk in the park compared to the NES days.

a friend of mine whizzed through ninja gaiden. i was amazed. after watching him play, i decided to do it and i pretty much whizzed through and beat the boss.

evil link. wow. i forgot about that. come to think of it, i've never beaten zelda II either. i guess it doesn't bother me as much as punch out does.

the thing about the consoles after NES is that the final boss is way too simple to beat after going through the whole game. it was pretty much a let down. Zelda III is a prime example of this.

i used to have an Atari 5200. spent many evenings playing qix, popeye, and missle command.

EDIT: and of course, pacman. whenever i'm waiting for a movie to start at the local theatre, and i see one of these 4 games, i end up plunking a quarter in and play for 20 minutes straight. heh. i give my game to some kid that's watching my game and head to the movie. usually end up missing the previews each time.

yeah, the NES days were the best. A friend of mine played alot of those games and beat them when we were younger, but i could never beat mario 1 for the life of me. Never got very far in the second one cause it takes sooo much time. beat the third and all later ones though.

Jay's is so right about how most games nowadays seem like a walk in the park compared to those NES games. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that we've all grown up and stuff. But man those old NES games were tough.

I can beat Mario 3 quite easily, but I didn't beat the original Super Mario until about a year ago. I have Punch-Out without the Mike Tyson endorsement, but Mr. Dream fights pretty much the same as Tyson. It took me years, but I finally beat him a year ago. I'm not sure what advice I have except just stay on your toes and never blink.

I've never beaten the second quest on The Legend of Zelda, and I've never beaten Zelda II.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

has anyone beaten duck hunt? I guess a better question would be can you really beat duck hunt?

Mike Tyson's Punch Out, I did get to him, but I didn't know what I had to do to beat him... Heheheh I still remember that to beat the fat guy, you should hit him in the chin, and when he dropped his shorts, him it in the stomach, or something like that...

Dick Tracy, that was one f***ed up game, I didn't finish that one...

Yo-Noid, now, I THINK I did get to the final pizza contest, but I don't belive I won, at least I don't remember it... That was 1989, 1990, I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday, let alone this...

Ghostbusters! Damn I never got to climb the whole building!

Ghostbusters 2, that was hard too... I was never a good videogame player...

Mario Bros 2! Not the japanese lost levels, the america one... I think I went as far as 6-3 or something... Using warps of course.

Roling Thunder, I couldnt finish that one either...

Games I did finish:

Megaman 2, Megaman 3, Ducktales, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Baby Boomer (the light gun one), uh... I can't remember, I KNOW I did finish some other games, but I don't remember so well... I've played NES from 89 to 92 or 93, probably 92, when I got my SNES, and played very littlle after that, so I can't remember things so well...
